Level ladders
The 4 areas you will be assessed on for this project are listed below. You have been given the level ladders so
that you know exactly what is expected of your work and so that you understand how your work will be marked.
As a year 8 you should be aiming to achieve at least a level 5a. If you always check what is expected, you will
achieve as much as you possibly can.

As part of this project we are going to learn about a type of art and use this knowledge to help us design
our mugs. The type of art (sometimes called the ‘art movement’) is called ‘Pop Art’.
Pop art was popular around the 1950’s, 1960’s and even the 1970’s and had 2 very interesting artists
that contributed to its success.
Pop art was all about using famous people, advertisements, places and movies to create iconic images
to represent that period in time. Two famous artists from this time period (and the people we will be
looking at) are Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.
Andy Warhol—Famous for creating the Campbell's soup can painting and iconic images of Marilyn
Monroe (a world famous actress).
Roy Lichtenstein—Famous for creating images as comic strips.
Have a look at the images below to help you get a better understanding of the artists we are going to be looking at.
Andy Warhol
Roy Lichtenstein
Artists
Homework 1; Mood board
As well as the 2 artists we have spoken about, there is 1 more that we may find useful. For your
homework you must create an A4 mood board of images of the work of Takashi Murakami, Andy
Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. The Japanese artist Murakami has created a modern type of pop art and you may find that you like his work and want to use him as inspiration to create your designs.
Homework 3; Social, Moral, Spiritual, Cultural.
You should research recycling and in particular, recycled paper. You need to produce a piece of work
(either a poster or written explanation) explaining how paper is recycled but more importantly, how
much difference this can make on the worlds trees. You should also consider what countries the trees originally come from and how you think this could affect the pollution across the world. In this piece
of work you need to include facts and your personal opinion.
Homework 2; Questionnaire
You must create a questionnaire to ask friends and family about what sort of design you should make.
You are going to create the design yourself and then use a piece of software called Photoshop to cre-
ate the design, but you still need to consider what your target audience would like on the product. You should consider which of the 3 artists they like best (you can use your mood board to help them un-
derstand their work), what colours they would like you to use and what they would like on the image.
Your questionnaire needs to have around 5 or 6 questions included.
Homework 4; Spelling test
1. Software, 2. Sublimation, 3. Graphics, 4. Recycling, 5. Packaging, 6. Production, 7. Environment,
8. Manufacture, 9. Transfer, 10. Properties
Homework 5; Research production techniques
You need to produce a research document detailing how packaging is produced. You need to look at
how machines such as a die cutter and laser cutter work and how mass production is used to create
thousands of the same product. This will help you to understand how we are producing our product and packaging.
Homework 6; Mug packaging
You must use the sheet in this booklet to produce a design for the packaging of your final product.
You need to use the template provided. Remember that the template we will actually use is much big-
ger than the one on the page. You must also remember to relate your product and your packaging to each other and to the artist you chose.
Homework 7; Evaluating your product (class discussion and homework)
You now need to consider what you would do to improve your product. Use the evaluating ladder
and look at each level (especially levels 6, 7 and 8). Think about how you will reach those levels and
how you will show your higher order thinking skills. This should be discussed as a class and you should make sure you understand exactly what to do to achieve as high as possible.
Homework
Design brief
You have been asked to design and make a mug and packaging that would be suitable for people aged
12-18. Your product must be based on pop art and you must use the Photoshop software to produce
it. You must choose one of the 3 artists we have looked at and use them as inspiration to create 3 ideas to help you with your final design. You are not allowed to copy an image from one of the designers,
but you can use parts of their work as inspiration.
You will be given a maximum size to create your design in and you must consider what the finished
mug will look like as well as why it would be suitable for the age range.
The artist I will base my idea on will be__________________________________________________

Design Specification
Think about all the things that are important for your product to include. Using the mind-map
and discussing with a partner, you must decide how important each point is and write it in the
appropriate box below. Do not forget to use the level ladder at the front of the booklet to help.

Design Specification Higher Order Thinking
You have considered all of the points for your specification. You have explained what it must
include. Now, you need to explain some of the measurable criteria that you need to consider in
your project and explain in detail why this is necessary.
You also need to include detail about industrial methods of producing the product.
Use the level ladder to help you.
Key words: Printing, Sublimation, Heat, Transfer, Process, Quality
Design Idea 1
Now you know what your product should include, it is important that you try and create 3 ideas for
your mug. These ideas will help you produce your final design that you will create using Photoshop. It is very important that you think about your target audience and use your designer as inspiration when
creating your ideas. Remember that you can use any of the 3 artists as inspiration for your designs.
Use the space below to carefully produce your idea. Make sure you look at the level ladder to help you
achieve as much as you can. You also need to explain about some of the tools, equipment and software
we will be using and why as well as explaining why you have created your design the way you have.

Sublimation is the process of transformation directly from the solid phase to the gaseous phase or from the gaseous to the solid phase
How do I make my unique designed mug?
You will need: 1) An inkjet printer. 2) You will need a set of Sublimation ink cartridges to replace the stand-ard ink cartridges.
3) You will also need a specially coated paper that will ensure you trans-fer most of the inks onto your mug.
4) A roll of tape to fix the image to the mug for transfer purposes.
5) A paper cutter (guillotine), although not essential, will certainly make it easier to trim your transfers to required size, also keep a pair of scissors handy
6) A sublimation-coated mug. These polymer-coated mugs in conjunction with the special inks, are what makes the process possible. 7) I.T facilities - you will need a programme to create your design on (Adobe's Photoshop).
8) High temperature mug printing machine for the sublimation to occur.

You should be able to use your homework and class discussions to explain why deforestation caus-
es problems. Consider why we need to think about the materials we use and where we source them
from.___________________________________________________________________________

Evaluation Against the Specification
Look back at your Design Specification and particularly at the things you said your design
MUST and SHOULD do. Write these statements in the table below and tick or cross whether
each design achieves each aim.

Explain which of the three designs you will
choose to go on & make and why:
Mug Packaging.
You should now be well on your way to producing a high
quality image for your mug.
You are also expected to pro-
duce a packaging design. This packaging will be produced us-
ing a NET and will be given to
you for you to produce your own design. The packaging is
important to our project because
it promotes and protects our product but also shows our cus-
tomers what our theme is.
In the space provided, you need to produce a rough design that
you will produce on the packag-
ing. Remember that it needs to relate to the design on your mug
and it needs to relate to the art-
ist you chose.
Mug Packaging Higher Order Thinking.
You should now be well on your way to producing a high quality packaging for your product. To enable you to achieve level 7 and 8 on the level ladder, you need to be able to create a model of
your product. This will not only help you with your design details, but may also help you to im-
prove your final product.
Read level 7 and 8 of the level ladder (Designing).
Solving problems During Manufacture
When you are making something it virtually never goes exactly according to plan
and there are always problems to solve. As you are making your Mug take note of these problems you solve and record them below.
Problem 1
What problem did you have?
How did you solve this problem?

Mug Evaluating Higher Order Thinking.
You need to be able to develop your understanding of how people see your final product. Is it as good as they expected? Is it what they wanted?
In order to achieve level 7 and 8 of the Evaluating level ladder, you need to design some tests
that will help you to understand how good your final product is. You also need to use numerical data to help you understand how you could improve your product.
Use the level ladder to help you.
