FIRST EVER TRI-SCHOOL CAREER FAIR

Murdoch MacKay will be participating in

the first ever Tri-School Career Fair on the

evening of April 12, 2017. The event will

be held at Transcona Collegiate, between

6 and 8 PM.

Over 35 participants, including industries,

post-secondary institutions and services,

will be in attendance. It is a great local

opportunity to discuss your future career

possibilities. All students and their

families are welcome.

This past month Fashion students from grades 10-12 volunteered their time at the

annual Nygard fashion show held at the Kenaston store. These students worked diligently backstage with professional

models preparing their outfits and helping to dress them before walking the runway.

Design & Technology program will be hosting their

annual fashion show May 17th and 18th to be held in the Clanscave Gym. The theme this year is "Infinitely Inspired" which

combines structural components of architecture with the organic nature of

flowers and gardens. The evening show/awards night on Thursday, May 18th will be hosted by QX104's Boss Lady Leanne Cater and will feature a reception following the

show. Tickets are available for purchase ($3 for matinee shows, $10 in advance/$12 at the door for the evening show) contact Ms. Miller

Location: York Ballroom 1 – Winnipeg Convention Centre **Grad Dinner/Dance Tickets will be on sale May 2nd - 5th (catch up day on May 9th all at lunch hour @ $70.00/ticket (unlimited). Cash or cheque only (post-dated cheques will not be accepted). After May 9th tickets will be $75.00 (cash only) to be sold on specific catch up days only (TBA) at lunch hour. Ticket refunds available until June 23rd at noon.

Guests Hall C opens at 1:00 p.m. (free admission) all are welcome.

*Note: Convocation will run between 2 - 3 hours

We strongly encourage Grads to make arrangements to stay in the downtown area between Convocation and the dinner/dance to ensure a prompt start to the Dinner and evening activities.

*Barney Charach Photography will photograph each graduate receiving his or her diploma. Photograph order forms will be available on site or you can fill out a pre-order form and hand it in at the Barney Charach table at the entrance to Hall C. Pictures will be mailed out after graduation.

T he River East Transcona School Division offers an International Education Program for students from many diverse countries who

wish to complete a portion of their studies in Canada. Your own family will have the opportunity to introduce an international student from another country to Canadian life and develop a lifelong, international friendship. We are seeking Homestay families for the 2017 - 2018 School Year who are willing to share their home with an international student during his or her studies with us. (Homestay families should live within RETSD school division boundaries or Riverdale area.)

Open your doors to an international student to share your own culture - As well, you and your family can learn about another culture! We are currently in need of families for junior and senior high school-aged students for September 2017 and onwards.

Murdoch Celebrates Pi Day! (3/14) March 14th, also know as Pi day, was an exciting day here at Murdoch MacKay! Pi is a very important value in Mathematics as it is the ratio of any given circle’s circumference and diameter. Many people remember π as an irrational number, which means the decimal is non-terminating. Therefore the digits never actually come to an end. 3.141592653………. so on, and so on.

Our grade 9 Math students participated in an activity to celebrate this mathematical holiday. Each student in every grade 9 math class was responsible for constructing their own bar graph to represent a section of exactly twenty digits of π.

We ordered each of their designs to form a continuous pattern of π digits. We had 165 students take part in total and at 20 digits a piece, we were able to graph exactly 3300 digits of π! Their impressive ‘city scape’ style designs formed from the continuous π digits span the entire Math hallway at Murdoch!

Lastly, Pi day wouldn't be the same if we didn't take some time to enjoy some eatable Pi(e) and ice cream as well. It was a great day!

A merican Sign Language Club will be offered to students twice a week during the second half of lunch hour twice a week during

the months of April and May. Students will learn the alphabet, numbers and some basic signs and communication sentences.

MURDOCH MACKAY HOCKEY—Year End Review

The Clansmen hockey team had a very successful 2016-2017 hockey season. All year they were atop the standings in

the Price division and came up one point short of first place to rivals Leo Remillard in the regular season.

The team had nine returning players and seven rookies on this year’s team. With a good mix of veterans and rookies,

the team had a combination of skill, speed, and size. The team’s success was a result of solid team play, good goaltending,

stingy defence, and forwards that all contributed to our scoring.

Some highlights of the season include our record of 19 wins and only 5 losses. Mitch Lyons was the teams leading

scorer during the regular season with 33 points. Goalie Dylan Arnold led the league in shutouts (2), wins (12), and was

second in the league with a G.A.A of 1.93. The team saw seven players selected to participate in the WHSHL All Star game.

Forwards Mitch Lyons, Zach Tessier, Sam Yackoboski, defenceman Kelton Schultz, Jody Lovenjak, Matt Howlett and goalie

Dylan Arnold all represented the team.

The Clansmen continued their season success into the playoffs sweeping St. Norbert in the first round, two games to

none. The team faced Leo Remillard in round two and completed a two-nothing sweep of the Voyageurs. In the Price

division championship, Murdoch played Linden Christian and went on to sweep the series 2-0 to win the WHSHL

Championship. Zach Tessier was named series MVP. The team only allowed 3 goals the entire playoff run.

Boys from the hockey team did a great job in

helping with our school Hamper deliveries this

Christmas. With the donations from staff and

students, they delivered to three families and

our hockey team also organized a hamper to

deliver to a fourth family (pictured on left).

Thanks to those who donated items for the

hampers. All the families were extremely

thankful for the contributions that made their

Christmas more enjoyable.

Clansmen Basketball Report

The Murdoch MacKay Varsity Boys Basketball team had a great season in the Tier 2 division of KPAC – the boys

eventually won the KPAC Tier 2 Championship with a hard fought 73-68 come from behind victory over arch rivals,

Transcona Collegiate. Congratulations to all members of the team on a job well done!

Our JV Girls team had an excellent season as they finished fourth in the Tier 2 KPAC league – the girls lost a tough

semi-final game at home to Kildonan East. This group was made up equally of Grade 9 and Grade 10 girls and they

joined together very well and great teammates and great friendships were made.

Our Grade 9 Boys had a long and difficult season in the KPAC Grade 9 League. The boys were committed to coming to

practice and worked hard, but their skill set is still developing; the losses were difficult and the wins were few. More

importantly though, the boys learned about commitment, respect, and how to be a good teammate. These qualities

will benefit them, and their basketball skills, in the future.

Our JV Boys Basketball team lost a tough game to Miles Mac in the KPAC quarter-finals. The boys played in the KPAC

Tier 1 Division for the second straight year and they competed and matched up well at that level.

Our Varsity girls team had a good season as well. They stayed committed and worked hard for the entire season and

they grew as a team and had some great team wins along the way!

A big thank you to all of the coaches of these teams who put in countless hours. Without their time and effort we

would not be able to run these programs for our student athletes.

Murdoch Athletic Updates

Badminton tryouts have begun here at Murdoch – they began on March 20 and will continue

until the KPAC Championships which take place the week of April 24-27.

Girls Soccer and Boys Soccer tryouts will begin in April – sign up sheets have been up for awhile

and tryouts and practices for both teams will begin in April in preparation for the KPAC Soccer

Championship tournament which traditionally begins in May. Lets hope that we have an early

Spring so we can get outside!

Optimist Festival:

Murdoch’s Concert and Jazz Band were both very

successful in the last week of February, and learned

lots from listening and working with professional

musicians at the International Optimist Festival. We

received very positive feedback from the

adjudicators, and gave a good show! Murdoch’s

Concert Band played a piece entitled “Snakes!” which

had some very unique instrumental techniques and

tried to capture the essence of everything slithery

and serpentine. Our Jazz Band played a lovely ballad

from the 1960s movie “The Americanization of

Emily”; the adjudicator couldn’t get enough.

We look forward now to our Spring Concert, and hope to share our successes and learning with you on May 25!

Brandon Jazz Festival:

After a longer-than-anticipated drive due to inclement

weather, our Jazz Band arrived in Brandon on March

17, and had a fantastic opportunity to listen to Jazz

Bands and Vocal Jazz groups from all over the province;

even some bands from Saskatchewan and Alberta. The

Friday night concert was outstanding, featuring the

Brandon University Big Band, The Dirty Catfish Brass

Band, and Torontonian musical monsters, The Shuffle

Demons. Students left the concert inspired and tired,

ready for a good night’s sleep. Early breakfast the next

day got us ready and energized for a performance at

8:30 AM, which went very well indeed. Positive and

honest praise from the adjudicators was the result, as

well as some great advice about how to take our

performances to the next level. Brandon Jazz Festival –

what a success! Thanks to the band for making it so

enjoyable, and thanks also to our chaperones Ms.

Street and Ms. Belton for sharing the fun!
