lCOfOM Seventh Annual Meeting Leiden,~ober 1984

In the last issue of Museologieal News (HN), 1 had the pleasure to inform you that the Museologisehe Academie Reinwardt (HAR) has invited our Committee to hold its annual meeting 1984 in the Netherlands, in Leiden.

Only some small changes in the preliminary programme for the meeting published in Museologieal News 5 have been made sinee then. Let us refresh our minds, confirming the information given and resuming the objectives for the meeting:

1 The annual meeting of ICOrOH

- We meet in Leiden, October 1-6, 1984

- A joint meeting together with the ICOH International Committee for the Training of Personnel - ICTOP will take place on October 2, 1984. This event, taking up the very urgent topieal question of the role of museums in the cultural policy of a country, and honoured by the presence of representatives from Dutch culture and museums, promises to be a fruitful and agreeable continuation of the collaboration between the two Committees.

- ICOrOH Executive Board meeting will be held on October 1 and 6 - and whenever necessary during the meeting.

- ICOrOM Working Gr~ups will arrange their meetings on October 1 and 6, and during the meeting period according ta their needs and wishes.

- on September 30 to Enkhuizen with departure at 9.00 from the hotel.

4 In general:

Both the meetings are open for the members of the two Committees, as weIl as members of ICOM and museum workers.

In order to permit the organizers to run the meeting smoothly, preliminary registration has been asked for from the Reinwardt Academie. If you have not sent in your name yet, please do so immediately, preferably by phone to Peter van Mensch or Piet JM Pouw (Netherlands, 071-120570 or 133183). A registration form from MN 5is enclosed for

) this purpose in this issue of MN, too.

The Museologische Academie Reinwardt, together with other Dutch organisations, have taken aIl the measures necessary for the successful progress of the meetings in Leiden. A

) great deal has also been done for the well-being of the participants. Taking care of arranging the accommodations was one of such measures, assuming that the registration form has been sent in and accommodation asked for. Transportation to and from the hoteI, Academie and museums will be arranged. Lunches have been booked, for which a contribution will be asked.

As for us, we have, on the economic level, to answer for our own costs for the travel to and from the Netherlands, accommodation and food. On the spiritual level, it is the participants who are expected to do aIl for the success of Leiden 1984!

Welcome to Leiden with good spirits and with a lot of stimulating proposaI,: and ideas in favour of museology!

-v~-

The agenda for the meetings follows below. More detailed instructions will be sent in the next few days by the MAR directly ta the participants registered.

The names of the contributors are given in the list below.

Presentation of concepts originating from different parts of the world has been reached only to a limited extenl: 11 Europeans, 4 Americans and 2 Asians will participate in the discussion. lt ~s to be regretted that no contributions have been received from Africa and Australia and that the number of contributions from Asia and America is not greater.

Nevertheless, we have no reason to complain - the basic papers do constitute a very good basis for the discussion in Leiden. In order to reach a lively exchonge of ideas, aIl the papers received have been published in the sixth issue of ICOfOM Study Series - 155, and mailed to aIl participants registered. Copies of this issue will be available in Leiden, too.

To stimulate the discussion, the writers have been asked to put on paper their views on the co-contributors' basic papers. four comments have already arrived, the rest are expected in the next few days. AlI of them will be published again in a volume of 155 and - if everything goes weIl - distributed at the beginning of the symposium in Leiden.

A new form of organizing the discussion will be tested at the meeting. Instead of presenting the résumés and comments, the writers will be grilled by a panel of 4-5 interrogators, whose task it is ta dig up the essential answers on the questions posed. The auditorium will be encouraged ta enter into the hearing whenever someone feels that he/she has something to add or ta calI in question.

As stated above, the presuppositions for the symposium are so far very good. The result of the symposium, however, depends on how the discussion will develop. Each participant should feel responsible for this - therefore,the best just now is to start reading the papers in [SS 6, which you hopefully have received already. If you have not received it because you are not registered, do as follows: Send your registration form to Leiden and the request for ISS No. 6 to the ICDrDM Editorial Board in Stockholm. Vour ISS issue will arrive by return of post.

ICOFOM perspectives

IcorOM plenary meeting in London approved, with some smaII modifications, the document ICOrOM Policy 1983 as a base and framework for the continued work of the Committee.

Decision has been made that drafts of basic documents on

* ICOrOH aims and policy

* ICOrOH long-term program

compiled by the Program working group (P-WG) in collaboration with the Committee's Chairman, will be presented for discussion and approval at ICOrOM's annual meeting in 1984, and, after two years' probation, ratified in the final agreed wording by ICOrOM triennial meeting in 1986.

At the meeting in 1983, it has been agreed, too, that

* the InternaI Rules of ICOrOH

have to be updated according to the approved document ICOrOM Policy 1983, and revised following the Model internaI rules for ICOM International Committees, which were adopted by the General Assembly of ICOM in London.

Efforts have been made to work out the drafts of these documents. On the following pages you will find the result of this work:

Document 1: ICOrOM aims & policy

compiled by V Toft Jensen, the Co-ordinator of P-WG, and II Stransky, the Co-ordinator of T-WG,with an introduction by the Chairman of the Committee.

Document 2: ICOrOH long-term program

worked out by JK Spiel~auer, the Secretary of ICOrOM, with sorne notes added by the Chairman.

Document 3: InternaI Rules of ICOrOH

and

Document 4: Rules of procedure for ICOrOH meetings

based on the proposaIs elaborated by Charles Evan Blommestein, member of the Committee, except for the point 5 of the Document 4 which has been compiled by JK Spielbauer, and on the whole reviewed by the Chairman.

AlI these documents are of great importance for the future work of the Committee. Therefore, the maximum participation possible of ICOrOM members in the discussions is desirable, for which aIl the time necessary must be given. A work done in haste would bring more damage than good.

Bearing this in mind 1 would propose that aIl the members of the Committee, even those who cannot come to Leiden 1984, will be provided with the opportunity of giving their views on the drafts presented there. This can be arranged

• by publishing the results of the discussions in Leïden

15

Page 17: Museological News 6network.icom.museum/fileadmin/user_upload/minisites... · 2012-06-15 · the membek4. The contact ~n the Opp04~te d~kection 4hould be ~nckea4ed and act~vated. Act~vated

- the second drafts - in the next issue of Museologieal News (No. 7),

• by asking everybody to write his/her views on the 2nd drafts, if any, to the Board by a set deadline,

• by publishing the reviewed proposaIs - the third drafts in the following issue of the bulletin (MN 8) and then presenting them for a definite approval at the annual meeting 1985.

In this way, the greatest possible democratie participation of the membership of ICDrDM will be guaranteed. The prior decision of two yp.ars' probation with final ratification of the documents in 1986 is another security valve of importance for the best result in building up a sol id foundation for) ICDrDM.

Read now, please, carefully the following pages and let us hear from you soon.

Document 1 Aims &policy

Some introductcir'y notes by the Chairman

1 According to the decision made by the ICOrOM Third General Assembly in London, measures have been taken in 1983 in order to work out a document on the Committee's aims and policy.

2 The document on the aims and policy of ICOrOM is one of the most important acts concerning ICOrOM, its present and future life, role and tasks.

3 Touching the fundamental conditions for the Committee's existence and work

• as a body of ICOM, and)

• as an international organ for museology

it has to capture aIl that these two facts involve and carefully consider the necessary balance between them.

) 4 The basis for such considerations has been the critical analysis of the ICOrOM activities with conclusions and proposaIs for future work, worked out by the Chairman of ICOrOM and, after consultations with the Co-ordinator of P-WG and his consent, published under the headline ICOrOM Policy 1983 in Museological News No. 4, 1983 (pp 30-47).

5 Taking in account that also other documents regulating ICOrOM and its work such as ICOM Statutes, ICOrOM InternaI Rules etc. have to be respected while compiling a document on the Committee's aims and policy, and that parallel, ongoing work on the four basic documents on ICOrOM - aims & policy, longterm program, internaI rules and rules of procedure for ICOrOM meetings - must be co-ordinated, the Chairman and the Coordinator of P-WG agree> to organize the work on the draft in planned phases.

) The first phase should bring together a draft concerning the contents of the document and its structure.

The following phase should consider the views on the first draft given by the members of the Committee, as weIl as aspects concerning the relation of the document to the other documents regulating ICOrOM and its functioning.

6 The result of the first phase of work is presented as follows. It consists of

• a concise introductory outline by V Toft Jensen, and

• a detailed draft, compiled by ZZ StranskY·

7 The temporary working group entrusted with the task of working out the final draft of the document - the Chairman of ICOrOM, the Co-ordinator of P-WG (including the members of P-WG), and the Co-ordinator of T-WG - expects views and useful proposaIs to be given by the members of ICOrOM.

On the basis of the comments received and other ICOM documents to be taken in account, as mentioned above, a second draft of the document will be worked out and presented for discussion in the Committee.

Oetailed draft , of the structure and contents of a docuaent on ICOrOH aims & policy compiled by Zbynêk Z Strénsky

A Mission

The objective of ICOrOM is to become an international working and discussion forum for

* developing museology as an independent scientific discipline

* working out museological theory and methods for museum work

* confrontation and integration of national and other group efforts towards progress in museology

* co-ordination in applying museological knowledge to) the work of the international committees and steering

bodies of ICOM

* deepening of the theoretical level of museological and museographical training

) * dissemination of the results of theoretical studies by means of special publications founded by ICOrOM for this purpose

* propagating museology and its significance between museum workers as weIl as the general public, with a maximum use of means of mass communication and particularly of specifie forms for museum communication

and in this way by these efforts participate considerably in ejecting museology into everyday museum work, as a means of its rationalization and increased efficiency, in the interest of a wider role of museums in the use and enrichment of national and international cultural values, with the goal of influencing in a positive manner further development of humbn society.

B Methods

IcorOM will fui fil its mission by

* using in its work purposeful and systematic methods when solving principal questions concerning the forming of museology itself, and especially of its own theoretical system;

* striving that .museological knowledge be ascertained broadly in practice and be used in a maximum possible way in the solution of aIl principal questions concerning the formation itself as weIl as further development of museums and museum work in general;

* encouraging its collaborstors to deepen the methodological level of their theoretical work in museology, and for this resson to support interdisciplinary collaboration and to contribute to propagate the use of new methods and techniques in the solution of their own tasks both theoretically and practically;

making possible by discussion and publication not only* the confrontation of theoretical knowledge, but also at the same time the effort to reach, with the help of a wide scientific platform and at a particular phase of museological development, the principal theoretical conclusions in the basic questions of museology and its theory;

striving for involving the widest possible circ les of* museum personnel, and especially young museum workers, in museological work and leading them not only to acquire existing knowledge, but also to become the co-creators of further development of museology.

Structure

In the interest of the successful fuI filment of its mission, IeOrOM will use the following organizational structure:

) * the core of lCOrOM will be the Board of the eommittee;

* working groups will, as advisory and working organs of the Board, be entrusted with solving particular longterm as weIl as short-term tasks;

) scientific activities, first of aIl symposia, will be* the basic form to discuss and solve museological questions; they will mostly be arranged on the occasion of IeOrOM annual meetings and of the IeOM General conference;

* a publication platform will be created by MuWoP Museological Working Papers, and Museological News, and any other printing form approved by the Board.

DCa-operation

The work of IeOrOM must be organically connected with related organizations and institutions. This is a basic condition that the efforts of IeOrOM should successively permeate the widest circles and, at the same time, that IeOrOM could actively react to aIl outside impulses and demands.

IeorOM must therefore collaborate purposefully with

* the steering organs of IeOM and the ehairmen of IeOM national committees in the interest of promoting museological solutions of museum problems;

* the international commit tees of IeOM in the interest of successfully tackling current museum tasks;

* the Editor and Editorial Board of MUSEUM (Unesco) and national editorial boards of museological journals with the aim, through their intermediary, to strengthen the role of museology in solving museum problems;

* training centres of museography and especially of museology at universities in order to co-ordinate theoretical work, ta strengthen the theoretical level of training and to engage young graduates in concrete museological work;

Document 2 Long-term program

lforking dra ft by Judith K Spielbauer

)

)

)

The objectives of the ICOFOM long-term program are to establish guidelines for organizing commit tee activities and to direct the coordinated study and dissemination of museological theory and methodology. To accomplish these objectives, several methods have heen accepted: symposia, lecture programs, workshops, museological publication exhibits, and committee publications. In order to foster the greatest effectiveness of these activities, the committee will attempt, whenever possible, to expand participation through collaboration with similar groups and organizations, to incorpora te experts from outside the committee and the profession, and to extend access to the committee's scientific activities by non-participants through publication of relevant materials.

SYMPOSIA PROGRAMMING

The annual ICOFOM symposium has been e·stablished as a place for direct discussion and debate on current questions of museological theory and methodology. To provide for an effective coordination of the many potential topics and to respond to the varying interests of the committee memhership, the long-term symposia plan concentra tes on the museological understanding of the dynamic relationships between the museum, the object and society. In a cyclical manner, each symposium will concentra te on one dimension of this relationship: the object and society, the object and the museum, and the museum and society. This sequence is repeated every three years with a new set of questions selected by the membership during the preparation of the Triennial Program. Topics, such as those suggested here, will be chosen on the hasis of the interests and concerns prevalent at that time.

The Museum and Society

1. Developing a significant role for museums within the society of the future.

2. Non-traditional museum functions of the museum.

3. Museology: Manipulation or Help.

~. Museums and the non-visitor.

5. Museological perspective versus visitor expectation.

The O~ct and the Mus~

1. Museums and monuments, archives, libraries, etc.

2. Determining significance: collection criteria.

3. Intangible objects: do they exist for museums?

~. The museological perspective of conservation limits: .when, where, how and why.

5. Preservation versus access.

6.

The Ob1ect and Society

1. The educational impact of objects.

2. Proxemics and museum communication.

3. Signs, symbols and concepts: Semiology and museology.

4. Group dynamics in museum communication.

5. Criteria for presentation: information, affect or influence

6.

It is the responsibility of the Program Working Group to establish an organizational outline of the topic chosen for each year and to provide basic àirection to the participants in order to encourag. a cohesive and concentrated discussion. Where appropria te , the practical or applied aspect of the topic will be part of this outline. Each symposium format is determined by the Program Working Group and will be adjusted according to the topic and the lessons learned from past experience.

LECTURE PROGRAMMING

The ICDFDM lecture programs are designed to provide greater flexibility than is allowed for in the symposia plans and will allow committee members to benefit from opportunities created by meeting in a different place each year. Each country brings a special perspective to museology based on past and present museum experiences and interests and the committee recognizes the value of these differences. The lecture programs will be planned so as to utilize the unique resources of the host country and will vary each year in accordance with the possibilities available at that time. These resources may be drawn from museums, museological orientations or experts from inside or outside the profession.

The Program \/orking Group 101111 determine the topic and organize the lecture program in conjunction 1011 th the host insU tution.

\/hen su ch specialized programming is not feasible, the lecture program will present topics of general museological interest, of special importance to some members, or of urgent concern. These topics are not determined by the general theme for the symposium but may correspond with it or be drawn from the symposia when circumstances are favorable. When possible, suggested lecture topics will be coordinated with the special resources of the host country.

Suggeste~cture Topics

1. Museums and the future--the future of museums.

2. Behind the times: introducing new technology into museum work.

3. Museums as an ecological milieu.

4. Ecomuseums and the New Museology.

5. Has futurology anything to offer museology?

PUBLICATIONS

ICOFOM will continue to view publication as an important activity and will persist in its efforts to maintain past commitments and to develop new and efficient means of serving the museum community. Current and proposed methods include the journal Museological Wor~.1.n.lL~~. the bulletin Museological News, and the pre-rrints rCOFüM Stud~ries.

Museological Working Pa pers (MuWoP)

The journal Museological Working Papers will continue to serve as an international forum for debate of current issues in museological theory and methodology. Efforts will be made to secure adequate and dependable funding and to expand the readership sufficiently to become financially independent. This effort will include attempts at cutting current costs. Among the possibilities to be considered are printing separate French and English editions and searching for less expensive

places ta prepare and print the journal.

The primary organizing principle of HYHQl will remain as originally developed, that of a sequence of basic papers, comments, and an assesslnent for each topic presented. The topics chosen are designed to contribute to the logical development of museological theory and methodology. Volumes 1 and 2 began the tapies "Museology - Science or Just Practical Museum Work?"and "Interdisciplinarity in Museology." Volume 3 will discuss the "Object of Museology." Other topics to he included are:

1. The system of museology.

2. Museum collecting activities Museum object - theoretical problems, methods and criteria for museum collecting activities.

The assessment of each theme will be done by experts appointed by the Editor. These individuals will not have been part of the previous discussions. When possible these experts will coordinate their efforts by correspondence or by meetings. The ICOFOM Museology Workshop will be one possibility for facilléating this work.

) In order to broaden the perspective presented in the

journal and to increase the potential impact of the journal on the museum profession, the introduction of additional sections ta the content will be considered. Some of the alternatives ta be discussed in the future include:

1. A terminology section. This section would relate directly to the papers presented in the same volume. It would allow the authors to derine the terms that are important to the understanding of their worlc and provide the reader with relevant comparative material.

2. A section on the history of museology. Experts would be invited to write a series of papers of the general history or museology or a historical study relating to the topic presented in that volume.

~ologi~ News

Museological News is the ICDFDM informational bulletin and serves as a standardized form of correspondence to the memberships and other interested individuals. It is published twice annually under the direction of the Information Working Group and the Committee Chairman. The content of each volume is variable and is determined by committee activities at that time.

ICOFDM Study Series

This series serves two purposes and is intended to increase museological understanding and communication among the Ilembership and interested individuals and to provide a foundation for the committee's scientific activities.

The pa pers printed in these volumes are unedited and untranslated. Some volumes will collect and distribute the ICDFDM symposia papers to participants prior to or at the meetings. Other volumes will be collections of papers submitted on topics of interest to the Committee members. Such volumes may be background studies for symposium or lecture programs planned or may be independent themes. Independent topics planned include:

1. The definition of the museum object.

2. Communication through the object in the museum.

3. Museums and society: the society of museums.

EXHIBITION OF HUSEOLOGICAL PUBLICATIONS

In an effort to facilitate communication within the profession as to currently available publications, the Committee will investigate the possibility of establishing an exhibition of museological publications l'rom around the world in conjunction with the ICOH General Conference and Assembly. Museums, governmental agencies, educational institutions and publishing hou ses will be asked ta send representatives with copies of pertinent publications to the IeOH meetings. The study and possible organization of such an exhibit will be done by a special working subgroup appointed by the Committee chairman and under the guidance of the IeOFOM Managing Group.

So.e additional notes by the Chairman

1 The draft is an excellent expression of the objectives of the Committee's long-term program and the methods for its fuI filment. The last years debates on ICDrOM's work and future are captured in the document and further developed. It also leaves room for additions and changes, and forms a weIl prepared material for the discussion in question.

2 The draft has been sent for views to ICDrOM Program working group. No objections or proposaIs for changes have been given either to the Chairman or the Co-ordinator of P-WG.

3 Continued work on the document requires

o that attention is paid to aIl views and complementary proposaIs from the members of the Committee

o that checking against ICOM basic documents and programs is done

o that aIl earlier documents and decisions concerning IcorOM's) future be taken into consideration when making the final

wording of the document

o that co-ordination between the four documents under compilation be secured in order to avoid reiterations or contradictions, discrepancies or inconsistencies.

4 The text of the draft is presented as written by J K 5pielbauer.

The following preliminary notes concerning the draft are added by the Chairman:

(a) The introductory paragraph might have a headline: Objectives of ICOrOM long-term program and methods for its fuI filment (aIt. Objectives and methods)

(b) The section "5ymposia programming" could in paragraph 1 refer to MuWoP, the efforts of co-ordinating its thematic plan and

) the symposia programs, and finally the method of disseminating the results of the symposia by publishing the papers in 155 and the whole symposia material/documentation in MuWoP

(c) A final section with general regulations for additions, changes and validity of the document should be added

Alternative proposaI

Concerning the voting rules:

The fact should be considered, that only. a part of the regular members of ICDfDM can participate personally in the annual and triennial meetings of ICDfDM. The decisions made by the simple majority of the regular members present at the meeting eliminate for the most part, ca 7D-7S~' of the members, the possibility of influencing the work of the Committee.

An alternative solution, concerning at least the most important questions (votes of the Board and Chairman, dissolution or suspension of the Committee, approval of various documents on the policy and activities such as rules, long-term programs, triennial programs etc.) should be found. It could be arranged by combining the discussions at the meetings with publishing the drafts in Museological News. This procedure should allow to the members who cannot participate at the meeting to write in their views. The final drafts should then be worked out on the basis of aIL views

) received. A simple majority of aIL regular members of the Committee shou1d be necessary for approving the draft.

This form of decision-making will, of necessity, require a much longer time for a decision to be adopted than is usua1, but this procedure will

) assure a broad base of acceptance by the membership and thus lead to more effective action.

ICOFOM meetings in 1985 and 1986

1985

The venue for the Committee's next annual meeting in 1985 has already been set. We are invited by the Yugoslavian National Commit tee of ICOM and the Museum Documentation Centre in Zagreb to hold our eighth meeting in the romantic and picturesque old town of Motovun in Istria in september 1985. some five ta seven days will be spent there discussing our "affairs" and holding the next symposium "Originals and reproductions" on the use of replicas, reproductions and models in museums. The exact date is not stipulated yet; the proposaIs will be discussed in Lei.den.

ln connection with the meeting, preferably before it, the first) ICOfOM Museology Workshop will be arranged together with our

Yugoslavian colleagues in the same place. some 7-10 experts from different parts of the world will be asked ta meet in Motovum in order ta work out the final assessment of the discussions which have been going on and concluded in the ICOfOM

) journal MuWoP - Museological Working Papers. This time, the discussions on the themes No. 1, Museology - science or just practical museum work? and No. 2, Interdisciplinarity in museology, will be closed. The conclusions of the expert group entrusted with the assessment will be presented at the following ICOfOM annual meeting. furthermore, the report will be presented in the next issue of MuWoP.

By inviting the Committee to appoint some members to give lectures to interested Yugoslavian museum workers during two or three da ys after - or before - the meeting, the Yugoslavian organizers open a very valuable channel to ICOfOM for the dissemination of museological thinking into the practical museum work, and for close contacts with museum people in Yugoslavia.

More details about the meeting in 1985 will be given in the next issue of Museological News. Nevertheless, you can already now plan for next year and reserve a week in september for ICOfOM.

1986

The ICOH Executive Council decided at its 57th session in Paris, 4-5 July, to accept the invitation of the Argentinian National Committee of ICOM to host the next General Conference and General Assembly in Buenos Aires from 21 ta 31 October, 1966. The fact that ICOM had not previously held its General Conference in the southern Hemisphere and the conviction that such an event could contribute to museum development and the promotion of ICOM in South America formed the basis for this decision.

By this decision the place and time is given for the ICOfOM Ninth annual meeting and fourth general assembly. The symposium on Museology and cultural identity will be arranged at this occasion.

It i8 too earlyto give any details now about this meeting. The only thing which each one of us has ta do is to start immediately saving pennies for the trip. Museological Working Papers No. 3

Never before did 1 think that one could be happy about a delay in production! But now 1 believe it!

The delay in distributing the French version of Museological News No. 5 provided the possibility of adding to the information on Museological Working Papers the following cheerful note:

"The Chairman of rCOFOM has the pleasure to inform you that a generous subvention has been granted by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal, for the publication of MuWoP No. 3. These funds, completed - as we hope - by a financial contribution from the Ministry of Culture of the Netherlands, make it possible to start immediately the preparations for the publication of No. 3 of MuWoP. ICOFOM expresses its acknowledgement of this generosity and gratitude to the Calouste GuIbenkian Foundation."

It is with some pleasure that 1 now publish this good news in the English version of Museological News No. 6, and repeat it in the French one.

Two years of waiting is over - the work on MuWoP's next issue can go on at full speed again, and there is a lot to be done.

The extent of the manuscripts waiting for editing and publishing is enormous. For some sections of MuWoP so many papers are available that they could fill two or three issues of the journal in advance. For other sections, however, access to some more contributions would be desirable - either because of the wish to present more views on the questions discussed, or because of the imbalance in the presentation of concepts from different regions.

On the main theme of No. 3, the object/subject of museology, eight papers have already been received and sorne four/five papers promised. The chronic imbalance in the presentation of concepts which are typical of different parts of the world could, alas, unfortunately not be avoided. The majority of the writers are Europeans aga in (6), while America and Asia are represented by one writer each. If the promised papers reach us, the number of Europeans will increase by 3, while America and Asia will each have one writer more. Even if our fond hopes of a wider regional representation remain, the result reached up to now is more than satisfactory. Names like A. Oesvallées (France), W. Gluzinski (Poland), A. Gregorové (Czechoslovakia), 1. Maroevié (Yugoslavia), R. Rivard (Canada), R. Singleton (U.K.), K. Schreiner (GOR) and B. Zouhdi (Syria) - aIl of them authors of papers received - guarantee an elucidation indepth of the topic. Completed by views promised by P. Mayrand (Canada), P. van Mensch (Holland), O. Miguel and E. Morral (Spain), 1. ~ola (Yugoslavia) and S. lsuruta (Japan), the procession of ideas will provide a basis large enough for an exercise in thinking around the topic.

)

)

)

The permanent discussion on the topics chosen - the main aim of the journal - will proceed in each issue, but a larger number of voices from museum workers in the field would be desirable.

The discussion on theme No. 1: Museology - science or just practical museum work? seems to have reached an end. No more comments have come in, which is not surprising considering that most of the contributions t û the ICOfOM symposium 1983 on methodology of museology and professional training (27 papers and comments in aIl) touched this particular problem. And these papers will be published in the next issue of MuWoP! The time is now ripe to work out the assessment of the theme 1 - a task which the first ICOfOM Museology Workshop must take up.

The discussion on theme 2 "Interdisciplinarity in museology" is treated in 3 papers received till now - two from Europe and one from Asia, the theme of the Paris symposium "The system of museology" in two European papers.

for the newly announced section on the history of museology, one paper has arrived so far. A balanced picture of museology's childhood will require studies on this theme covering different parts of the world and time, published side by side or incorporated into a common paper. This theme requires discussion and a sub-editorial group who should take over the responsibility for the task, because the dangers of a regional disequilibrium may be greater here th an on any other topic.

Reflections on the proposed terminology section have been carried out, and the work is going on. This time, in No. 3, a model for the section will be presented for discussion. The basic idea is to work out a glossary closely connected with the themes discussed ir MuWoP.

The most extensive material to be published in MuWoP are the papers from the ICOfOM symposia: Paris 1982 with 9 papers, London 1983 with 27 papers on the Methodology of museology and professional training and 17 papers on the theme Museum territory - society, and now Leiden 1984. We can only publish them successively, but we should do it as quickly as possible. The financing problem haunts us again.

Finally, to report everything, sorne letters ta the Editor have been received and sorne reviews on new museological publications are available, too.

50 let's finish by stating that now with the funding problems for No. 3 apparently solved, the editing and printing work on this issue can go on. The deadline given for receiving contributions was June 20, 1984, but we still hope that anyone who has the inclination to write will send in a paper on its theme "The object/subject of museology" or on any point of the running discussions. Let us repeat that we particularly wish to widen the regional perspective - and that your letters, comments and papers will be included if they reach the Editorial desk by October 31, 1984 at the latest.

Yours

Editor of MuWoP 43

What is ISS and what role does it play in the work of ICOfOH?

155 is a very unpretentious and simple print among the other ICOFOH publications. Its aim is to make quickly available theoretical or methodological reflexions on museology, first

·of aIl in connection with the preparation and course of the Committee's scientific activities as symposia, lecture programmes etc. ln this way, stimulating discussions in re are made possible and interesting topical ideas are spread without unnecessary delay.

To reach this aim, unassuming methods must be used in producing the series. Pape ra received to the symposia etc. are published in the state the y arrive to the Editor - without any editorial encroachment and without being retyped or set.Only sorne very plain typographical measures are being practised (headlines etc.) in arder to present the material clearly. The manuscripts are simply copied in a limited edition and distributed first of aIl to the participants of the scientific activity in question. The rest of the edition is available on request to the lCOfOM Editorial Board Office in Stockholm.

The manuscripts are protected by 1COfOH's copyright. Depending on the current financial possibilities the texts may be published in an editorially and linguisticly revised form in ICOFOM's theoretical journal Museologieal Working Papers.
