JERSEY GIRLS Susan Murphy’s “GIRL GROUP: A Daughter’s Tale”

A Jersey City Story about The Carmelettes All-Girl Singing Group Opens Feb. 7th at the Loew’s Jersey City

Cont’d from Cover The piece features Murphy along with Tom Cappadona, Elisabeth Ness, Alison Scaramella, and Jenna Sofi a. It’s directed by Mario Giacalone with vocal direction by Diane Garisto of Brooklyn. The show is produced by Ste-ven Minichiello, Murphy’s close friend who also grew up in Jersey City’s Marion section. Murphy originally produced the musical in 2011 at LaMaMa in Man-hattan. “I always felt like the show had more life in it,” Murphy says. “Sometimes you do those shows, and

it’s like great, did it, done. This show is different. The audience loved it. We loved working on it. It has some-thing.” Murphy describes the piece as, a performance memoir about doo-wop and dreams deferred. It’s a play with music about mothers and daughters, uncelebrated lives and the extraordinary talents that lie hidden with-in them. The main charac-ter played by Murphy is a singer who goes back 50 years to her mother’s life as a member of a successful girl group. Murphy calls the piece an “Alice-through-the-

looking-glass” adventure where the singer reclaims her mother’s legacy and, in doing so, creates her own. “When I was 15, I started writing my own material,” Murphy says, “and somehow I knew I was going to come to this story at some point in my life.”THREE GIRLS WITH A VOICEThe songs are recreations of what The Carmelettes re-corded. Some of the music was by Beatrice Verde, the older sister of one of the girls and the driving forcebehind the group, Murphy

says. “She didn’t sing but she wrote, ar-ranged and played,” Murphy says. Beatrice Verde had tremendous ambition and went on to write for Motown. Murphy describes her as the Sven-gali of the group. “I think of that time, 1957-196, girls just didn’t do that” Murphy says. “It’s before the Ronettes, the Su-premes. It pre-dates the girl groups. We had a rehearsal the other day that was so good, it made me realize

how good these girls re-ally were. They started the group when they were 14. Here we are professionals struggling as we pick apart the harmonies. These girls were only 14 and they were singing it.” To get the girl group sound just right, Murphy asked her good friendDiane Garisto to be vocal

CREATING DANCE,INSPIRING DANCERS

Samuel Pott, Artistic Director of Nimbus Dance Works gives Dancers a Place to Soar

By Sally Deering

The Jersey City dance company Nimbus Dance Works’ repertory of dances blends contemporary with classical and newbies with professionals; and Artistic Director Samuel Pott likes it that way. Nimbus Dance Works celebrates its 10th season in Jersey City this year with new works by guest chore-ographers, a performance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and a brand new dance studio on Third Street. The school has ex-panded tremendously since the move from the Barrow Mansion and class registra-tion is in full bloom for the spring session which begins Feb. 2nd. Pott founded the com-pany with the mission to “focus work on the inter-section between high-level dance and innovative ways of involving communities and audiences” and he has stayed true to that mis-sion. Nimbus has a lush repertory of dances and its resident company performs regularly in New Jersey, New York and regionally. Nimbus dancers are top-tier

drawn from companies like Ballet Hispanico, Ailey II, and the Martha Graham Dance Company, where Nimbus company mem-ber and Pott’s wife PeiJu Chien-Pott is a principal dancer. Nimbus’ annual performance of JERSEY CITY NUTRACKER casts student dancers from local schools in pivotal roles, and in addition to Pott’s choreographies, Nimbus commissions international choreographers like Pedro

Ruiz (Cuba/USA), Huang Yi (Taiwan), Korhan Basa-ran (Turkey), and Xiao-Xiong Zhang (Australia/Taiwan) to create dances for the company. Nimbus Dance Works offers Hudson resident, both kids and adults, a high level of artistic excellence and guided by Pott’s vision, the company continues to provide inner-city kids opportunities to learn and perform dance to spark their individual creativity

and inspire a life-long ap-preciation and involvement in the arts. RVO: Samuel Pott, how would you describe Nim-bus Dance Works’ style?SP: We’re a contemporary dance company. The danc-ers are all highly trained in ballet and modern dance which are the backbone of technique for the work we do. It’s also very theatrical depending on the piece. We try to do work with great music, from jazz to

classical to contemporary. Our company is made up of seven dancers and three apprentices.RVO: How’s the school doing at the new location? SP: The move from Barrow Mansion to our new studio on Third Street was a big move for us, and enabled us to build up the school quite a lot. We now have classes for kids, adults and a pre-professional program. We focus on ballet and modern dance. That gives students a strong base and real preparation if they want to pursue dance profession-ally or in college dance programs. They’ll have the foundation that will really benefit them. In addition, we have dance programs after-school and during school in 11 schools. Edu-cationally we’ve been able to keep expanding and giv-ing children the opportuni-ties to see performances and take classes. We have a lot of kids that perform in (the annual holiday show) JERSEY CITY NUT-CRACKER. RVO: Why do you think it’s important to teach dance to inner-city kids?

Samuel Pott, Artistic Director of Nimbus Dance Works cont’d from page 3SP: When I was dancing with ballet and modern dance companies it was an amazing experience in an artistic sense, but one thing I saw over and over was

that audiences were largely made up of senior citizens. Audiences were diminish-ing and it was becoming increasingly hard for these companies to draw young

audiences. So what I wanted to do with Nmbus was find a way to connect with people who didn’t feel like the world of concert dance was open to them or rep-resenting them. And that’s young inner-city kids. Those underserved audiences have the most potential to have their lives changed through dance. Those who have discretionary income to see ballet, they’re going to have plenty of options available to them no matter what. Whereas the audi-ences we try to reach and the community we try to reach, they don’t have a lot of other options available to them. I thought that was a compelling reason to focus our attention on how to bring dance into their lives. Teaching children dance to not just to teach them about the art form, but what it means to take something se-riously, invest in themselves.

RVO: Are you trying to get a permanent perfor-mance space?SP: Jersey City is grow-ing so fast, its cultural organizations are being left behind. We still lack perfor-mance spaces and funding for the cultural organiza-tions that are here in Jersey City. It’s lacking compared to other areas in the coun-try. We have luxury high-rises, but you’d have a hard time pointing to one cultural group in Jersey City that’s established financially. I don’t think there’s one organization in Jersey City that has a budget over $300,000. It would be great to see Jersey City promote its own arts groups, support them financially and help spread the word. RVO: What are the company’s plans for its 10th season?

JERSEY GIRLS Cont’d from page 2 director. Garisto sings professionally and has been a back-up singer for super-stars like Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Laura Nyro, Steely Dan and Neil Sedaka. Hav-ing worked as a backup singer, Garisto knows how important it is to get the singers playing The Carmelettes to harmonize perfectly. “Street corner doo-wop is what all these songs are about,” Garisto says. “I’m sort of keeper of the har-mony. It’s my job. There’s something about being a singer in a group. There’s a skill to singing that, these songs, these girls really blended in harmony. That’s why Susan called me. It’s different from being a lead singer.”

THE PLAY’S THE THING Because the Loew’s is so big, Murphy has decided to present the show with the audience seated onstage instead of in the audito-rium. This helps create an intimacy between the audi-ence and the actors. She also has a band performing the music. “It’s the only way for this show to be in this type of space,” Murphy says. “The show is an intimate, gritty, viscerally close show. It’s about regular people and relationships. I’m thrilled to be at the Loew’s. It’s a beautiful venue with all the memo-ries that are there. That’s part of the show. That’s one of the themes of the show.”

The (original) Carmelettes

The staging is bare-bones, Murphy says. Concert-staging with production elements to a minimum so that the story can be told in a clear and simple way. “I’m into giving people an experience, carrying them on a journey,” Mur-phy says. “Maybe it’s my background in experimental

theater. If I can’t give them an experience, it doesn’t matter what venue it’s in. Part of me would like to do this show in pop-up form, like at a bowling alley or a church hall or somebody’s living room. “THE BEAT GOES ON The Broadway musical about Carole King, “Beau-tiful” is set in the same time period as The Carmelettes. Murphy took her mother to see the show last year for her birthday and after-wards, they were invited backstage to meet the cast – thanks to Murphy’s produc-er Steven Minichiello. “They welcomed my mother like she was roy-alty,” Murphy says. Like Murphy, producer Steven Minichiello of Over the Top Productions grew up in Jersey City’s Marion section and at-tended the same parish elementary school. He and Murphy once belonged to a local theater troupe, and have since remained close friends. “I’m so enamored by Susan’s mom’s story,” Minichiello says, “and I love what Susan is

doing. She’s not only paying tribute to her moth-er’s accomplishments, it’s a story about the love of a daughter for her mother. I’m so honored to be part of it, and add any little touch I can. It’s a wonderful story and it should be told.” Murphy’s hoping the performance at the Loew’s will be even more magi-cal than the show they did at LaMama a few years back. Closing night of the LaMama run all three Carmelettes were in the audience, Murphy says, and at the after-party they sang together for the fi rst time in 50 years. “Something special hap-pened that night,” Murphy says. “It wrapped some-thing up that had not been wrapped up before.”If you go:Sat, Feb. 7 at 7 pmGIRL GROUP: A Daughter’s TaleLoew’s Jersey CityJournal Square JCTix: $20For tix: www.brownpapertickets.com

146 RISING TIDE GRADUATES Cont’d from page 5 These new entrepre-neurs—empowered with education and access to the support and resources they need to start or grow a suc-cessful business—joined an alumni network of 968 graduates across Northern New Jersey. The graduation

ceremony was held at Saint Peter’s University Mac Mahon Student Center and celebrated the achieve-ments of eight concurrent CBA classes—taught in both Spanish and English–from the fall semester. “It is truly inspiring to see the progress Rising

Tide Capital has made in 10 years. Not only are we graduating our 1,000th entrepreneur, but we are also currently operating our programs in two counties and five towns in English and Spanish. We have come a long way from 2006, when we only had one class of 16 students at the Urban League on MLK Drive,” said Jay Savulich managing director of programs. Savulich has taught and developed content for the CBA since its inception. “Now that they are equipped with the skills and resources to start their business jour-neys, our new graduates represent hope for the future of Northern New Jersey’s struggling urban corridors.”The evening began with a networking reception that included the graduating class of entrepreneurs and their guests, CBA alumni, local small business development organizations and fundersover live music and light

refreshments. During the ceremony, graduates re-ceived a Community Busi-ness Academy completion certificate and free mem-bership into the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey. Featured speakers included Virginia Bender of Saint Peter’s University, Rising Tide Capital’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees Doug Forrester, cofounders Alex Forrester and Alfa Demmel-lash as well as representa-tives from the eight sessions of the CBA. Hudson County resident, John Henry Soto expressed his appreciation of the pro-gram. “While I was already in business when I started the CBA, the class really helped me tie up some loose ends and put all the pieces together. Weekly, my class-mates inspired me with their knowledge and energy, while our instruc tor held us ac-countable and made it so much fun. It’s so important

for us to not only grow our businesses but to get in-volved and help expand this program that helped us,” Soto said. The CBA, offered in locations throughout Hudson and Essex Counties, teaches entrepreneurs business fun-damentals including budget-ing, marketing, bookkeeping and financing. Each CBA student receives a full-tuition waiver—covered by Ris-ing Tide Capital’s funding partners—and continued business support through RTC’s Business Acceleration Services Program.“Your journey with Rising Tide Capital doesn’t end here, this is just the begin-ning. We exist to support you to accomplish all of your goals for your business-es, your families and your communities. We believe in you! You are the engines of our economy,” said Alfa Demmellash co-founder and CEO of Rising Tide Capital. Rising Tide Capital (RTC) is a Jersey City-based non-profit organization founded in 2004 by Harvard graduates Alex Forrester and Alfa Dem-mellash. RTC helps entrepre-neurs start and grow success-ful businesses by providing a 12-week Community Busi-ness Academy—supplement-ed by year-round workshops, coaching and networking events. These programs are currently offered in Spanish and in English in four cities across Northern New Jersey: Jersey City, Newark, Union City, and Orange Township. As of June 2014, 968 entre-preneurs have graduated from the CBA and together, they operate 459 businesses in New Jersey. RTC’s model of entrepreneurship development has received national recogni-tion from President Obama to CNN Heroes. To find out more visit www.RisingTideCapital.org

CITY OF JERSEY CITY ANNOUNCES PLAN FOR 95-STORY BUILDING TALLEST IN NEW JERSEY

Most Signifi cant Condo Project in State’s History Speaks to Strength of Jersey City Housing Market and Fulop Administration’s Success at Creating Record Construction

Jersey City Skyline as seen from New York River View Observer JERSEY CITY – Already home to seven of the state’s ten tallest buildings, the City of Jersey City today an-nounced an ambitious plan for a 95-story residential tower that at 950 feet would be “by far the tallest building in New Jersey, dramatically remaking the Jersey City skyline,” ac-cording to Mayor Steven M. Fulop. With 760 condominium units, the development, by China Overseas America, Inc. at 99 Hudson Street, is also the most signifi -cant condo project ever in the State, illustrating the strength of the Jersey City housing market and

demand for home owner-ship. The project will also include approximately 18,000 square feet of com-mercial and retail space, and provides for additional public spaces and plazas, including 7,365 square feet of passive park space. Jersey City is currently experiencing the greatest

construction boom in the City’s history due to the Fulop administration’s suc-cess at improving public safety, lowering taxes and creating a thriving com-munity where people want to live, work and invest. In 2014, Jersey City led New Jersey in residential

A scene from WE AQUIESCE by Nimbus Dance Works

SP: We’re trying to propel the company’s profi le to another level. We’re doing a show at BAM in May. Italian choreographer Luca Veggetti is creating a new piece for us. We’ll be going up to Vermont in March and western Massachusetts for out-of-town engage-ments. We’ll be performing at Drew University at the

end of April. In the spring, we will present two impor-tant historic modern danc-es, LYNCHTOWN from 1936 by Charles Weidman, one of the early pioneers of modern dance. It’s a politi-cal piece based on when he witnessed a lynching in his home town in Nebraska. We’re also doing a com-pany premiere by

Pearl Primus. She did a piece in 1942 called STRANGE FRUIT, a solo dance about a woman expressing her grief and anger about a racial kill-ing. These two pieces are important historically and get people talking about issues. I think it’s important to keep the audience enter-tained and feel they’re glad they came out and bought a ticket. Ever since the start of the company, I have

focused on how we move beyond pure entertainment and make an impact on the audience and community.

TALLEST BUILDING IN NEW JERSEY Cont’d from page 9construction starts with more than 6,000 units un-der construction and anoth-er 18,000 approved. Jersey City is projected to become New Jersey’s largest city by 2016. “This is another mile-stone moment for Jersey City,” said Mayor Fulop. “Our plan here is to con-tinue building a world class skyline and to continue leading the region in job creation with projects like this, and we couldn’t be more excited to attract hun-dreds of millions of dollars of investment into the city. This project is going to further put Jersey City on the map.” Currently, the tallest building in New Jersey is in Jersey City – the Goldman Sachs tower at 781 feet at 30 Hudson Street. Trump Plaza, at 532 feet, is the State’s tallest residential building and is also in Jer-sey City. One of the three towers being developed as part of the Journal Squared Project by KRE is expected to be the second tallest resi-dential building in the State behind 99 Hudson at 729 feet when completed. “We are committed to developing this iconic project on Jersey City’s wa-terfront,” said Cindy Xiu, President of China Over-seas America, Inc. “This is indicative of the continuing growth of Jersey City and the administration’s vision to make this best mid-sized city in America.” The last large-scale con-dominium project in Jersey City was Crystal Point, which opened in 2009 with

269 units. While rental projects have continued to flourish in recent years, this is the first large-scale condo project in six years. “The real estate market in Jersey City continues to grow at an unprecedented rate,” said Linda Cantatore, President of the Liberty Board of Realtors. “Jersey City is the place more and more people are choosing to live, and as this project demonstrates, there is a demand for both rental and condominium properties. This development will be a catalyst for even more condo projects as we see an increased demand for homeownership.” The Planning Board will vote on the redevelopment plan change Tuesday

night before heading to the City Council for approval. The Planning Board would then vote on final site plan approval, with China Overseas America, Inc. anticipating construction to commence late spring.

Hootch, Vittles & a Bull Called Frankie The Stewed Cow on Adams Street Great Food, Draught Beers andBourbons that will ‘Blow off Your Cowboy Boots’

By Sally Deering Hoboken’s Adams Street runs west of Washington Street and is typically quiet and residential with a restaurant or pub here and there. On the corner of 4th & Adams, the neighbor-hood sports a beautiful little gem of a place, a country-western themed restaurant & bar called The Stewed Cow. Beautifully decorated with natural wood floors, tables and a long, sexy barwith spinning bar stools,

The Stewed Cow is a ter-rific place to go for some great food and a menu of beers, bourbons and whis-keys that are all made in the good ol’ U.S.A. “It adds to the lore of the place,” managing partner Anthony Ruiz says. No foreign beers can be found on tap at The Stewed Cow which features mostly craft beers from local brew-ers. Bourbons & whiskies are given the same respect and there are 107 of them to choose from. Along with a great menu, one of the big attractions is towards the back of the restaurant, “Frankie Stewnatra” the mechanical bull that gets a lot of attention especially on weekend nights when clientele, after they’ve had a few, will try ride the bucking Frankie longer than a minute. The record,

for now, is 73 seconds and held by a PBR: Professional Bull Rider. Previously known as the Gaslight, The Stewed Cow opened in March 2013 as an old west saloon. Almost two years later, and the staff still meets at every shift change to go over the day’s specials and discuss what drinks – beers, bourbons, whiskeys and cocktails– will go well with the dishes on the menu. This is also to maintain consistency,

Ruiz says. The bartenders are all instructed to make the cocktails the same way. And instead of 1 or ½ jiggers of booze – these bartenders use 2 ounces for every drink -- and some of the drinks are one-of-a-kind. “We have a Prohibition Pig,” Ruiz says. “It’s made with bacon-infused bour-bon.” The Stewed Cow’s menu features Saloon Bites, Burgers, Sandwiches,

Hearty Selections, Sal-ads and a Brunch menu on weekends. The Saloon Bites (appetizers) include Bourbon Onion Soup; Texas Caviar; Buffalo Cala-mari; Mini Burger Trio; Bourbon Chili & Chips; House Made Beef Jerky; Bourbon Glazed Wings; The Infamous SC Quesa-dilla; Deviled Eggs; Black Bean Hummus; Spicy Pimento & Crab Dip; Veg-gie Burger Slider; Mac & Cont’d on page 16

Stewed Cow Cont’d from page 15 Cheese; Cheesy Tater-Tots; Texas Potato Salad; On-ion Strings; and Campfi re Nachos with pulled bris-ket BBQ & cheese sauce, topped with bacon & scal-lions ($4-$12). Burgers and sandwiches include the All-American Cheeseburger; Green Chili Cheese Steak; and Sacred Cow Original Burgers all prepared with the restau-rant’s special, hand-select-ed beef blend. ($11-$16). Heartier selections include Cajun Fettuccine & Grilled Chicken; Tequila & Lime Glazed Salmon; Bourbon Braised Short Ribs; Fish Tacos; BBQ Brisket Platter; Stewed Cow Sirloin; Spicy Chick-en Pot Pie; BBQ BabyBack Ribs; BBQ Shrimp

and Kentuckilicious Fried Chicken -- which one cus-tomer described as incred-ibly tasty with moist plump chicken pieces in a fresh, crunchy breading served with mashed potatoes. ($14-$25). The Infamous Brunch served Sat & Sun from 11 am-3 pm includes choice of Western Omelet, All-American Burger, Cajun-Style Salmon, Steak & Eggs Skillet, Spicy Enchilada, the Cowboy Sandwich made with Texas toast, sausage, fried eggs, jack cheese and jalapeno ranch sauce; Stewed Cow Quiche; Bourbon & Banana French Toast with pecans and bacon; and the RoadKill Platter with brisket, bacon, scrambled eggs and

a biscuit served with spicy sausage gravy. You get two cocktails and a basket of muffi ns, too. ($20). On tap, draught beers include Kane “Single Fin”, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, Magic Hat #9, News-haminy Country Line IPA, NJ Beer Co Hudson Pale Ale, Rogue “Dead Guy Ale”, UFO Hefeweizen, and rotational draughts

include Aces High, Bar dog’s DBL IPA, Mixed with Mash and Most Wanted. The list of Bourbons is big and features Baker’s 7yr Bourbon, E.H. Taylor Single Barrel, High West Campfi re, Hudson Baby Bourbon, Knob Creek Single Barrel, ands Widow Jane Bourbon. Whiskeys include Gentlemen Jack, George Dickel No. 12, Basil Hayden Bourbon, Bernheim Wheat Whiskey, Bib & Tucker Bourbon, Blanton’s Bourbon, Clyde May’s Special Reserve, Filibuster, and Journeyman Silver Cross. “The fi rst year we opened, we were rated 8th Best Bourbon Cocktails in New York” Ruiz says. There are 10 fl atscreen

TVs throughout that show sports all day Sunday and the place will be jammed when the Superbowl is aired on Feb. 1st. Ruiz says: “We smoke our own meats – brisket, ribs – and for the Superbowl, we’ll be serving porkbutt sliders and lots of beer specials.”If you go:The Stewed Cow saloon400 Adams StHoboken(201) 706-8589www.thestewedcow.com
