Welcome to Mundingburra
It is with great pleasure that I welcome all students and their families into the Mundingburra State School
community! I am very proud to be the Principal of this great school which has provided quality education to
students for 133 years.
At our school we are committed to providing quality teaching and learning through a relevant curriculum in
a safe, supportive learning environment. We recognise and value individuals. In partnership with parents
and other members of the community, our school equips students with the knowledge, skills and attributes
to be successful.
We encourage all of our school community to embrace our values and be curious, compassionate and
resilient. We work together with parents to develop students who have a responsible attitude and
ownership of their own learning and behaviour.
Our school motto is ‘Act well your part’.
Our school values are:
• Curiosity demonstrated by learning through enquiry, taking risks and being innovative
• Compassion demonstrated by being caring, considerate, respectful and understanding
• Resilience demonstrated through being persistent, truthful and determined
This booklet provides information about our school’s curriculum, learning, community involvement,
facilities and procedures. Should you require more information do not hesitate to contact the school
administration office.
Due to our limited facilities, we are an Enrolment Managed School to ensure our enrolments do not exceed
our maximum capacity. Information about the Enrolment Management Plan is provided in this booklet and
on our website.
As Principal, I am deeply committed to the development and achievement of high standards in academic
and social learning. Your help in keeping us to this commitment will be a vital part of our association over
the years. Please take up our genuine invitation to be actively involved in classrooms and all other aspects
of our school.
I wish your family a happy and rewarding association with our school and look forward to establishing a
positive partnership to ensure the best possible outcomes for your student/s.
Yours in Education
Sue Royle

School History
Mundingburra State School was established on its present site on 22 September 1884. Situated on Ross
River Road, a major arterial road bounded by Anderson Park Botanical Gardens, the school historically
attracted students from nearby and numerous outlying suburbs of the twin cities of Townsville and
Thuringowa. With the drift of the population to outlying suburbs and the establishment of new schools,
student numbers gradually declined from more than 1000 in the early seventies to the low 500’s in the late
1980’s. Since then, the increasing popularity of the surrounding suburbs as residential areas has resulted in
upward trends in student population before stabilising at approximately 700 students.
In the past decade, the increased mobility of families has resulted in greater diversity of students. Students
reflect a full range of abilities, interests, attitudes and behaviours. The student population comprises a
variety of cultural groups including those with a Language background other than English (6%). Indigenous
students represent 11% of the school’s enrolment. 6% of our students are members of defence force
families.

Enrolment Management Plan
A school's local catchment area is the geographical area from which the school is to have its core intake of
students. A catchment map defines the catchment area for Mundingburra State School. This school
operates under an equidistant catchment area. The school's catchment map is available to be viewed
online at http://www.qgso.gld.qov.au/maps/edmap/. (Enter your address on map.) Additional information
about the Enrolment Management Plan can be found on the school’s website.

your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns.
Oral Reporting is offered in Terms 1 and 3, which can be booked through our online booking system, SOBS.
Written reports are sent home with students at the end of Terms 2 and 4.
Assembly
Weekly school assemblies are conducted in the Hall. Whole school assemblies are held on the first and last

Newsletters
The school newsletter is processed every Wednesday to inform you of school activities. It is sent home via
email for most families but additional copies are available for those families who do not have this service. If
you do not receive one regularly check with your child. The newsletter contains items relating to
curriculum, school activities, P&C activities, student successes and upcoming events. Electronic newsletters
also have any forms etc. that may been sent out during the previous week attached for those who may not
have received their paper copy. The school newsletter is also available on our website
www.mundingbss.eq.edu.au. Articles for the newsletter need to be received at the school office by 9.00am
on Monday mornings.
Parental Concerns
Should you have concerns with any aspect of your child’s education the following procedures are
suggested:
• Make an appointment to see your child’s teacher
• Approach your child’s teacher in a friendly, open manner
• Discuss the concern and decide on appropriate actions
If the concern is still an issue, raise the matter with administration.
Parental Involvement
Parents, teachers and children working together is strongly supported throughout the school. Parent
helpers in classrooms, ‘Meet the Teacher’ evenings, information and awareness sessions and parent
involvement in school decision making processes help create a positive, caring school environment.
Arrangements are generally made with the class teachers so that visits can occur on a regular basis. Your
help in this regard will be most appreciated.
Parents and Citizens Association (P&C)
The association is composed of parents, like yourself, who demonstrate their interest in the welfare of the
school and the children by doing their best to ensure that they will be provided with the educational
materials, library books, sporting equipment, computers and general school items they require. Active
members of the P&C also contribute to many areas of decision making in the school through various
committees. Meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of every month in the Performing Arts Centre at
7.00pm. All parents and carers are most welcome to attend.
9
Attendance – Every Day Counts
Our school day commences at 8:55am, and concludes at 3:00pm. Please ensure your child is AT SCHOOL,
ON TIME, EVERY DAY!
School absenteeism can impact significantly on students’ learning and wellbeing. Research shows that in
Queensland, higher student attendance is associated, on average, with higher student achievement.
Additionally, attending school every day helps children to build social and emotional skills such as
communication, teamwork and resilience.
Absences Under the Education Act 2006 (General Provision) a parent must ensure their child attends school on every
school day required by their educational program (for the whole day) unless the parent has a reasonable
excuse. For long term absences greater than 10 days – please contact the office prior to the leave as an
application for exemption from compulsory schooling/participation form needs to be completed.
Please notify the admin office of all absences via Skoolbag App or email [email protected].
This School Mobile App provides schools with an easy way to tell parents and carers everything they need
to know about school news, newsletters, events calendar, cancellations, school notices, school information,
school timetables, parent sick note forms, school documents and much more. No more lost paper in school
bags! Skoolbag is an iPhone and Android based School communication App that delivers School notices and
information direct to parent’s mobile phones.
To install:
• Go to “App Store” – select iPhone app (works on iPad too using this)
• Type in Mundingburra State School
• Install
Alternatively you can write a letter to your child’s classroom teacher or call the admin office on 47596 444.
Regular monitoring of student absences occur and parents will be expected to explain unexplained and/or
sustained absences from school in accordance with Legislation.
When a child is absent and no explanation has been provided to school staff, a text message will be sent to
the primary carer during the morning session when all class rolls are marked. Please ensure your contact
details are accurate.
Parental Absence
Should you be leaving your children in the care of others, it is your responsibility to notify the school office
in advance of the details of the caregiver or emergency contacts during your absence.
Transfers
If your child is transferring from our school, please be sure to advise the Administration staff so that
paperwork and transfer arrangements can be made.

Parking
Parking facilities are provided for parents within the school grounds at the corner of Ross River Road and
Burdekin Street. We ask that you make use of this area and DO NOT Park in the Staff and Administration
car parks. Both of these areas are out of bounds to children at all times. The Bowls Club carpark can only
be used to briefly park to set-down and pick-up children. Please respect the patrons of the Bowls Club. We
request your support in keeping these areas safe for everyone in our school community. Set down area is a
two minute ONLY arrival and departure.
Transport Service
For information on school bus transport, contact Sun bus on 4774 8255.
Bicycles and Scooters
All children who ride a bike or scooter to school MUST wear a helmet. Children should not borrow or lend
their bicycles or scooters. The riding of bicycles and scooters is not permitted in the school grounds, by
children or adults. Riders should dismount their bikes at the outer gates and walk their bikes into the school
grounds slowly and respectful of pedestrians. It is recommended that children secure their bicycles with a
lock and chain during school hours to prevent theft. THE BICYCLE AREA IS OUT OF BOUNDS DURING THE
DAY.
Crossing Supervisors
We have crossing supervisors on all major roads. The crossings are supervised as follows:
Wood Street: 7:50am – 8:50am and 2:55pm – 3:25pm
Ross River Road: 7:55am – 8:55sm and 2:50pm – 3:20pm
Gulliver Street: 7:55am – 8:40am and 3:00pm – 3:30pm
All children, including children on bikes or scooters, are to use these crossings when crossing the road.
Children on bikes and scooters MUST DISMOUNT and WALK THEIR BIKE OR SCOOTER across the crossing.
Leaving School Grounds
Children are not to leave the grounds during the school day unless under supervision by parents or a
teacher. Parents/guardians MUST sign the student out in the admin office and receive an early departure
slip to collect their child from the classroom if they are taking their child/ren home early. Children cannot
be released from class/playground without presenting the early departure slip. Parents are required to
collect their children from the classroom. Full attendance is expected by all students, and children should
only be signed out early for extenuating circumstances.
Visitors
All visitors (parents/guardians, relatives, classroom helpers, volunteers) must report to the Administration
office on arrival and departure from the school, sign the book and collect a badge. Tuckshop Volunteers
must sign in directly at the Tuckshop.
Trespassing and Security
Being on school property out of school hours without permission constitutes trespassing. Police keep
schools under surveillance out of hours and are keen to apprehend trespassers in an attempt to reduce
vandalism and wilful damage to school property. Parents are asked to emphasise the above with children
so that they do not enter school grounds after school or at weekends. A School Watch program has been
implemented and parents and other community members are asked to contact 131 788 to report any
concerns they see at the school out of hours.

Dress Code To maintain a high standard of pride, to assist students to feel part of our school family and for safety,
students will be expected to comply with a dress code.
This includes:

• Long hair should be tied back
• Wide brimmed hat or sun smart bucket hat

from the school Office or the P & C Uniform Shop.
In wearing the school uniform neatly and correctly, students demonstrate pride in being part of
Mundingburra School. Uniforms have been designed considering choice, coolness and sun safety. Items of
clothing need to be clearly labelled with the child’s name and year level.
School Uniform
Children can choose from, and mix and match between the following uniform items:
Royal blue school polo shirt with school logo
Striped shirt
Striped blouse

Striped dress
Royal blue shorts (there are a variety of styles and fabrics available)
Broad brimmed royal blue hat with school logo and house colour on underside
Children must wear closed in shoes – joggers are acceptable
In colder weather, children may wear a royal blue tracksuit, or jumper/jacket
Sun Safety
The school sun safety motto is NO HAT NO PLAY. Student uniforms have been designed with much
consideration being given to sun safety and coolness. Broad brimmed hats are the most suitable headwear
in the severe North Queensland sun and are mandatory. From 2008, Education Queensland’s Sun Safety
strategy makes it compulsory for primary school children in state schools to wear sun shirts or t-shirts
during school water-based activities.
The following are not permitted:
Baggy shorts, boxer shorts, jewellery other than that specified above. If bike shorts or skins are worn, they
must be worn underneath the school dress or skirt, and bike shorts must be royal blue. The only exception
is during sporting events. Bike shorts/skins are not part of the school uniform and are not to be worn on
their own. We are a uniform school. Wearing the school uniform develops a pride in our school and self-
respect in our students.

Part-payments are welcome but must be paid in full by the deadline date. In the event of family hardship
prior arrangements may be made with the Business Services Manager for payment prior to the deadline
date.
Book Lists
Students are expected to come to school with the materials required (as per the school book list). A book
list is released at the end of each year, which includes information regarding our Voluntary Contribution,
and we ask that parents send the required items to school with their child, well named, and in a timely
manner at the beginning of the school year. For families experiencing financial hardship, it is important to
communicate with the school so that arrangements can be made to ensure your child has the required
materials, and the best possible start to the school year.
Lost Property
It is inevitable that belongings are either mislaid or lost. Clearly naming property allows it to be returned to
the owner. Lost property boxes are located at the back of the undercover play area. These are emptied at
the end of each Term and contents donated to charity. Students are strongly encourage NOT to bring items
of personal value with them to school as items may be damaged or lost. Children are not to bring toys,
trading cards etc. to school.
Valuables
Parents, please ensure that your children DO NOT bring their ‘valued’ possessions e.g. toys, sound
equipment, electronic games or jewellery to school. Apart from the distress caused to students by loss of
or damage to valuables, considerable teaching time is lost as staff investigate student concerns.
14
Mobile Devices (including mobile phones)
Mobile phones or devices are not to be used at any time during school hours. The use of mobile phones or
devices is disruptive to the learning environment of all students, including playtimes. If students must
contact parents in relation to a change of collection time, this facility is available from the classroom.
If a parent needs to contact a student in an emergency, please phone the school office on 4759 6444 and a
message will be passed onto your child. If parents wish their child/ren to bring a mobile phone to school,
the use is restricted to before or after school – outside the school grounds. Mobile phones/devices are to
be turned off in the school grounds. Phones ringing or in use during school hours will be confiscated by the
teacher until 3:00pm at which time they can be collected. Students must sign their phones/devices in to
the office each morning and they can be collected and signed out again at the end of each day. A mobile
phone/device is brought to school at the owner’s risk. No liability will be accepted by the school in the
event of loss, theft or damage.
Breakfast, Lunch and Snacks
Children require healthy eating patterns to help them grow and develop to their optimum potential.
Skipping breakfast can cause a range of health problems for children, contribute to poor academic
performance and can even cause behavioural problems in the classroom. Breakfast increases your child’s
concentration levels and improves their ability to learn. Please support your child’s learning and
development by sending them to school with breakfast in their tummy, and allowing them to enjoy a wide
range of nutritious foods.
Children and adolescents are encouraged to:
• Eat plenty of vegetables, legumes and fruits
• Eat plenty of cereals (including breads, rice, pasta, noodles)
• Include lean meat, fish, poultry and/or alternatives
• Include milks, yoghurt, cheese and/or alternatives
Please ensure your child’s lunch is stored appropriately (e.g. with a cold pack) and you include a water
bottle for use throughout the day.
If you are experiencing financial hardship, or facing circumstances that make it difficult for you to provide
breakfast/lunch for your child, please notify your child’s teacher or the Office. With discretion, we will be
able to assist you during this time, through donations that allow us to provide sandwiches and (at times)
fruit, when needed.
Tuckshop
A modern and well equipped air-conditioned Tuckshop operates daily to provide a range of nutritious
foods, as well as snacks and drinks for students and staff. Convenor, Debbie Lind, is an active participant in
Queensland Tuckshop Association seminars, and has maintained a “Healthy Foods” tuckshop. A new price
list will be sent home as updates to the menu are made. EFTPOS is now available.
A separate order is required for each break (if ordering food for each break). Orders are to be written on a
paper bag with NAME, YEAR LEVEL and ORDER. P to Year 3 children put the bag in the tuckshop basket in
their classroom or orders can be taken straight to the tuckshop. Years 4 to 6 children are to deliver their
lunch orders directly to the tuckshop. Tuckshop and school staff ensure all children receive their lunches.
The tuckshop is always LOOKING FOR HELPERS. Any parents who can help (even if only occasionally),
please ring the convenor at the Tuckshop on 4759 6450.

Behaviour - School-wide Positive Behaviour for Learning
Our school is a Positive Behaviour for Learning school (PBL) which is a whole school program designed to
provide a consistent and positive approach towards positive learning and social interactions whilst at
school and emphasises an educative approach to the management of behaviour. Parents, teachers and
support staff are represented on our PBL team. The values of CURIOSITY, COMPASSION and RESILIENCE are
instilled throughout the school with lessons and skill development in these areas, ensuring a consistent
approach to safety and social happiness within our school.
Our school rules are WE LEARN, WE CARE and WE PERSEVERE. More information can be found in our
school’s Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students (revised 2016), which is available on our website or a hard
copy is available upon request from the office. Parents and students are to read and sign their acceptance
of our Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students upon enrolment through our Enrolment Agreement.
First Aid
The first aid room is situated in the Administration Block. Injured/sick children are to report to the
teacher/supervisor. They will be attended to by that person or they will be given a “Pink Note” to take to
school office where the first aid officer on duty will attend to the student’s needs. Minor injuries that occur
during lesson time, before or after school will be attended to by teacher, school office staff or the first aid
officer.
Student Alert Portfolio
The school has a student alert portfolio which identifies children who have a medical condition which could
be life threatening e.g. anaphylaxis. If your child has such a condition (or other similar conditions) please
inform the Office Staff in writing. Please also ensure that we have the necessary medication in case of an
emergency.
Accidents
Children seriously injured will receive treatment from the ambulance. Where possible, parents will be
notified immediately but if parents cannot be contacted, the child will still receive treatment and
emergency contact will be phoned.
Medications in School
Procedures have been developed by the Queensland Government regarding prescriptions and over-the-
counter medication in schools. Our school is committed to working closely with parents and students to
highlight the risk of students misusing these medications. Medicines not prescribed by a medical
practitioner will not be given.
All parents/caregivers must:
Notify our school of a health condition requiring medication at school
Request, if school staff are to administer medication or assist in the management of a health condition via
the appropriate form which is available from the school office or can be accessed on our website -
www.mundingbss.eq.edu.au
Notify our school in writing of any requests and/or guidelines from medical practitioners including potential
side effects or adverse reactions.
Provide the medication, ensuring it is not out-of-date and has the original pharmacy label with the students
name, dosage and time to be taken, to the office staff.
Dosage controlled blister packs must be obtained from a pharmacy if a prescribed dosage requires the
division of a tablet.
16
Notify our school in writing when a change of dosage is required. This instruction must be accompanied by
a current, labelled prescription package.
Medication must be provided to the school in the original, labelled packaging. Collect the medication when
it is no longer required at school.
Children who are able to self-administer asthma puffers may keep them in their bags to use when
appropriate. Forms are available from the Office and the school must be notified in writing that this is the
case.
Children with sores, abrasions or other injuries should have treatment before coming to school. Parents
should ensure that sores and abrasions are properly covered.
Contagious Conditions
The Public Health Act 2005 provides basic safeguards to protect and prompt the health of the Queensland
public. Chapter 5 of the Act – Contagious Conditions – aims to protect children in schools and education
and care services by controlling the spread of certain contagious conditions that can make children very
sick.
Contagious Conditions (currently as prescribed by the Public Health Regulation) are:
Chickenpox (Varicella), Diphtheria, Enterovirus 71, Gastroenteritis, German measles (Rubella), Haemophilus
influenza type b (Hib) disease, Hepatitis A, Measles, Meningococcal disease, Poliomyelitis, Typhoid and
Paratyphoid, Tuberculosis, Whooping Cough (Pertussis).
How are children protected by this legislation?
Children who are infected with a contagious condition can infect others, therefore children who have any
of these conditions need to stay away until they are well and not infections. Parents of carers have
obligations to keep their child away from school if their child has or may have a contagious condition.
Depending the disease, certain requirements may need to be met before a child can return. For details on
these requirements, refer to the Queensland Health Time Out Poster. A copy of the Time Out Poster can be
obtained from the school office, or
https://www.health.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0022/426820/timeout_poster.pdf.
Additional information, including fact sheets, can be sourced at
http://education.qld.gov.au/health/pdfs/infection-control-guidline.pdf.
Head Lice
It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure their child’s head remains free of lice and nits (eggs). Weekly head
inspections at home of all children in the family and prompt treatment is the preventative measure. Advice
on treatment is available from the school. Should head lice be detected in a class, all members of that
particular class will be issued with a notice advising of the fact and preventative measures, which should be
taken.
Dental Service
All primary school children are entitled to free dental treatment. When the school’s clinic is closed you will
be advised where another clinic is operating. The school dentist can be contacted by phoning 0407 169 678
or the Kirwan Dental Clinic on 4789 9900.

Homework Policy Homework provides students with opportunities to consolidate and enhance their classroom learning.
At Mundingburra State School, homework is:
• Purposeful and relevant to student needs
• Appropriate to the phase of learning
• Appropriate to the capability of the student
• Develop the student’s independence through learning
• Varied, challenging and clearly related to class work
• Allowing for student commitment to recreational, family and cultural activities
Homework benefits students by complementing classroom learning and allowing them to reinforce learning
and practice skills and concepts learnt in the classroom.
Teachers will correspond with parents their expectations with regard to homework. There is an expectation
that various forms of homework will be completed across all year levels. Teachers work in cohort teams to
develop consistent homework procedures that support learning. Homework may be differentiated for
individual students. If your child is spending an inordinate amount of time doing homework, you should
contact your child’s teacher.
Some examples of homework may include (but are not limited to):
• Reading
• Sight Word recognition
• Learning spelling words – these may be written out, written in sentences, covered and checked
• Learning number facts
• Practising maths problems to reinforce concepts taught
• Homework is sent home in a variety of ways. Your child’s teacher will communicate this to you at
the beginning of the school year/term
