Introduction

Welcome to my multigenre project on Jonathan Larson’s Musical Rent. The musical

RENT is about these eight characters who call themselves “starving artist” and they are, except

for one, all affected by HIV/AIDS. In this project you will five varying genres all in which I am

trying to convey the main themes of the show, which deal with the hard times of living in New

York, being homosexual, the rise of HIV/AIDS in the 80’s90’s , and the importance of having

friends and love.

The first genre is a letter to the reader giving them some background on the characters

that are portrayed in the show, such what they’ve been through, where they have been, and what

they are doing in their lives now. The second genre is my own definition of struggling because I

believe everyone has their own definition of struggling and in the show such as being poor, gay,

having HIV or AIDS. The next genre is narrative followed by dialogue, in the show there is a

particular scene where Mar and roger goes with Roger for the for first time the life support group

for people affected with HIV/AIDS. I wrote that in my own perspective trying to channel what

would've happened in that situation. And feeling out what those people must've felt. The

following genre is another narrative followed by a little survival guide of living in New York.

They say if you can make there, you can make it anywhere. And part of me really does believe

because it an expensive place to live in and a dangerous one unless you have some friends or

family living up there to help you out. The last genre is diary written by the dead ex girlfriend of

Roger. I wanted to include this because she was a hidden character in the show who is the main

cause of Roger’s depression and why he has HIV. And the fact that she told him through a

suicide letter makes it all the more tragic.

Page 3: Multi genre Project on Rent: Musical

In conclusion, I wanted to do my project on this musical because it really spoke to me the

first time I saw it. I was so moved by the passion and how close this was to real life events. I

personally don’t know the stigma of having HIV/AIDS or just struggling to make a living in your

life but this show opened my eyes.

A Letter to the Reader

December 13, 1996

Dear Reader,

Allow me to introduce you to eight characters from a well known musical. First one is Mark Cohen, Mark is a struggling Jewish-American who makes documentaries and narrates throughout the entire musical. He is Roger’s best friend and roommate, he use to be the boyfriend of Maureen Johnson, who left him for another woman named Joanne. Mark is the only one out of the seven characters who does not have HIV/AIDS and he keeps trying to have a positive outlook on things.

Next, is Roger Davis the roommate of Mark Cohen. Roger use to be a successful guitarist and songwriter, but now he is a struggling musician affected with HIV/AIDS, which he discovered in note left by his girlfriend before she took her own life, his sole goal before dying is to write the best song before he dies but has not been able to to play his guitar in a year. Roger is depressed and sullen but at times can be expressive.

We move on to, Mimi Marquez. Mimi is a 19 year-old stripper struggling with heroin addiction, as a result that was how she contracted HIV/AIDS. She meets Roger and falls in love with him, Roger feels reluctant about his feelings and is unable to commit to a have a relationship with her.. Mimi’s character is seen as alive and youthful with optimism she is also very sexy and has dark secrets. Even though Mimi appears to have lived through a lot she still seeks to live everyday to fullest without regrets.

Next is Benny Coffin.. The ex roommate of Mark and Roger and who is now a yuppie sell out and the landlord of Mark and Roger. He’s going to evict them.. Benny use to have goals and ideals.

We move on to Maureen Johnson, a bisexaul, firey, performing artist and Marks ex-girlfreind. She’s sexy and flirty and funny. She always speaks her mind and isn't afraid to get into a fight.

Now we have Joanne Jefferson, a lawyer, activist, lesbian, and girlfriend to Maureen. Joanne struggles with jealousy. Although, Joanne comes from an affluent family she feels compelled to help those less fortunate.

Enter Tom Collins, Collins is a gay, genius, anarchist, professor who was recently expelled from MIT. His partner is Angel Schunard and their relationship is the heart of the show since they both have HIV/AIDS they know they can safely be with each other knowing that the future holds nothing for them.. Their love is real and pure from the heart. They live without fear and regret.

Last but not least is Angel Schunard, Angel is a young drag queen percussionist, who quickly falls in love with Collins. He is the most generous and careless person in the show and embraces life to the fullest. In the second act of the show Angel’s death brings everyone together and teaches them how to live without regret and how friendship and love is the most important thing in life to have.

Life Support

In Life Support there are people there in need of a support group to deal with having HIV/AIDS or being gay or both and there you’ll probably find that a lot of people have little to look forward to since their own blood is practically betraying them. And they find some of what the supporter says is suspect. Because they are use to relying on instinct and trying to open up to things they don’t know. Because like in the song, reason says they should've died three years ago. And that there’s only them, there’s only that, forget regret or life is theirs to lose.

Paul: Support Leader Mark Cohen Ok everyone lets start today’s support Me? Oh um. I’m actually not...I by introducing ourselves. We’ll start with you mean I don’t have. I’m not. in the blonde hair. Mark. Mark, I’m mark. Excellent, now we’ll continue with the affirmation … *They must think insane* “Forget Regrets, or life is yours to miss” Gordon

Excuse me, Paul? Yes Gordon what is it? I have a problem with that credo. Why is that? My T-cells are Low today I regret I

regret that news, okay? But, Gordon how to do feel today? Okay Just “okay” ? Yeah, it’s the best I’ve felt all year. But why choose fear? I’m a New Yorker. Fear is my Life.

“In daylights, in sunsets In midnights, in cups of coffee

In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife In five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes

How do you measure, a year in the life?”

  Christmas Eve

It’s Christmas there are starving artist out in the streets. Two of them live together in a powerless loft, Mark and Roger. As Mark and Roger check the answering machine they await the surprise of their friend Collins a gay anarchist professor. At the same time Benny Coffin III , the new landlord, is calling to forego their rent. Meanwhile, Collins is on the way, but gets stopped by a mugger which is when Angel comes to the rescue.

Welcome to New York

A soul searching

Soul bearing

and an Unforgiving place for starving artist.

Every street corner has a market and bum.

No one is nice to you.

Especially if you claim to be an artist.

Especially if you’re gay.

Especially if you have HIV/AIDS.

Especially if you’re gay and you have HIV/AIDS.

Remember:

To never look anyone in the eye

Don’t talk to anyone on the subway

Most definitely don't ever look a certain way.

“How about love? How about love? How about love? Measure in love

Cherish’s Diary

“Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes How do you measure the life of a woman or a man?

In truths that she learned Or in times that he cried

In bridges he burned or the way that she died!”

Reflection

What surprised me the most during the writing process, was how inspired I felt. I’ve never been

so enthusiastic about writing. I think it’s because it involves more than one genre of writing,

newspaper article, short story etc. I loved it. What was hard about writing these papers was

coming up with a creative storyline and yet make it connect together all the while also making it

all have meaning. I enjoyed doing the research on topics of HIV/AIDS during the 90’s and 80’s

bring a lot insight. I feel like I could've done more research, however I still wanted to put my

own ideas and thoughts into it. My advice to future students doing this project is to pick a topic that

you are really interested in and it will make completing the project much easier.
