In 2011, photographer Fien Muller (°1978) and sculptor Hannes

van Severen (°1979) made their debut as a design duo at

Galerie Valerie Traan. What was perhaps at first a pleasant little

diversion for the two visual artists into that frontier zone between

art and design, quickly took on a different dimension.

Their joint furniture project attracted international attention

virtually immediately and their furniture sculptures can be seen

in leading galleries and museums in Belgium, as well as in

London, Berlin, Milan, Copenhagen, Paris and New York.

A broad selection of their work has now been collected as part

of the new valerie objects label, an initiative by Veerle Wenes,

Axel Van den Bossche and Frank Lambert.

This marks a promising sequel to their much-noted entry into

the world of design. Fien and Hannes have been on an inspired

quest for sculpturally interesting furniture objects since 2011

– items that are spontaneous and produced with apparent

effortlessness. The universe that they create together dovetails

very naturally with their work as separate artists.

The crucial difference lies in their functionality. Their artistic

vision influences their view of how objects can be placed

and used within a space. Their furniture sculptures can

be used by different people together, separately or all at

the same time. They also usually offer additional functional

possibilities, such as combining seating, storage, working

and lighting into the same object. But for the artists, the

starting point and finishing touch at all times is the question:

would we want to live with it ourselves?

Their fascination for certain materials and the properties they

offer, their individual feeling for colour and the characteristic

tension between the taut and the playful, the static and

mobility create continuity and identity for their work. At the

same time, new associations and interpretations deliver the

necessary surprises.

Their much-praised use of colour stems partly from the

artists’ characteristic way of working. As do their fine,

dynamic lines. They enjoy working – including as artists

– with “found” building stone, such as existing, standard

materials with their typical colours, shapes, properties

and dimensions. They love assembling their prototypes

themselves in a simple, intuitive manner, without involving

cumbersome technical processes. They don’t do too much

preliminary design on paper, but prefer to start working

directly with spatial profiles. They see welding as a sort of

three-dimensional, life-size sketch.

A major strength of Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen

is that they produce items of furniture that are both visual

and sculptural by creating many more dimensions in space,

as well as in other ways. The beauty is that this injection of

poetry is also transposed into innovative, functional added

value.

about valerie objects

When Axel and Frank (Serax) and Veerle (Valerie Traan Gallery)

first met, they discovered that joining forces could be highly

productive for them. Combining their own, sometimes intuitive,

and personal taste for the good and the beautiful and their volition

to communicate pieces from designers and artists to appropriate

audiences, they decided to start up valerie objects.

Valerie objects is going to be launched (summer 2015) with

“The Cutlery Project” and a fine selection of Muller Van Severen

pieces. The Cutlery Project is brand-new cutlery by international

designers Jinhyun Jeon (KR/NL), Muller Van Severen (B),

Maarten Baas (NL), Studio Simple (B/NL), Koichi Futatsumata

(JPN) and Studio Wieki Somers (NL). To be launched in June

2015 at le Musée des Arts Décoratifs – Paris.

Valerie objects shapes its collection by working with designers,

architects and artists. The aim is to translate the signature works

of these creative minds into tangible objects. Pride of place will

always go to authentic thinkers, to pieces that have been carefully

thought about, designed and fashioned by intelligent hands.

But valerie objects also goes looking for those objects that

already exist, but which have not yet seen the light of day. Pieces

that have not found their way at the right time, right place or to the

right person. It’s a form of “recycling” ideas. A sustainable quest

for hidden talent.

These pieces will come into the collection when the time is ripe

for them. When the hands that made them are ready and when

everyone can see that they are good.

about the art director

Veerle Wenes is independent curator and the owner of

Valerie Traan Gallery in Antwerp (B). She has staged

20 exhibitions there since 2010. All of them totally out

of the box. “Valerie Traan Gallery is a place for objects

and subjects, for topics and themes, for functional and

subjective ways of looking at things,” says Veerle Wenes.

“I often walk a fine line between design, architecture and

art. Each one of the artists, architects and designers

whom I exhibit is a genuine thinker with whom I feel a real

connection.” For Grand Hornu (B), she was the curator

of Le Fabuleux Destin du Quotidien (2010) and the family

stories of Le Labo des Héritiers (2014) featuring the

Vermeersch, Scarpa, Bakker and Van Severen families.

She is part of the expert and advisory board at the Ghent

Design Museum.

about the owner Serax

Axel Van Den Bossche and Frank Lambert are successfully

putting Serax on the international map. Today, Serax has

no fewer than 4,000 interior objects, ranging from original

glasswork and elegant dinnerware to items of interest

and contemporary furniture. Serax is all about innovative,

accessible and affordable design and works with leading

designers from home and abroad. Valerie objects operates

as a new, exclusive and independent label within this

dynamic group.
