Features

The SME Server has many features. We shall be explaining many of them.

Mail Server

A Mail Server refers to the combination of an SMTP Server, IMAP and POP3 Server.SMTP, IMAP and POP3 are the names of the protocols which are used to define how two applications shall communicate with each other.

Mail Server (SMTP)

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) servers handle the sending of your e‑mail messages to the Internet. The SMTP server handles outgoing e‑mail, and is used in conjunction with a POP3 or IMAP incoming e‑mail server.

SMTP

SMTP is the method used for sending outgoing mail from your client software (like thunderbird) to the mail server. Also the mail server uses SMTP to deliver it to other destination servers. SMTP is also used to receive mail from other mail servers who want to send to your domain. For example atrc.net.pk is a domain.

IMAP

Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is a protocol which defines how mail is delivered to the client. It manages the folders on the mail server. IMAP allows multiple clients (like thunderbird) simultaneously connected to the same mailbox, and through flags stored on the server, different clients accessing the same mailbox at the same or different times can detect state changes made by other clients.

POP3

The Post Office Protocol (POP) is an application-layer Internet standard protocol used by local e-mail clients to retrieve e-mail from a remote server over a TCP/IP connection. It defines how the inbox folder is to be accessed by email client softwares. It is usually used to download emails from the mail server (inbox folder only) and into the client software. And delete the downloaded emails from the server inbox.

Web Mail

Web Mail is a software which can access the mailboxes via IMAP and POP and present them in a format which is visible in a browser. Our SME server provides a web mail interface so a user does not need a client software on their computer to see the mail folders. They have both options. A browser or a mail client.

Firewall

A firewall is a system that restricts the incoming and outgoing network traffic based on sets of rules. It is useful to prevent unnecessary communication between computers outside anywhere on the Internet and those inside the organization which do not need to be probed for any services.

Firewall

By having a firewall preventing outside computers from being able to talk to computers inside, the internal computers are free to exchange information and services with less restrictions and having to be configured to check each and every request. Like working in a private room where only employees are allowed by security guards.

Chat Server

Text chat can be a good way to keep in touch for immediate communications without having to send an email or making a call. A private in company chat server allows all the employees to communicate with each other and prevents interruptions from all other social networks during work time.

VPN

A virtual private network (VPN) extends a private network across a public network, such as the Internet. It enables a computer or network-enabled device to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if it were directly connected to the private network, while benefiting from the functionality, security and management policies of the private network.

Traffic Management

As more traffic gets to go through the internet, the size of the network connection becomes a bottleneck. If bandwidth management is used, then all applications can be guaranteed to work because they shall be allocated a certain bandwidth. Even if the other users are requesting more than is available.

File Server

A file server is a computer attached to a network that has the primary purpose of providing a location for shared disk access, i.e. shared storage of computer files (such as documents, sound files, photographs, movies, images, databases, etc.) that can be accessed by the workstations that are attached to the same computer network.

Print Server

A print server, or printer server, is a computer that connects printers to client computers over a network. It accepts print jobs from the computers and sends the jobs to the appropriate printers, queuing the jobs locally to accommodate the fact that work may arrive more quickly than the printer can actually handle.
