• Microblogging platform and social networking site – Founded 2007; 2013 sold to Yahoo! for $1.1 billion – Hosts 184 million blogs; 90 million+ visitors per month – 83 billion posts; 97 million new ones each day – 900% growth 2012-2013 – 42% US-based traffic; 16% California – Average visit is 14 minutes

• Greater than Facebook and Twitter •  2% of users visit 30+ times a month. 40% of users visit 1 – 30

times, while 58% only visit once a month

– Most popular with young adults 18-29 •  66% of users are under 35; 39% under 25 •  51% male; 49% female •  65% college educated • More popular than Facebook among 13-25 year olds

– 29% of audience are Hispanic and African-American •  16% exceeds US average (9%) Hispanic population

Controversies

• 2011 Chain letter scam affected about 130K • 2012 Cross scripting worm infects 8600 blogs

• NSFW Content – Porn is allowed but required to have NSFW label – About 2-4% of content – Videos cannot be uploaded but can be embedded

• Self-harm Content – Self harm, pro-suicide, and pro-ana blogs were allowed

but have been banned since 2012
