Project Overviewn more than 100 years, St. Norbert College

ever had a dedicated library building.

ibrary space was located within existing

uildings with the latest housed in a

emodeled dormitory. To stay competitive in

he education marketplace, the college

etermined that students deserve a state-of-

he-art library that expands the college’s

radition of excellence. A new library oftencts as a deciding factor for prospective

tudents and faculty.

The new Miriam B. and James J. Mulva

ibrary provides an educational environment

hat is intellectually, spiritually and personally

hallenging. The design exemplifies new

aradigms in libraries as learning spaces. It is

nteractive and collaborative, promoting

roup gathering and knowledge sharing.

ach space within the library encourages

reative thinking.

ProcessOriginal plans for the library included very

raditional furniture. Then, Library Director

elice Maciejewski attended a CIC (Council

or Independent Colleges) workshop and

earned the importance of flexible furniture

or today’s students.

New goals included plenty of flexible

urniture and collaboration spaces for

tudents,” says Maciejewski. “The building

was already complete, so we tweaked the

paces and furniture to create collaborative

pportunities. KI was instrumental in

election and arrangement of the furniture.”

KI responded to the challenge with a focus

n new trends in learning, blending the

ocial and academic aspects and shifting

owards more interactive communication.

erforma Senior Design Architect Michael

lynn says, “The architecture set the tone of

ccessibility. The furniture complements that

ocus and really works in the spaces.Together they create a wonderful dynamic

ntegration.”

erforma President Jeff Kanzelberger adds,

With KI’s help we were able to convey

ow the building was intended to be used.”

nstead of selecting “library” furniture to fit

he function of the space, the planning

ommittee selected furniture to fit the needs

f the students and a new way of learning

nd thinking.

Challengesrom an afterthought to the center of

ampus activity, the library evolved to

ntegrate technological capabilities, while

till providing flexibility and collaboration.

With the building complete, there was the

dditional challenge to incorporate these

ntentions in existing spaces. KI’s role

ncluded project consultation, vision

essions, space planning, furniture designnd layout.

ResultsThe result is a library that features a variety

f gathering places for library patrons,

more computer spaces, and 50 percent

more materials storage. It offers a full range

f 21st century technological capabilities

om wireless internet access to meeting

ooms equipped for multi-media. It now

onveys an open, adaptive environment

hat is very flexible and accommodating. KI

rovided the flexible, attractive furniturehat let it all happen.

There’s a high metabolic rate in libraries

oday,” says Kanzelberger. “They keep

hanging. If new furnishings and building

esigns support that metabolism, that’s the

measure of success.”

Maciejewski agrees, “Every single space is

n use from the curriculum library to

assrooms, group study areas and lounge

reas. The whole place is just filled with

eople.”

The library has become the new center of

he campus,” says Flynn. “It’s a social hub

hat acts as a gateway between the gown

he campus) and the town.”

The shelving is very easy to use. Shelving

warm and inviting, not sterile.”

Many of the offices include lounge furniture

r tables with chairs for small meetings.

unctional,” says Maciejewski. “They allow

econfiguration of space. People are very
