There are still stingers in the beaches at Wagait Beach even though the cooler weather is bringing down the temperature of the sea.J a c k D r a v i t s k i w a s

swimming at No Name Beach on Saturday June 7 when he was stung on the back of his leg by a box jellyfish.Jack said the pain felt far

worse than a chinese burn and his mother said there were obvious welts when he was first stung. She said lots of vinegar

and hot packs had brought the pain down. Luckily Jack wasn’t stung badly and no scarring tenticle marks could be seen on his leg on the day of the sting. Even though Jack was

feeling fine just hours after the sting he was taken to RDH as a precaution.

Never in the four and a half years that ‘Mad Max’ Tate has been flying his gyrocopter around the Cox Peninsula has he seen as many crocodiles in just 30 minutes as he did on a flight he piloted on June 10. Three large crocs were

spotted from the air on his gyrocopter trip, the largest at One Fella Creek. All of the crocodile sightings

were close to the shore. The other two were seen at Two Fella Creek and heading east just off the Erickson St beach. The spottings are especially

disturbing because they coincide with the time of the year that locals start swimming in the ocean again. Charlie Manolis a renowned

the Wagait Beach Ranger? Chasing wayward dogs, locking them up and holding them for ransom? I t m i g h t s o u n d l i k e

a dream job fo r some residents, but they need not hold their breath. Despite dog laws being

discussed at the last council meeting, the council CEO Michael Campaign has confirmed there aren’t any plans to introduce bylaws for animal management in the near future.Campaign explained the

Wagait Shire Council does not have bylaws, which means the council cannot enforce rules on dog behaviour or penalise breaking the rules. “I think it will happen if

there is an amalgamation, then bylaws such as that will have to be introduced.”In the meantime all those

who have ranger tendencies will have to wait.

L o c a l G o v e r n m e n t minister Dave Tollner may have back-tracked o n h i s i n t e n t i o n t o force the Wagait Shire to amalgamate with Be lyuen or poss ib ly force both to join at least one other harbour-side council.An open mee t i ng t o

People going to and from work on Friday June 27 were offered a spectacle of an army exercise gone wrong instead of their normal commute. According to one local

the exercise was to drive two armoured personnel carriers onto a f loating

the pontoon got s tuck on the rocks leaving the group the only option of waiting some 12 hours for the tide to come up to float it off again.

be held twice yearly it would give concerned residents a chance to express their concerns as well as the council being able to discuss some of the ongoing issues,” he told the council.Fred listed concerns such

as rate rises, the level of council services, dump use and uncontrolled dogs as likely issues for discussion.

WAGAIT SHIRE COUNCIL

RATES & CHARGES 2014 - 2015 At its meeting on the 17 June 2014 the Council resolved as follows in respect of rates and charges for the year ending 30 June 2015: That pursuant to Section 155 of the Local Government Act 2008 the Council declares: 1. That it proposes to raise $203,425 in general rates for the

2014/2015 financial year. 2. The general rates are to be raised by way of a fixed charge of

$515 per allotment of rateable land within the Wagait Shire. 3. That the due date for the payment of rates shall be the 30th

September 2014. 4. The payment of general rates will be accepted by quarterly

instalments due on the 30 September 2014, 31 December 2014, 31 March 2015, and 30 June 2015.

5. A penalty of 17% per annum will be imposed on all rates and charges not paid by the due date for payment thereof.

Tip misuse The Wagait tip is a constant source of frustration

for the council. Every few months however, it gets so bad our

team get close to pulling their hair out (perhaps not the CEO but certainly Gary and Robbo!)

See recent photos above showing noticeably bad tip use.

When using the tip PLEASE put things into the designated places and don’t just dump. It litters

the surrounding bush and makes the place a health hazard, not to mention an eyesore.

Rates time of year has come around again.Your rates are going up

again … by $15.It will bring the Wagait

Shire’s flat rate to a total of $515, a 3 per cent increase; or as the council doubtless would prefer, a rise of 29c a week.Last year’s rate hike was $56.There was speculation

based on the draft budget figures tabled at the May shire meeting that the increase would be 5 per

cent ($25), but some last minute pruning and shaving reduced that figure.Shire councillors agreed

to continue the tradition of not being paid, believed to be the only council in the Territory – and one of the very few in Australia – not to be paid sitting fees. They a l so r e j e c ted a

proposal to purchase a backhoe, noting that two Wagait Beach contractors had such machinery and questioning the utilisation of the machinery.

Ally in front of election countAccording to the Northern

Te r r i t o r y E l e c t o r a l Commission, based on election night figures Ally Richmond has 63% of the votes making her a clear leader.These figures don’t include

the postal or declaration votes but given the small number of voters who are expected to lodge postal votes, Ally is the most likely winner. The formal result can

be found on the Electoral Commission website and will be posted at the Council offices and supermarket notice board. The Wagaitear will publish

a full interview with the new Councillor in the August issue to find out how they plan to contribute to the council and community as a Councillor.

The chopper you heard landing on the oval on June 9 was the careflight team collecting a 10 year old local who was being taken to RDH for suspected spinal injuries after a trampoline fall. It took just 15 minutes

after the alarm was raised for the chopper to arrive and the flight nurse to be

taken to the girl’s home. She was then airlifted to RDH from the oval. Th i s i s a r ea s su r i ng

with the patient leaving hospital with no permanent injuries to her spine.

Pre-Heat oven to 180 degrees

1) Get a mixing bowl and put in 1/4 cup butter, half a cup sugar and an egg and mix together well. Gradually mix in 1 cup SR flour, 1 tablespoon cocoa and 1/2 cup of milk, then grate in a 200g block of yr fave chocolate- milk/dark/white or can use a flavoured one like rum-raisin/rocky road etc and mix well.

2) Get a baking or pudding dish and spray with oil, then pour in pudding mix. Mix together half cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon cocoa and sprinkle evenly over the top. Carefully pour over 1 and 1/2 cups boiling water over the top of the mix over the back of a spoon (so it doesn’t make a big hole in the cake)

3) Bake for 45 mins, take out, let cool for 5 mins. The sauce has now formed under the pudding.

Serve hot scoops of pudding with the sauce and cream/icecream etc.

“ I f y o u r s p i n e i s inflexibly stiff at 30 you are old, if it is completely flexible at 60, your are young.” – Jospeh Pilates (Return to Life through Contrology)The many facets of health

could keep me wr i t ing forever. So I’m starting with a topic that is my every day. As a Pilates practitioner, I

live and breathe movement. It’s what we are meant to do. We are multi directional creatures. Yet, as a species we are moving less and less. Our spine alone is capable

of moving in 14 different d i r e c t i o n s . R e d u c e d movement in your spine (or any part of your body) leads to compensatory movement patterns which can eventually lead to pain and injury. So, the answer is simple. Move your spine in the way it is designed. I think that we are pretty

fortunate as members of this community. The task of getting on and off the ferry demands strength, agility and good proprioceptive awareness. While some days this may seem inconvenient, the walk to and from the ferry, the motion of the boat, carrying shopping b a g s a n d n a v i g a t i n g choppy seas is keeping

your body and your mind working synergistically and optimizing the capabilities of your spine. So, when you arrive at

work, at home, at school and s i t i n t ha t cha i r, here are a few imagery exercises you can do to lengthen your spine:1. Imagine your head

is a helium balloon. Feel it floating off your shoulders.2. Imagine your spine

is a piece of string. The string is suspended from the ceiling, goes through the centre of your body and down to the ground. Imagine someone gently pull ing on either end of that string.3. Imagine the crown

of your head is a paint brush. Paint the ceil ing with that brush. Make a line backwards and forwards, make a line side to side. Now draw a circle and put a big dot in the middle of it.

These simple exercises are designed to improve pos tu re , a c t i va t e t he deep neck f lexors that support your head and reduce tension in the neck, shoulders and lower back. I’ll look out for you as you paint circles on the ceiling of the ferry roof!

My bok choy is about to be harvested. I can’t believe that in just one month I have tasty greens to stir-fry! My tomatoes have just

popped their first flowers so soon there will be cherry tomatoes galore as well. T h e c a p s i c u m s a n d

eggplants are moving along slower but I am still happy with their progress. Not being a fan of nasty

chemicals, I believe in letting the natural environment work for me. So I was very pleased to see paper wasps checking the leaves of the wombok, most likely for other insects that would have been trying to eat my veges! If I had sprayed chemicals

this situation may not have arisen because the chemicals affect the good insects just as much as the bad ones. I do agree there needs

to be checks and balances, as populations of pesky insects can really explode before your eyes so here are some tips. Firstly, you need to check

your plants a lot. One day there wil l be one teeny caterpillar, then next time you look there will be 500 and they will have eaten all your lettuce! As with nature and not using

chemicals to kill insects, there are few methods to keep numbers down except the gruesome. So don’t be afraid to squish them or even pull their heads off! It’s not me doing the decapitating, my grasshoppers go to the chickens, but I do know someone who really enjoys pulling the heads off grasshoppers. It’s a cruel world in the garden! Larger things like caterpillars

and grasshoppers are easy pickings but squishing a

mealy bug infestation not only turns your fingers an odd colour purple but there is usually too many of them.I resort to drenching them

in white oil. Best to apply in the afternoon as the oil can burn foliage in heavy sun.If you’re not that into

squishing you can try a homemade anti insect spray. Soak hot chillies, garlic and water with a dash of oil and a drop of dish liquid in 500 ml water for a week to produce a potent little spray.Dried or fresh chillies and

garlic are much the same but you do need to strain before adding to the spray bottle as the bits will clog the nozzle. Spray insects and infested foliage directly.I have a plague of light

green plant hoppers on my guava which has presented me with the perfect situation to use my home made spray. Plant hoppers are native but

a pest for the guava as they suck the sap, which leads to black mildew on the leaves. The mildew is a fungus that is not only unsightly but also reduces the leaf’s ability to photosynthesise. The chilli spray is the kind of thing I would use on the guava as too much foliage is covered by the hopper nymphs for me to apply white oil and the plant hoppers are large and mobile. One last tip is to watch out

for those ants! They will farm (move around and protect) your sap-sucking insects like scale insect and mealy bug. However, the verdict is undecided on the benefits of omnivorous ants like the green and meat ants because they also predate on those pesky insects that will attack your plants! **Next month –Common vege diseases. It was a good Wet for snakes and frogs and toads of course. The Cane Toad (Rhinella

marina) has been implicated in the decl ine of many mammal species across northern Australia, most notably the Northern Quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus). Quolls, or native cats, are

carnivorous marsupials that mainly kill their prey by biting down on the neck –where the toad’s venom glands are located. Both an ima ls usua l l y d ie in such encounters. O the r d r i ve r s o f t he

mammal decl ine in the north are inappropriate fire regimes (too much fire) and predation by feral cats. Not a l l mammals are

d e c l i n i n g t h ough – a group that may oddly be prospering from the toad’s ar r i va l a re the sma l l , nocturnal gliding possums (Petaurus spp.). Gliding possums breed in

dark tree hollows and, along with quolls, goannas were once key predators. However, the large lizards

that were often seen in town and on the beach dunes are no longer around. It means more gliders may

be reaching maturity and moving around the Estate. Unfortunately, some are

still falling prey to pet cats. The light at the end of this

dark hollow is that remains from Wagait (and other places in the Top End) are being analysed by scientists who are mak ing some interesting discoveries. The glider up here has

l ong been cons i de red a sub-species of Sugar Glider (P. breviceps) but some features are more reminiscent of the Squirrel Glider (P. norfolcensis), not previously known from the NT. One other possibility is that

it may be a new species– the Cox Pen petaurid perhaps?

On Saturday June 28 the Cox Country Club hosted the second MUFF and in the words of the MC Richard Margetson, it was bigger and better! The essence of a chance to

pay homage to the humble uku l e l e r ema ined the same, despite noticeable differences of the stalls and added bars to make it easier for punters to enjoy the well-designed line up – and they did. Crowds of people came

When northerners feel a southern connection

T e r r i t o r i a n s a r e a p a r o c h i a l m o b w h o rarely like to affiliate themselves with southern roots and even less with southern mindset. Once a year however

this all changes. It’s when the cooler southeasterly breezes start to blow, that

a three game window opens up deep and heart felt connections to either New South Wales or Queensland.Wagait Beach isn’t immune

f rom th is phenomena, with its residents either reconnecting with their b i r th s ta tes or o thers drawing sometimes very tenuous links to one state or the other. Over the highly charged

2014 Origin 100 and 101, some far fetched links and justifications flew up in conversations on the jetty.

For example one lion hearted NSW/ACT bred resident reportedly ditched his roots to follow the toads and win the affection of his maroon loving amora. Another local who

has stronger roots with Nandi and Suva than Brisbane or Sydney, switched his childhood formed allegiance from the Cane Toads to the Roaches after being exposed to some red neck hospitality in outback Queensland. By far the most

fascinating scenario c a m e f r o m a V i c t o r i a n , w h o

spent a good whack of his post pubescent youth north of the Tweed gaining an education and career, yet somehow formed an affinity for the Roaches.Depending on which side

of the Tweed your allegiance lies, it has been eight very long or not long enough years since the Roaches stuffed up the Toad’s post Origin party plans. Origin 101 was a game

of more big hits and mild fights than highlights, but in the end the mix of Chook

Daly in a suit, Paul Gallian busting blokes and, Jarryd Hayne driving his train that managed to see off a solid Queensland in an old fashion arm wrestle which ended with New South Wales Blues, upstaging the Queensland Maroons wining six to four. The scenes to follow were

beautiful for the general public but no doubt left real rugby league lovers feeling a little uncomfortable. Chooks bawled and kissed

blokes, Haynes dished out buckets of man love while Joey Johns choked up behind his microphone as he tried to hold back his emotions. Such was the passion

that one B lues lov ing, Queens land educated, Victorian born, Wagait local looked like a misty eyed father at his daughter’s wedding as he stroked the tears into his beard. With the dust settled, the

batten passed and a dead rubber ahead, the pre-game wisdom of a youthful petrol pump attendant at the Wagait Beach Supermarket resonates across the peninsula and out to the world. “Queensland won’t win’,

he said, “New South Wales have the youth and are going places.”

Wagait Beach has its very own Yogi. Since M a y t h i s y e a r J a d e Frederiksen has been offering her skills as a yoga teacher very Sunday at the council building. Q-How did Ben Miller,

the Wagait Beach yoga coordinator convince you to come to Wagait Beach every Sunday?A-”He offered chocolate,

champagne and rea l l y good whiskey… a l l the regular vices of a good yoga teacher! Just kidding . . . he was earnest and friendly, and had obviously identified an un-met need in a small community. The most beautiful thing

was that he took the initiative and made it happen. It inspires me when people walk the talk, and make ideas come to fruition.I just love that Yoga is not

just on the radar anymore,

it’s in people’s minds and hearts and conversations. I’ll support and offer it to anyone who shows an interest.”Q - W h a t h a s t h e

response been?A- “Fantastic... there was

a few weeks there when it was looking like Ben and I would need to start plans to extend the Wagait Beach community hall- we were jammed in there!”Q-Who is attending?A- “All types, all ages,

all smiles ... that’s what I love. The diversity of people enriches my experience, and I think the participant’s experience as well. The benefits of Yoga are

open to all. And everyone in Wagait Beach is so easy going... it’s fantastic; we can have a laugh and make it a fun experience.” Q-How long will the

classes be offered for?

A year after getting major work done, the 121 year old Charles Point Lighthouse is holding up well. Wa g a i t e a r ’ s H a n n a h

Seward was invited to tour the lighthouse on a routine Australian Maritime Safety Authority service in early June. Hannah commented “The

lighthouse looks fantastic. It’s in top condition and the view from the lamp chamber is stunning at 8am on a Dry season morning. I was surprised by the detail and decorative finishes. Thanks to AMSA for such an informative tour.”T h e C h a r l e s P o i n t

Lighthouse was shipped to Australia from the UK in 1893 and erected at the site where it still stands. The famous lighthouse has

guided boats in and out of Darwin Harbor with the help

of three keepers who lived at the site for 40 years. In 1933 the lighthouse

became unmanned running on diesel and in 1994 was upgraded to run on solar power, powering the 35 watt lamp to flash every five seconds. AMSA, a national body

manages the Charles Point Lighthouse. Unfortunately the lighthouse

is not open to visitors without an appointment.

Still a bright light on our horizon

A- “Unsure, but I plan to come every Sunday for as long as I’m in Darwin... it’s my favourite place to be on a Sunday morning. Even if the ferry ride is a little hairy sometimes.” Q- What do you believe

are the benefits of yoga?A - “ W o w , I h a v e

experienced so many in my life, it’s difficult to write them all! Physically, the benefits are un-deniable- everyone I know who has developed some kind of regular practice has noticed increased energy, range of mot ion, and overal l well-being.For me though, Yoga has

a much deeper meaning than physical movement and ‘exercise’; it’s a way to practice consciousness, body awareness. It is the science of self-

i n q u i r y, o f a c q u i r i n g knowledge of self.”

Q - I f p e o p l e a r e interested in joining the class, what should they do?A- “Turn up to the classes

which are 9.30 on Sunday mornings at the council offices building.” Anyone in teres ted in

private sessions for their work team, 1on1 sessions, or employees at RDH (where I offer Yoga for the staff) can contact me on: [email protected] or

0438 366 043.”Q-Do people need to

have done yoga before to join the Sunday class?A- “Not at all; I strongly

believe Yoga is for all and I do my very best to accommodate for all levels and stages of physical capacity.”

“Rest easy my friend”Present and past members of the Wagait

Beach Volunteer Emergency Services Unit wish to offer their condolences to Brigitte Carrington and family on the recent passing of our unit officer, friend and colleague Gary Carrington.

Gary arrived at Wagait Beach in 2001 and joined our volunteer unit in 2003, he was then appointed as unit officer in

September 2004.

Gary was an excellent unit officer and never expected any more from his members than what he could achieve himself.

Gary worked tirelessly for the community and was involved in many community events, fund raising programs and working bees.

A couple of programs that come to mind were putting up the playground equipment at the sports ground and procuring the funding for the community centre that combines emergency cyclone shelter, health clinic, NTES office and community meeting room.

Gary has also been involved in all official community functions such as Australia Day, Anzac Day, Territory Day and anything else that needed assistance.

There are a lot of community members who have benefited from Garry’s assistance over the years as he made himself available 24/7 and never complained.

Gary maintained the role of unit officer even over the last couple of years when his health was failing and passed on the responsibility of Unit Officer to his stepson Jason Murphy weeks before his death. “Rest easy my friend.”

The month of June was a special one with plenty of action on the jetty and around Mandorah in general. The jetty was full of life with plenty of queenies and trevally caught on poppers and live bait and FINALLY the tuna have shown up with a few caught and heaps of sightings jumping around the jetty. Unfortunately the terrorist tourists have shown us locals up with none of the locals landing any tuna and the pestering tourist landing em all.At the end of June I went to the Cobourg Peninsula with a few of my mates and we had a ball on the barra catching over 100 in one day and also landing a few decent sized trevallys. I also had a close encounter with an angry buffalo after I missed the shot. A few mates and I got chased up a tree and were stranded there for three hours until someone came and scared the buffalo away. The month of July is setting out to be a big one on all pelagics off the jetty, and hopefully the locals can finally out fish them horrible tourists and land some monster fish.Until next time, rods in hands.James Arratta

What started as a house sitting gig in Wagait Beach became the holiday of a life time and the inspiration for Geoffrey Williams to exhibit what he saw and share it with people in Melbourne. Geoffrey is the is the

Artistic Director of The Sandpit, an exhibition space in St Kilda Melbourne and even though he hasn’t done a photographic exhibition before he was determined to take the plunge when he met photographers in Wagait Beach.“ S u e c a p t u r e s t h e

unique location of Wagait Beach per fect ly. Every photo of hers I looked a t in the supermarket struck a chord with me. The r e was s ome th i ng about each of them that was just beautiful.”“I had the idea of calling

the exhibition ‘Southern Exposure’ because I wanted people down here to have the opportunity to see what Wagait Beach looks and feels like.”Geoffrey bel ieves the

photographers captured the essence of Wagait Beach and the surrounds perfectly for him but when quizzed on how others will relate or enjoy he feels sure the exhibition will be a hit.

‘Grand Budapest Hotel’If you love colour, beauty and a good dose of silliness then you cannot miss seeing the Grand Budapest Hotel.Written and directed by Wes Anderson who is also

famous for the animation film Fantastic Mr Fox and Moonrise Kingdom; Grand Budapest Hotel is similarly micro in its attention to detail and design perfection. Anderson takes you visual journey into the lives of

Gustave H. (Ralph Fiennes), a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel and Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori), the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. It is 1932 and the era of the high class hotel is

at its pinnacle. Set in a fictional part of Europe in a hotel of undeniable beauty and social standing, Gustav H is the king of all lobby boys and therefore reigns supreme. You are taken into the comical world of Gustav as he

trains new lobby boy Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori), revealing the charm and skill of a good lobby boy; which includes charming the guests especially the older ladies. When Madam D (Tilda Swinton) dies she leaves her

most valuable possession to her favourite concierge. This makes her sinister sons (Adrien Brody and Willem Dafoe) furious and they set about getting rid of Gustav. What follows is an odd, very funny and theatrical

journey where the bellboys unite to prove their value in keeping their loot safe and the baddies at bay. The Grand Budapest Hotel gives so much to love and

laugh along with. It is a perfect way to escape into a world of immaculately designed film. Rating:

“It will also be popular with people who think the Northern Territory is all about Uluru, Kings Canyon and Kakadu National Park. While those attractions are

culturally and geographically significant, Wagait Beach and the talented artists who live, create and work there, is the other story and it is one I am very proud to be bringing to Melbourne.”Sue will be sending 55

of her best photographs to the gallery and while she is surprised by all the attention, is quietly excited to share her images of what she feels is normal. “It is what I like and what I

see and my interpretation of where I live. Not everyone can look out their front door and see a storm rolling in and think I might go down to the beach and watch that.”Sue is adamant she is not

a limelight sort of a person but will brave it and go to Melbourne for the opening of the exhibition. “I swing from being really nervous to being quite excited. To me it is a big event.” Sue Chapl in, Hannah

Seward and Ally Richmond have been invited to exhibit their work at the Sandpit in St Kilda, Melbourne from July 9 to 27. Exhibition poster to right:

News reached The Wagaitear that a certain loud, grass-mowing, beer loving local got bogged recently on his way to the Wagait spring. He had to walk home. The resulting advice was don’t take the middle track, stick to the right hand side!!
