Muc-Off is no boring corporate entity. We like to think we’re a little different. It might sound like a cheesy, old cliche, but we tend to think of ourselves as one big, motorcycle obsessed family! After all, back in 1994 Rex and Marilyn Trimnell kicked things off with our perfectly pink cleaner, and we’ve been family owned and operated

ever since. We are all totally focused on making the world’s finest motorcycle care products so your riding time and maintenance is always fun and enjoyable. In case you were wondering what we look like, here are just a few of the family portraits from the guys and girls (and Archie the dog) at Muc-Off HQ.

2012 was one heck of a year for everyone at Muc-Off. We moved offices, developed over 28 new products and met more of our customers out and about than ever! But 2013 promises to be even bigger as we continue to innovate exciting new technologies such as the world’s first high percentage Carnauba wax for motorcycles, and after 2 years development, our Bike Cleaner Concentrate!

Our race support programme is also growing fast! Racing is very much in our hearts and gives us vital feedback from the world’s most demanding riders and mechanics in road and off-road competition. This results in every single one of our products being proven at the highest international level, which is important because our customers are at the centre of everything we do. We only strive to exceed expectations, and listening to riders’ needs is at the core of our R&D program, so please keep the feedback pouring in!

So what’s the story? It all started way back when Right Said Fred were too sexy for their shirts and Rossi wasn’t even riding 500’s yet!

Yep, way back in 1991 Rex and Marilyn Trimnell got things started with X-Lite UK, designing and manufacturing the world’s first twin crown bicycle fork. But that wasn’t enough for Rex. As a man obsessed with detail, he was constantly frustrated at how long it took him to wash his bike. Rex set about understanding surfactant technologies and created a perfectly pink cleaner to care for his kit. That was in 1994 at a time when most cyclists were cleaning their bikes with washing up liquid that contained lots of salt. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that water plus salt equals a lot of corrosion, so it was vital that Rex’s cleaner was eco friendly, highly effective and didn’t cause damage to any delicate finishes or components. To make a long story short, Rex’s formula was the best thing since sliced bread when it came to cleaning a bike, and it wasn’t long before word got out and Muc-Off Bike Cleaner was born. Motorcyclists quickly discovered the pink wonder cleaner and a new market was created!

Fast-forward to 2013 and Muc-Off is now sold around the world and racers from the likes of Buildbase BMW to the Sahara Force India F1 team have come to rely on it! And, in case you haven’t noticed, we do a bit more than our original pink cleaner these days. We are basically obsessed with motorcycles, bicycles and cars, which is why we are very, very driven to make the world’s finest care products to share with our fellow riders.

We’re always cooking up something new, and all our ideas are developed at our in-house, state-of- the-art R&D Centre by Rex’s son, Alex, our MD (mad developer). After he’s cooked up something new and tested it himself, it’s then tested by our in-house boffins and riders to ensure every Muc-Off product is simply the finest of its type in the world. Once we’re happy, the formula will go out to our pro teams for their final feedback. Only then will we put the product into production for the world to enjoy.

Lubricating the chain is an important part of maintaining your motorbike. It helps reduce wear and increases the overall performance and lifetime of the chain. The chain is made up of link plates, rollers and pins and it’s the gaps in-between the rollers and link plates that need to be kept well lubricated.

Muc-Off lubes create a protective film that adheres to each link’s metal contact surface to ensure smooth operation and ultimately less wear. Our lubricants penetrate deep inside these gaps ensuring maximum coverage whilst reducing the pick up of dirt and dust. Our highly developed lube formulas are packed with extreme pressure additives that coat each metal part deep inside the link’s core to provide a phenomenal coefficient friction reduction.

All Muc-Off lubes contain rust inhibitors to protect untreated metal parts as well as oxidation inhibitors to prevent the deterioration of the oil and corrosion of metal parts.

FIG 1: Every surface contains irregularities, even when machined to a mirror like finish. These troughs and peaks are only visible under a microscope, but when two highly-polished surfaces are brought gently together, only some points on the surfaces will make contact.

When a torque force is applied certain surfaces will try and make contact. The purpose of a chain lubricant is to reduce friction and make all your effort easily transfer to a forward motion without wasting energy due to metal friction

FIG 2: However, if a high quality lubricant is used on each surface, the surfaces can be physically separated by hydrodynamic lubrication. At Muc-Off, we go one step further.

Our formulation goal for each lubricant is to create a film that adheres to each metal surface and prevents contact, which then allows the molecular structure to impart both physical and chemical lubrication. This makes it possible to have the lubricant adhere to the surface while easily and evenly lubricating with a microscopic film thickness, preventing metal to metal contact and subsequent wear.
