Munich (München) is the capital and largest city of the German state of Bavaria, on the banks of River Isar north of the Bavarian Alps. Munich is the third largest city in Germany, after Berlin and Hamburg, and the 12th biggest city of the European Union, with a population of above 1.5 million.Marienplatz, the true heart of Munich is dominated by the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus).

Black and gold—the colours of the Holy Roman Empire—have been the city's official colours since the time of Ludwig the Bavarian, when it was animperial residence
With their dramatic, all-action poses, the putti from the Mariensäule (Marian Column) rank among the Early Baroque period's most important works of art
Marienplatz square is dominated by the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus). The monumental town hall was built between 1867 and 1909 by Georg Joseph Hauberrisser in Flemish Gothic style. The almost 100-meter-long main facade on Marienplatz is richly ornamented in neo-gothic style and shows almost the entire line of the house of Wittelsbach in Bavaria.
The New Town Hall was built between 1867 and 1908 by Georg von Hauberrisser in a Gothic Revival architecture style. It covers an area of 9159 m² having 400 rooms. The first floor hosts a big balcony towards the Marienplatz which is used for large festivals such as football championships or for concerts during the Weihnachtsmarkt.
The main facade is placed toward the plaza, while the back side is adjacent to a small park (Marienhof).
The often overlooked Ratskeller in the basement serves traditional food and drink to all, not just to the political elite of the city council. Consisting of both large, open rooms and tiny, intimate nooks, like every good German restaurant have a giant beer barrel in the middle
From the Ratskeller visitors can reach the Prunkhof (the main courtyard, off Marienplatz) and look across to the spiral-staircase tower (Wendeltreppenturm ), which is adorned with figures representing the four stages of life, from infancy to old age
Between the tower and the entrance to the Ratskeller is the Kassenhalle, which features cultural exhibitions throughout the year. It's also possible to ascend the hall's 85-meter-high tower for a rewarding view of the city and the Alps to the south
