In 2009
• PROBLEM:
– Existing trip planning tools couldn’t hand multi-modal trips
– Proprietary software with expensive licensing/limited customization
• SOLUTION:
– TriMet funded and led development of an open source trip planning system
– This grew into what is now known as OTP
OTP has been widely adopted worldwide
What has changed since then?
Open source transit software environment has evolved
• OpenTripPlanner (OTP): multimodal trip planning
• The Transit Clock / Transitime: Arrival /departure predictions
• OneBusAway (OBA): real-time information and APIs
• OpenStreetMap (OSM): maps
• Pelias: geocoding
Open source transit software environment has evolved
• Active / vibrant development community
• Companies are available to help implement and provide support
• Low cost
• Feature rich
• Increasingly adopted by transit agencies
Shared use modes have proliferated
Transit data has moved beyond the schedule
• Real time information is now:
– Widely available
