Message from our Directors GeneralHey our OMUN community!

We are pleased to announce that we are opening for applications for our 2020/2021 Executive Leadership Team (ELT). This year we are bringing back our Secretary General (SG), Deputy Secretary General (DSG) and Officer positions back.

This year is a pivotal year for OMUN, over the next few months the ELT will be involved in building OMUN into a greater community, more innovative and leadership-driven organization than it already is. That is why we are looking for driven, young and inspirational leaders like you!

Are you a leader? An aspiring lawyer? Actor in the making? A future Diplomat, Politician, Government Representative or NGO founder? Are you passionate about International Relations and diplomacy? Curious about how political gridlocks are solved? Are you an aspiring environmental activist? An aspiring human rights activist? Are you a future UN Secretary General?

About OMUN

OMUN is the first Online Model United Nations (OMUN) Organisation in the world. Online Model United Nations is a global education program designed to break down cost barriers to allow students around the world to engage in a dialogue about international affairs. OMUN does this through a simulation of the United Nations, commonly referred to as a MUN. This will usually consist of a topic (such as the Question of the Protection of Vulnerable Citizens in the Syrian-Turkish Border), and delegates will be required to debate the topic and come up with solutions in the traditional MUN format adjusted to an online setting.

The origins of OMUN began in 2010, with the program formally launching in 2011. In the beginning, the program was one debate every month in a general assembly. This eventually grew into the program that we have today. We have a vibrant online opinion section, up to 3 debates a month, workshops, International Affairs Dialogues and innovative debate styles and topics not seen anywhere in the world. Whether you need more practice before a conference or want to engage in something innovative, OMUN has it all.

OMUN also supports, promotes and implements the sustainable development goals (SDGs). We believe the youth are the foot soldiers of the SDGs and through our various partnerships with other NGOs and NPOs we are committed to assisting schools and organisations in implementing their own SDG projects to positively impact their communities by supporting SDGs.

OMUN firmly believes in giving everyone a voice, regardless of where they are from and their beliefs. With that, we respect each other's opinions and learn to debate with one another on an issue or topic constructively. OMUN also believes in open access to all, hence why our platform is free. OMUN has volunteer staff members on 5 continents.

OMUN proudly uses THIMUN rules of procedure that are modified for use online. We believe that THIMUN allows for the greatest flow in debate compared to other rules of procedure and that it is the most adaptable to the online universe. Furthermore, we believe that THIMUN rules of procedure are easier to learn. We expect our ELT to have some knowledge about how THIMUN rules of procedure work over the course of their time in our ELT.

Our ELT members have gone on to universities including Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, Stanford, New York University, The London School of Economics & The University of Edinburgh. All of whom rank within the Times Higher Education Top 50 universities in the world. We have a habit of hiring the best students from all across the world to be members of our ELT.

We also create an environment for our executive members to academically challenge themselves. From writing designing training workshops to train Afghan students, to drafting grant proposals for major donors organisations as well as drafting portions of board reports, creating education guides and making your opinions heard on crucial topics, OMUN makes sure that you are working with the best to expand yourself.

For students in the IB program or who are considering completing an IB, being a leader within OMUN can count towards your CAS hours.

Furthermore, we give opportunities that no other major program can provide. From being part of recognised delegations at conferences to writing code for our website to creating video content that has been used around the world and even presented at the UNODC Headquarters in Vienna, OMUN is a program that allows you always to be challenged and broaden your horizons.

What is the Executive Leadership Team?The Executive Leadership Team (ELT) is the core group of talented student leaders within the OMUN community. Without the student volunteers in the ELT, OMUN would not exist. The general duties of the ELT are to conduct the preparation of debate, conduct outreach to attract new delegates to the OMUN community and develop long-term programs to innovate OMUN as it grows and diversifies.

The ELT is made up of four positions. The Directors General (DG’s) who lead the organisation, the Secretaries General (SG’s) serve as co-leaders of the ELT and oversees the functions of the team and assists where necessary. The SG also liaises with the Deputy Secretary Generals (DSG’s) for debates and other projects. The Deputy Secretary-General's (DSG's) work with a team to develop debate solutions as well as improving the program in their respective project. Finally, the officers are there to assist in the DSG with the development of their project.

Secretaries GeneralThe position of OMUN Secretary General is a unique position in the Model United Nation’s community. This post is a truly global leadership position, overseeing the execution of OMUN's international online debating platform. The position entails oversight of the high school program and requires daily supervision of the leadership team.

A successful SG must be able to delegate specific tasks to the leadership team, meet regularly with different levels of the leadership structure, troubleshoot problems when debates and community development are not being executed in a timely manner, and have sufficient technology know-how to assist the Executive Team and wider OMUN community in all aspects of the program.

Secretary General Duties

The OMUN Secretary-General is expected to:● Have Active presence within OMUN and monitoring each team and their respective

DSGs to ensure debate cycle is running smoothly ● Staying in contact with OMUN Directors General, and DSGs.● Have exemplary online presence and decorum, including Facebook and other social

media profile information● Identify yourself on Facebook and LinkedIn your “About me” profile as the Secretary

General of OMUN..

Job Specific Duties

The Secretary-General will be responsible for:● Promoting and sharing OMUN with all relevant parties● Be the most public spokesperson for our organisation● Being in daily contact with the OMUN Directors, relevant Assistant Directors and DSGs.● Overseeing the debate program, workshops & blogs● Be the Student Officer of last resort to ensure debate planning and execution.● Help hold at least monthly meetings with all leadership groups and to be informed of

projects updates● Taking on special projects in collaboration and consultation with the OMUN Director and

approved DSGs● Create a vision for the future of our program

Requirements

To apply for this role, you must have the following:● A member in good standing of OMUN for a minimum of one year;● Attendance in a number of OMUN debates;

Who they report to

The position of Secretary-General falls under the Oversight and Administration Team. They respond directly to Directors General.

Deputy Secretary GeneralOMUN's Deputy Secretaries General are responsible for overseeing one particular aspect of the community. They are in effect the second in command and are leaders for their project team. Their job is also to provide oversight and assistance to members of their team, to develop strong programs

General DSG Duties

● A Deputy Secretary-General will be responsible for the following;● To act as the primary point of contact for OMUN enquiries and activities● To oversee the planning, setup, execution and evaluation of their respective projects● To provide leadership and mentoring with their officers to create the best outcomes for

their projects● To promote and develop student leadership within the DSG's jurisdiction● To work in close collaboration with the SGs● Assist the Secretary Generals in all aspects of their duties.● Attend OMUN ELT meetings● Have exemplary online presence and decorum, including profile information● Identify yourself on Facebook and your About.me profile as a DSG of OMUN.

DSG of Debates (GA, SC, HRC, and E4J)

The DSG of Debates will be responsible for the following;

● Work with the officers to make a tally sheet, write the resolutions, prepare care packages, and select debate topics

● Holistically look at the debate and see where improvements can be done to their debates

● Attending their respective debates

Requirements

To apply for this role, you must have the following:● Have previous experience of Model UN debates● Have a strong working knowledge of THIMUN rules of procedure ● Be willing to become an OMUN chair if not already so● Have previous leadership experience in the community, preferably within OMUN

Who they report to

The DSGs of debates will report directly to the Secretary-General. They will indirectly report to the Director General.

DSG of International Affairs Dialogue Debates

The International Affairs Dialogue (IAD) is quite different from other debates that are run in both OMUN. The International Affairs Dialogue (IAD) is an initiative to encourage a spirit of global patriotism and intercultural understanding among delegates from across the globe through OMUN's online platform. Unlike traditional OMUN or MUN debates entailing strict parliamentary procedures, the IAD allows greater freedom for delegates to exchange ideas, while also providing the Chair with an opportunity to question delegates on their understanding of the

matter to gain a broad range of perspectives to then develop better strategies to tackle the issue at hand.

The IAD takes place a few days before the independence day of the country whose socioeconomic or political issues are debated on (e.g.: The Question of Sri Lanka: Promoting Ethnic Tolerance and National Stability). On the country's independence day, the debate findings/overall experience are summarised and published in the THIMUN blogs after review. A communiqué is used instead of a resolution, consisting of clauses describing the issues faced by the country in question, its goals/long-term ideals, along with sub-points for each clause stating strategies whereby those issues could be cost-efficiently and practically alleviated on a small or large scale. Amendments to improve these strategies should be encouraged throughout the debate, similar to procedures in a regular debate. The communiqué must be main-submitted by native delegates from the country in question, and the respective DSG or other supervising ELT member must work alongside them to ensure that the quality of work is acceptable and up to the standard. Each speaker will be allotted equal speaking times, but the main-submitting individual(s) from the country in question will be assigned greater presentation/opening speech times to best explain their country's social, economic, cultural and political struggles from a personal viewpoint.

Finally, the delegates will not be assigned countries to represent as they do in regular MUN debates, but they will instead debate as individuals presenting their personal viewpoints to encourage greater discussion as a result of lowered formality. This role is perfect for someone who has a strong sense of global justice or knowledge about the world's affairs.

DSG IAD Specific DutiesThe DSG of IAD will be responsible for the following;

● Find an appropriate national holiday and determine a topic based on said national holiday

● Find community members from the country (if none available, region) to lead the debate● Work with the workshops team to develop a content workshop before the debate● Collaborate with the marketing team to develop press content before and after the

debate● Work with the officers to make tally sheets. ● Holistically look at the debate and see where improvements can be made to their

debates● Assist the officers in the development of briefing papers and care packages● Attending their respective debates

Requirements

To apply for this role, you must have the following:● Have a strong knowledge of global affairs and issues of importance in developing and

less developed nations.● Be willing to become an OMUN chair if not already so.● Have previous leadership experience in the community, preferably within OMUN

● NOTE: As this role has very different and informal rules of procedure, knowledge of THIMUN rules of procedure is not required, and will not sway the decision of the selection panel in any way. MUN or debating experience is prefered but not essential.

Who they report to

The DSG of IAD debates will report directly to the Secretary-General. They will indirectly report to the Directors General.

DSG of Moderating & Workshops

The DSG of Moderating oversees our chair and moderating pool. They are responsible for recruiting, maintaining and training our chairs, tally mods and amendments moderators. This position is ideal for someone who is looking towards a future in human resources or has a keen interest in THIMUN rules of procedure.

In 2018, OMUN started holding workshops on a range of topics, including an introduction to Model UN and various issues of interest in MUN. This role is perfect for someone who loves planning and preparation and has an eye for quality and detail. This position is best suited for an organised individual who can multi-task and has strange fascinations with specific points in history or considers themselves a MUN buff.

DSG Moderating and Workshops Specific Duties

The duties of the DSG of Moderating will be as follows● To act as the main point of contact for any OMUN Moderator enquiries by delegates or

moderators● To assist the SG in planning, setup and execution of moderator assignments and training● To communicate with moderators and fellow DSG's in decisions or deliberations made

by the SG.● Hold monthly meetings with moderators to keep them in the loop on all OMUN activities

and provide refreshers on training● To keep up to date with THIMUN rules of procedure, including any significant changes

that occur in the rules of procedure● To holistically look at how OMUN recruits and trains its moderators and chairs, and make

changes to improve the process● To oversee the moderator FB Page and to ensure that matters that need to be

communicated are made known to the moderator● To promote and recruit moderators from the delegate pool● To train new Moderators & chairs● Determining topics of requested workshops by students and organisations● Working with the Director General of Workshops to develop the workshops program● Collaborate with the marketing and debate teams where necessary● Write documents that meet quality academic standards and store and archive them in

the OMUN database● Allocate Moderators for Debates

Requirements

It is expected that the DSG of Moderating has the following experience● Extensive training in THIMUN rules of procedure● Extensive experience in OMUN debate procedure (through both the rules and the

process of how a debate works)● A proven track record of reliability to do work independently● Ability to work with a variety of different personalities● Have previous leadership experience in the community, preferably within OMUN● Has good academic standing and writing● Has some knowledge of THIMUN rules of procedure ● Understands the fundamentals of MUN and service projects is a plus● A proven track record of reliability to do work independently● Ability to work with a variety of different personalities and nationalities● Have previous leadership experience in the community, preferably within OMUN

The DSG of Moderating & Workshops will report directly to the Secretary-General. They will indirectly report to the Directors General.

DSG for Marketing

This position requires a lively person who has a strong understanding and constant use of social media platforms. Our online platforms are the beating heart of spreading our message across the world. It helps us tell everyone the opinions of young people from different regions about issues that affect them and how they feel about them. In 2020/2021, the blog and other press content are going to grow to be bigger than ever, and the person who takes on this role will have a fundamental role in facilitating our content to become respected in the field. This position is a perfect fit for anyone who wants to improve their writing skills or is considering a career in journalism.

DSG Marketing

The duties of the DSG of Marketing will be as follows

● Make social media posts with pictures to promote our debates and other activities.● Maintenance of social media content on twitter, instagram and facebook.● Work with the Social Media Officer,Editor in Chief, Graphics and Design Officer, Video

Content Officer to create visual content for our website, twitter, instagram and facebook.● Work with fellow DSG's where required on blog content from their programs and teams● Report to the Director General for Marketing and IT

Requirements

It is expected that candidates have the following experience● Has good academic standing ● Has a strong ability to work with a variety of individuals in different contexts

DSG for Information Technology

As OMUN is an online program, it makes sense for us to need people with skills in IT to be able to help run our program. These skills may involve helping improve our website, maintaining our internal information systems and other improvements that may be found where necessary. This role is ideal for someone with interest in IT and who is considering a future in the industry.

DSG ITs Specific Duties

The duties of the DSG of IT will be as follows● Create and maintain internal systems, including the use of Google Drive and Adobe

classroom and Slack● Creating meeting room links for all STAFF meetings and debates● Assist with the maintaining and improving the website● Oversee and maintain the internal email system.● Assist with all IT concerns and issues.● Work with IT Staff of MUN Impact to develop improved debate systems● Create projects to improve OMUN's external IT systems

Requirements

It is expected that candidates have the following experience● Has a strong ability to work with a variety of individuals in different circumstances● A proven track record of reliability to do work independently● Have knowledge of Drupal, Wordpress and PHP● Have knowledge of Google products, notably Drive and Gmail● Have previous leadership experience in the community, preferably within OMUN● NOTE: As this role has little to do with MUN, no prior MUN experience is required.

However, it may be considered beneficial depending on the candidate.

General OfficersThe goal of OMUN's General Officer is to assist SG's and DSGs in planning and executing their projects and to coordinate messaging and the dissemination of information throughout the OMUN network about projects where relevant and necessary. There are some general officers throughout all projects teams in OMUN, each with separate titles to better reflect their tasks within OMUN.

General OMUN Duties

ALL OMUN officers will be expected to:● Assist the DSGs in all aspects of his/her duties.● Attend OMUN debates and functions on a regular basis● Work directly with the Directors General, Secretary Generals and DSG's on

implementing projects● Attend weekly ELT meetings and relevant team meetings● Be a chair or be willing to become one● Have exemplary online presence and decorum, including profile information● Identify yourself on Facebook as an employee of OMUN.

Debate Officers

Debate officers will assist the relevant DSG's in the implementation and preparation of debates. This role encompasses General Assembly debates; Security Council debates, HRC debates and, E4J debates and IAD debates. You will be assigned to one of these teams. You may state a preference for which team you would like to be a member of, but this cannot be guaranteed. It is expected that you assist with one debate every two months on average, with officers working on other projects during their non-debate months. We are looking for multiple debate officers.

Partnerships Officer:● Maintain O-MUN partnerships.● Create new NGO and Educational partnerships.● Work to achieve O-MUN-Partnership projects. ● Be a liaison with O-MUN partnerships.

Public Relations Officer:Works closely with DGs, Social Media Officer and Editor in chief

Editor in Chief

The role of editor-in-chief is an exciting position within OMUN and counts as one of the general officer positions within our program. They will help DSG of Marketing in developing fascinating articles of matters of interest to OMUN and students across the world. They will also be invited to prepare a series of articles on a particular position of interest. This role is perfect for those who love to write and are considering a future in journalism. We may accept multiple editors in chief dependent on need and demand.

Editor in Chief Duties

The Editor(s) in Chief will be responsible● Assist with the promotion, preparation and publication of website posts● Find delegates to write content for the website and social media● Proofread and edit content before publication● Regularly write for the website and social media.

Requirements

It is expected that candidates have the following experience● Has good academic standing ● Has a strong ability to work with a variety of individuals in different circumstances● A proven track record of reliability to do work independently● Have previous leadership experience in the community, preferably within OMUN● Experience with graphic design work and/or social media work is an advantage● NOTE: As this role has little to do with MUN, no prior MUN experience is required.

However, it may be regarded as beneficial depending on the candidate.

Moderator & Workshops Training Officer

The role of moderating officer is a unique one within OMUN and will be pivotal in the development of moderators over the course of their moderating life cycles. This position is perfect for those who love MUN and understand the nuances of how MUN works. We may accept multiple workshop officers dependent on need and demand. Because of how this role works, extensive debate experience is required.

● Run monthly traction meetings with moderators● Assess Chair Performance● Organise and Recruit for Chair Tests● To assist the DSG in training new Moderators & chairs● Assist with the promotion, preparation and running of workshops● Be asked to run workshops with significant notice on a certain topic, with the

IT OfficerWorking with the DSG of IT, this role allows for anyone who has a strong background in IT the opportunity to make their mark on an online based charity. We're looking for people who want to be able to tinker with ideas related to IT and help us move our program forward in the new mobile device era. We may accept multiple IT officers depending on need and demand.

IT Officer Specific Duties

The duties of the IT Officers will be as follows● Create and maintain internal systems, including the use of Google Drive● Assist with the maintaining and improving the website● Oversee and maintain the internal email system● Create projects to improve OMUN's external IT systems

If you are successful in getting through to the interview round, you will be asked to select a time to conduct an interview. All interviews are conducted by at least one member of our selection panel. The selection committee consists of Priscilla Wepia, Naomi Gumede & Marwan Al Lamki. Combined, all three members have an extensive history in our program and years of MUN experience.

All interviews will occur between the 4th and the 24th of May. All candidates will be given a list of times for which an interview may occur, and the selection of times is first come, first serve. All candidates need to be online on Skype 15 minutes prior to interview

A few days after all interviews, you will receive an email notice of the success or otherwise of your application. A zoom call will inform all Secretaries-General candidates. All other candidates will be notified by email.

In some circumstances, an offer may be made for a position that you did not prefer. If this is the case, reasons will be given as to why the selection panel thought that you would be best for that position, and give you time to accept or reject the offer.

All unsuccessful candidates at any stage may request feedback on their application and interview.

The ELT will be announced on the OMUN Website and the OMUN Facebook page on 24th of May at 10:00UTC. All candidates must also keep this date free for the first meeting of the new executive leadership team at a time that will be voted for by the ELT on the first Saturday of June. All successful candidates who have not done an OMUN debate will further be required to participate in a debate in June or July.
