FineArtLocated on the campus of Murray State University, the Clara M. Eagle Art Gallery is a multi-level exhibition space allowing visitors as well as locals to experience art first-hand. The gallery features diverse shows; from art classics to contemporary, from student work to national juried shows. Also on campus, the Curris Center Gallery is home to a wide variety of exhibits throughout the year. Admission to the galleries are free to the public. After spending eleven years in New York City, Jennifer Fairbanks recently returned to Murray to open her own art gallery, Gallery 109 & Fairbanks Studio. Go see one of the many exhibits featured throughout the year, including work from local, national and international artists. Class-es, such as drawing and oil-painting for beginners, are conducted weekly. The Murray Art Guild, a local non-profit educational and cultural organization, offers classes and workshops to help develop the talents of local artists. Classes range from photography to drawing to rug weaving and are taught for multiple skill-levels.

ForrestC.PogueLibraryThe Special Collections Library, located in the Forrest C. Pogue Library, includes materials relating to the history and culture of western Kentucky and Tennessee, especially TVA and Civil War materials. Visitors can also enjoy tracing their genealogy in the vast records. On the National Register of Historic Places, the building was constructed in Renaissance Revival style, featuring bronze doors on the east and west entrances, and is often the building used to represent Murray State University.

TheatreandMusicMurray State University’s Music Department and Department of Theatre and Dance provide concerts, plays and dance productions throughout the school year. Also, the Murray Civic Music Association presents world-class performances at historic Lovett Auditorium. Lovett Live consists of two concert series held at Murray State’s Lovett Auditorium that bring fans closer to the music. With Onstage Series shows, sit on stage with the artist, close enough to ask questions and hear the stories behind the songs from the artists themselves. The intimate coffee-house style seating for 200 includes tables, leather sofas and giant chairs. Concert Series shows get you closer to the mu-sic by bringing new and favorite artists to Murray, so fans don’t have to travel to major cities to see great bands. Lovett Live features local artists, Nashville singer/songwriters and artists you may be surprised are stopping in Murray.

Wanting a show-stopper of a concert? The CFSB Center provides large-scale concerts of all genres of music. Music ranging from Miranda Lambert to Maroon 5 have provided exciting entertainment.

Downtown Murray used to be a place to trade livestock or goods, buy groceries, see the doctor, board a bus, sell tobacco crops, get a prescription filled or see a movie. Although times have changed since then, downtown is still as vibrant as ever. The Court Square is home to a unique variety of retail shops, restaurants and events.

Rudy’s on the square, open for breakfast and lunch, features good, home-style Southern cooking. They offer made-from-scratch breakfast each morning and plate lunches every day. Find authentic, made-to-order Chinese food at Happiness Restaurant, also located on the square. Lunch specials feature an entree with rice and two sides, all for a reasonable price. Chicago-style cuisine is featured at Mugsy’s Hideout, with specialties such as deep-dish pizza, Italian sausage sandwiches and toasted cheese ravioli.

How does downtown Murray maintain its charm? Murray Main Street, an organization working to preserve and strengthen the area, continually works to revitalize downtown through renovation projects. The organization also organizes a variety of community events and activities on the Court Square that allow community members and visitors to experience downtown at its finest.

The Downtown Saturday Market fills the Court Square with fruits, veggies, pies, treats, flowers, arts, crafts and other products every Saturday (7 am - noon) during the months of May through October.

I scream, you scream – well, you know the saying! Ice cream is one of America’s favorite treats, and what could be better than free ice cream? At the Ice Cream Festival, sample one of the many crazy flavors of Purity Ice Cream for free. The square will be packed with ice cream, food vendors, inflatables, rides and other family-friendly activities.

Main Street Merriment brings warmth and holiday cheer and spreads it throughout the downtown area. This event takes place the first Friday in December and is a great way to kick-off the Christmas season. First, visit Santa on the Courthouse lawn while watching the lighting of the community tree. Then, browse one of the many downtown businesses that stay open late that evening. The Robert O. Miller Conference Center hosts music, food, hot chocolate and beautiful Christmas decor. Dickens’ Alley transforms a normal alley into a beautifully-lit 17th Century London passageway. Enjoy pony rides, storytelling and a “pub” that serves warm soup and other food. Keep an eye out for carolers dressed in period costume.

Head to the basement and check out 5th and Main Coffees, where you can relax, try one of their “20 Below Hot Chocolates,” or purchase one of the many flavors of tea.

Purchase University of Kentucky apparel or explore an entire room dedicated to Hello Kitty merchandise at The Bookmark. Next door, drop by Penique’s, which has two floors of home decor. Antiques Hazel, Kentucky

If you are antique shopping in western Kentucky, you must be in Hazel. Established in 1890, Hazel became a booming railroad town through the early 20th century. Hazel is now known as an antique-lovers heaven, and is only a seven-and-one-half mile drive from Murray. Park your car once and spend the entire day browsing the various shops. Be sure to stop for lunch at the Magnolia Tea Room, serving fresh soups, sandwiches on homemade bread, delicious cake and 27 varieties of hot tea. Also, set your sights on the Tea Room’s Murder-Mystery dinners - an evening of “Who done it?” with gourmet meals.

State Line Ranch and Home, on the outskirts of Hazel, offers not only antiques, but also western-style gear. Angelique’s Antiques sells pieces from the mid to late 1800s, vintage pieces as well as new items. The largest store in the area is Charlie’s Antique Mall. Here, shoppers can browse the furniture, china, coins and more, then stop for an ice cream treat at the soda fountain.

For years, the farm housed an old barn painted with the American Flag. The family wanted to continue the patriotic tradition with a red, white and blue design revealing the first quilt to the Calloway County Quilt Trail.

Focusing on the design aspect, the Cahoons chose three different patterns of a smaller size to compliment the style of their barn. The patterns are the Ohio and Army Star.

Forming in early 2010, a group consisting of Calloway County Homemakers, quilters and community members set sail on creating a Quilt Trail for visitors to enjoy. In 2010, the Murray Calloway Transit Authority introduced the newest addition to its line-up: the trolley! The trolley is a great way to cruise the town while seeing all of the most important places in Murray. The route runs from Murray State University’s campus, through Chestnut Park and straight into downtown Murray. If you want the scenic tour of Murray, the trolley is a perfect fit. Or, take the trolley downtown to eat and shop in the heart of the community. It only costs 25 cents to use and is free for Murray State students. The Arboretum at Murray State University is a fully accessible horticultural display, public garden and educational labora-tory located on the Pullen Farm of Murray State University. The Arboretum consists of five major parts: Open Woodlands, Savanna, Open Prairie, Oak/Hickory Forest and Wetlands, plus Display and Community Gardens. Walk the two miles of pathways and experience one of the largest and most diverse col-lection of plants in western Kentucky. Throughout the area of the arboretum you will find collections of both introduced and local woody plants, annuals, and perennials, of historic significance to the western Kentucky region. Recreat ion Murray and its surrounding region is ideal for hunting and fishing. Kentucky Lake is known as the “Crappie Capital” of the world. The lake also offers other types of fish such as largemouth and smallmouth bass, spots, bluegill, red ear, white bass, shell cracker, stripers and sauger. Dedicated fisherman come from near and far to sample the wealth of the lake. For those who do not already have a boat, everything from fishing boats to yachts to sailboats are available for rent.

For hunters, there are more than 250 days of hunting season for the area, complemented by vast hunting ground. High on the list for the region’s hunters are white-tailed deer. Kentucky is regularly in the top five states in producing record book deer. Nearby Clarks River National Wildlife Refuge offers open hunting in rich bottomland hardwoods.

With its close proximity to the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, Murray is a paradise for any outdoorsman. LBL presents a big-woods hunting experience on 170,000 acres of ridges and hollows.

Murray’s great outdoor life has even gained national recognition by Outdoor Life magazine. Murray State University was named a top 10 university for students who love to hunt and fish.

Covering 180 acres of land, the Murray-Calloway County Parks system holds a swimming complex, batting cages, nine baseball and softball fields, a soccer complex with 15 fields, three basketball courts, 10 covered pavilions, five playgrounds, a youth climbing wall, an outdoor amphitheater, three-and-a-half miles of developed nature trails, a disc golf course and a dog park. The Central Park Disc Golf Course was complete in 2006 and is becoming one of the parks most used facilities. Disc Golf, a rapidly growing sport, is similar to traditional golf but with Frisbee-like discs. The 18-hole course has a total length of over 5,200 feet with a par of 58, and is great for experienced players or those new to the game.

Have an adventure with your pet by bringing your dog to the new Dog Park, located in Central Park. The park is divided into two sections, one for large dogs and one for small dogs. Canines can go through the built-in obstacle course, walk the beam, jump through hoops and play other games just for dogs.

The American Society of Golf Architects designated the Frances E. Miller Memorial Golf Course as one of the best designed 18-hole courses in America. It presents a unique challenge for competitive and recreational golfers alike. Measuring 6,592 yards from the championship tees, the par-71 layout has two distinct nines which require a wide array of shot-making. The outward nine is set on hilly terrain and requires pinpoint accuracy from tee to green, whereas the inward half rewards length and accurate long-iron play. The facility also offers two large practice putting greens, as well as a wide two-level practice tee and a spacious 315 yard driving range. Sullivan’s Par 3 Golf and Sports Center offers an 18-hole executive golf course and a driving range, where during the peak season the range is lighted for night practice. Sullivan’s also houses an 18-hole miniature golf course and batting cages.

The William “Bill” Cherry Agricultural Exposition Center, commonly referred to as the Expo Center, hosts a wide variety of events from livestock and horse shows to circuses, truck pulls, motocross and much more. Over 25,000 people from far and wide attend the various events held annually.

Kentucky LakeKentucky and Barkley Lakes, joined by a free-flowing canal, form one of the largest man-made bodies of water in North America. Combined, the two lakes have over 4,000 miles of shoreline and over 3,000 miles of water. Not only will you find fun-filled outdoor activities such as boating, swimming, fishing, hiking and camping, but you will also discover family-fun adventures in water parks, go-karts, train rides and more.

Kentucky Lake is known as the “Crappie Capital” of the world. A little-known fact is crappie can be caught year round. The lake also holds other fish such as blue gill, spots, red ear, shell cracker, stripers, saugers and of course, bass! Opportunities abound for both back country and modern camping, as well as horseback riding, biking, hiking, boating and swimming. Or, go hunting during one of the area’s 250 days of hunting season.

Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area offers 170,000 acres of wildlife, history and outdoor recreation opportunities, wrapped by 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline.

Sit under the stars and learn about our universe at the Golden Pond Planetarium and Observatory. In the summer of 2011, the planetarium will be offering a “Summer Nights” show. Discover life on a 19th Century farm by visiting The Homeplace. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll through the grounds, farm buildings and even interact with the interpreters. Get in touch with nature at the Elk and Bison Prairie, where a native habitat lost more than a century ago is being carefully restored. At the Woodlands Nature Station, guests can enjoy a guided hike or canoe excursion. The Nature Station also offers an indoor discovery center as well as live wildlife in its backyard exhibits. In August 2011, the Nature Station will host a Hummingbird Festival.
