2 PEOPLE MW MONDAY, 3 JUNE, 2013

For the community of about 500 visually challenged families living in Vangani, a town approximately 75km from Mumbai, life is an everyday struggle with few choices. Tired of ask-ing the government for jobs which have been reserved for the disa-

bled category, most of them have resorted to performing and beg-ging on local trains in Mumbai. The commu-nity treats every at-tempt to reach out to them and every offer for help with suspicion, having been exploited by NGOs and govern-ment bodies several

times in the past.

These families chose Vangani to settle down because of the rela-tively cheap accom-modation. Most fami-lies live on rent in small one room hous-es. Rent ranges from Rs. 1500-2000 per month. Many mem-

bers of this community are still waiting for their ration cards of the 'below poverty line' category, that entitle them to government subsidies and cheaper food supplies. Balu Shinde, one of the members of the visual-ly challenged commu-nity, stated that the

problem lies in the per-ception that visually challenged individuals are not employable and less able than sighted individuals, regardless of their qualifications.

OPINION: Indian Premier League- In a „fix‟

E ar lier po lit i-c ian names

used to pop up in the papers for co r-ruption but now sports -persons seem to be giving them a run for the ir money. These days, c r ickete rs are mak ing the ir way up to the head lines, not by crea t ing new rec-ords but because o f the ir indulgence in scams. S eason s ix o f IP L has be-come a contami-na ted season o f fixes. The mantra o f IP L seems to be wine , women and wea lth for a few while the res t s it outs ide the fence and enjoy the d ra-ma. The sho rt fo r-mat, wild swings in for tunes , chee r-leaders, late -night part ies – an envi-ronment that makes for a pe r-fect breed ing ground for corrup-t ion..

The 2013 spo t fix-ing scam s tar ted with the arres t o f three c r ickete rs from Ra jas than Roya ls (one o f the teams in the IP L

tournament) name-ly, Sreesanth, Ajit Chand ila and Ankeet C havan by the De lhi Po-lice . Ac tor Vindoo-Dara S ingh (son o f famous acto r and wrest ler Dara S ingh) was a lso arrested on charges o f bet t ing. The fi-na l b low to this season was the BCCI (Board o f Contro l for Cricke t in Ind ia ) pres i-dents ‟ own son- in-law -- and owner o f the C henna i franchise C henna i Super K ings (one o f the teams in the IPL tournament) – who was a rrested by Mumbai po lice for a lleged in-vo lvement in bet-t ing and fixing. With this, there have been ca lls fo r the remova l o f board pres ident N Sr inivasan– how-ever no evidence has been found which leads to his invo lvement. Also, only three p layers o f the same fran-chisee have been arrested while the number o f book ies arrested has a lmost crossed doub le d ig-its.

What can be done to make IP L a cor-ruption-free league when the BCCI ap-pears to be em-bro iled in it? I f the BCCI genuine ly wanted to take a step aga inst a ll this , mill ions o f opportunit ie s fo r the same have been made ava ilab le, es-

pec ia lly a fter the setup o f ant i-corrup tion unit in 2012. Also, S ha l-abh S r ivastava, Amit Yadav, Ab-hinav Ba li, TP Sudhindra and Monish Mishra were le ft with las t warning when the

BCCI could have actua lly used this opportunity to se t an example tha t it is no t a suppo rte r o f such fraudulent act ivit ie s.

It would no t be wrong to state tha t the Ind ian cr icke t

loving pub lic has been too forgiv ing in the pas t. As a so lut ion – a 24x7 vigi lance o f the board and p laye r act ivity is imposs ib le. The so lut ion is ne ithe r to shun c r icket a l-together. But c r ick-

eters who have p layed foul can be forced to live the rest o f the ir lives as b lack lis ted sports -peop le , in obscur ity.

The IP L has to

c lean up its ac t.

Banning a few

p layers and an-

nounc ing small

measures will no t

do the tr ick. The

IPL canno t sus ta in

itse lf if its cred ib il-

ity is punc tured . I t

needs to over -haul

and be c leansed

"Gold is popular

among sportsmen

also. On a lighter

and ask the West

something which

everyone looks for-

have is a gold chain

with a nice pendant

Sachin at the launch.
