Cross-Language Mediationin Foreign LanguageTeaching and TestingMaria Stathopoulou

This inspired book is a must-read for

professionals in the field of language teaching

assessment of learners' cross-language mediation competence: the

stirring concern of this well-researched study.

This study builds upon and advances earlier

research on gatekeeping encounters, showing

the importance of the presence of co-

membership or its opposite – the establishment of a we-relation or a

you-relation among interlocutors. Combining approaches from

interactional sociolinguistics, conversation analysis, and cultural

studies, the book presents compelling transcribed examples and

provides fresh insights into the performance of social identity in

face-to-face interaction.

FREDERICK ERICKSON, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LOS ANGELES, USA

Linking Discourse Studiesto Professional PracticeEdited by Lubie Grujicic-Alatriste

This book is a wake-up call to applied linguists

everywhere. It illustrates what many linguists

have tacitly understood but have been

unfortunately slow to act upon. It convincingly

demonstrates that education is not the only area

in which linguistic expertise has important

insights to offer. Like no other book, it provides a

stimulating menu of models in which linguists can (and should)

apply their theory and research to a wide range of other areas,

including business, mediation, negotiation, politics, family

communication, and the media.

ROGER W. SHUY, PROFESSOR EMERITUS, GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY, USA

This book examines how discourse analysts could best disseminatetheir research findings in real world settings. Each chapter presentsa study of spoken or written discourse with authors putting forwarda plan for how to engage professional practice in their work, usingthis volume’s Framework for Application.

The Multilingual CityVitality, Conflict and ChangeEdited by Lid King and Lorna Carson

This important new volume reports research on

Europe’s irretrievably multilingual cities and

states where the challenges and rewards of

multilingualism are sharply defined. Municipal

authorities and national governments need to

pay much more attention to the city as a site of

language planning, of possible new conceptions

of citizenship, and sites where much of the future of human

relations will be negotiated.

JOSEPH LO BIANCO, THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

This book is an exploration of the vitality of multilingualism and itscritical importance in and for contemporary cities. It examines howthe city has emerged as a key driver of the multilingual future, aconcentration of different, changing cultures which somehowmanage to create a new identity.

Local Languaging, Literacyand Multilingualism in aWest African SocietyKasper Juffermans

The book is revolutionary in extolling languaging

and ‘grassroots’ literacies as legitimate discourse

practices, and as reflecting localised agency with

implications for global mobility, in the semiotic

landscapes of Africa, and Gambia in particular. In

capturing the dynamically integrated multilingual/languaging

practices in place, the book highlights the multiple identity

affiliations available to the speakers. This book is one solid

contribution to the languaging turn in the new sociolinguistics of

globalisation.

FELIX BANDA, UNIVERSITY OF THE WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA

This book aims to enhance and challenge our understanding oflanguage and literacy as social practices against the background ofheightened globalisation. Juffermans presents an ethnographicstudy of The Gambia, arguing that language should beconceptualised as a verb (languaging) rather than a countable noun(a language, languages).

The questionin this anthology is not 'Can writing be taught?' but 'How can weinspire students to embrace the creative process no matter whatthey write?'

Early Language Learning inSchool Contexts Series Editor: Janet Enever

The early learning of languages in instructed contexts has

become an increasingly common global phenomenon

during the past 30 years, yet there remains much work to be

done to establish the field as a distinctive area for

interdisciplinary investigation. This international research

series covers children learning second, foreign and

additional languages in educational contexts between the

ages of approximately 3 and 12 years. The series will take a

global perspective and encourage the sharing of theoretical

discussion and empirical evidence on transnational issues.

It will provide a platform to address questions raised by

teachers, teacher educators, and policy makers who are

seeking understanding of theoretical issues and empirical

evidence with which to underpin policy development,

implementation and classroom procedures for this young

age group. Themes of particular interest for the series

include: teacher models and teacher development, models

of early language learning, policy implementation,

motivation, approaches to teaching and learning, language

progress and outcomes, assessment, intercultural learning,

sustainability in provision, comparative and transnational

perspectives, cross-phase transfer issues, curriculum

integration – additional suggestions for themes are also

most welcome.

Proposals should be sent to Laura Longworth

Language at WorkSeries Editor: Jo Angouri

Language at Work is a new series designed to bring together

scholars interested in workplace research. The series aims

to create space for exchange of ideas and dialogue and

seeks to explore issues related to power, leadership, politics,

teamwork, culture, ideology, identity, decision making and

motivation across a diverse range of contexts, including

corporate, health care and institutional settings. Language

at Work welcomes mixed methods research and it will be of

interest to researchers in linguistics, international

management, organisation studies, sociology, medical

sociology and decision sciences.

Proposals should be sent to Kim Eggleton

Researching MultilinguallySeries Editors: Prue Holmes, Richard Fay and Jane AndrewsConsulting Editor: Alison Phipps

The increasingly diverse character of many societies means

that many researchers may now find themselves engaging

with multilingual opportunities and complexities as they

design, carry out and disseminate their research. This may

be the case regardless of whether or not there is an explicit

language and multilingual aspect to their research. This

book series proposes to address the methodological,

practical, ethical and other options and dilemmas that

researchers face as they go about their research. How do

they design their research methodology to account for

multilingual possibilities and practices? How do they

manage such linguistic complexities in the research

domain? What are the implications for their research

outcomes? Research methods training programmes only

rarely address these questions and there is, as yet, only a

limited literature available. This series proposes to establish

a new track of theoretical, methodological, and ethical

researcher praxis that researchers can draw upon in

research(er) contexts where multiple languages are at play

or might be purposefully used. In particular, the series

proposes to offer critical and interpretive perspectives on

research practices and endeavours in inter- and multi-

disciplinary contexts and especially where languages, and

the people speaking and using them, are under pressure,

pain, and tension.

Proposals should be sent to Anna Roderick

Studies in Knowledge Productionand ParticipationSeries Editors: Mary Jane Curry and Theresa Lillis

Questions about the relationships among language and

other semiotic resources (such as image, film/video, sound)

and knowledge production, participation, and distribution

are increasingly coming to the fore in the context of debates

about globalisation, multilingualism, and new technologies.

Much of the existing work published on knowledge

production has focused on formal academic/scientific

knowledge; this knowledge is beginning to be produced and

communicated via a much wider range of genres, modes,

and media including, for example, blogs, wikis, and Twitter

feeds, which have created new ways of producing and

communicating knowledge, as well as opening up new

ways of participating. Fast-moving shifts in these domains

prompt the need for this series which aims to explore facets

of knowledge production including: what is counted as

knowledge, how it is recognized and rewarded, and who has

access to producing, distributing, and using knowledge(s).

One of the key aims of the series is to include work by

scholars located outside the ‘center’, and to include work

written in innovative styles and formats.

Proposals should be sent to Anna Roderick

Translation, Interpreting andSocial Justice in a GlobalisedWorldSeries Editors: Philipp Angermeyer and Katrijn Maryns

Translation, Interpreting and Social Justice in a Globalised

World is an international series that welcomes authored

monographs and edited collections that address translation

and interpreting in settings of diversity, globalisation,

migration and asylum. Books in the series will discuss how

translation and interpreting practices (or their absence) may

advance or hinder social justice. A key aim of the series is to

encourage dialogue between scholars and professionals

working in translation and interpreting studies and those

working in other linguistic disciplines, such as

sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology.

Books in the series will cover both translation and

interpreting services provided by state and corporate entities,

as well as informal, community-based translation and

interpreting. We welcome proposals covering any

combinations of languages (including Sign languages) and

from a wide variety of geographical contexts. A guiding aim

of the series is to empower those who may be disadvantaged

by their lack of access to majority or official languages, and

as such proposals which bridge the gap between theoretical

and practical domains are particularly encouraged.

Topics which may be addressed by books in the series

include (but are not limited to):

• Medical settings (including care settings and provision ofpublic health information)

• Legal settings (law enforcement, court, prison, counselling)

• Educational settings (including community-basededucation)

• Asylum and migration procedures• Access to democracy and citizenship• Interactions with business and private-sector institutions• The media and minority-language broadcasting andpublishing

• Ethical and political considerations in translation• Cultural translation• Translation and language rights• Translation and intercultural relations and conflictProposals should be sent to Laura Longworth
