  2. 2. Multiple disabilities is a disability category under IDEA. As you might expect, children with multiple disabilities have two or more disabling conditions that affect learning or other important life functions. To qualify for special education services under this category, both of the student's disorders must be so significant that her educational needs could not be met in programs that are designed to address one of the disabilities alone.

  3. 3. Limited speech or communication;
    Difficulty in basic physical mobility;
    Tendency to forget skills through disuse;
    Trouble generalizing skills from one situation to another
    A need for support in major life activities (e.g., domestic, leisure, community use, vocational).
    Characteristics
  4. 4. Learn at own level with proper support.
    Create age appropriate adaptive skills.
    Physical therapy to help with independent travel.
    Knowing of hearing/visual impairment to alter lessons.
    Provide alternate forms form communication (technology).
    Suggested Learning Strategies
  5. 5. Team of parents, teachers, physical therapists, assistive technology teachers, and any number of additional support staff.
    Specific steps to success need to be identified, and timelines set for each educational objective.
    Resources and supports to achieve goals should be defined and addressed.
    Peer tutoring.
    Tutoring is not a one-way relationship.
