SUMMARyonJanuary29,2009,URSCorporation(URS)visitedtheHousatonicWasteWatertreatmentPlantinMilford,Cttoconductmeasurementsof Hydrogen Sulfide gas levels within the treatment facility. The scope of this testing was to measure the Hydrogen Sulfide levels at various locations during process operations using two different treatment products. The Hydrogen Sulfide measurements were made in two separate two-hour periods.

The first round of measurements was conducted with the use of the ‘Potassium Permanganate’ treatment product. The second phase of testing was conducted with the use of the ‘BioSafe Systems’ GCPRO Oxidizer. The objective of this testing program was to evaluate the two treatment chemicals with regard to the production of Hydrogen Sulfide.

SAMPLINGStRAtEGyThe testing strategy developed for this survey called for the measurement of Hydrogen Sulfide levels using a direct-reading instrument. Measurementsweremadeatsevenlocations;fiveinsidethetreatmentbuildingtoevaluateindoorconditions;oneinthegaragelocatedadjacent to the treatment area and one outside the exit door of the treatment building to evaluate exterior conditions. Testing was conducted in a manner to compare the levels of Hydrogen Sulfide generated during the use of the Potassium Permanganate treatment product during the first two hours of the morning shift and the use of the new ‘BioSafe Systems’ GC PRO Oxidizer during the next two hours of the work shift.

RESULtSThe data generated during this testing indicated that airborne concentrations of Hydrogen Sulfide measured during the use of both treatmentproductswerebelowthepermissibleexposurelimit(PEL)oftenpartspermillion(ppm)establishedbytheU.S.occupationalSafety and Health Administration (OSHA).
