MUTeaching Fellowship Program

The nationally recognized MU Teaching Fellowship Program, offered by the College of Education andthe MU Partnership for Educational Renewal (MPER), for first-year teachers integrates theory and practice in school settings.

MUTeaching Fellowship Program

Fellows are recent graduates who serve asfull-time classroom teachers in MPER PartnerSchools who have all the rights and responsibilitiesof first-year teachers within their buildings. They receive on-site coaching and support from a mentor teacher.

The course work and on-site mentoring fellowsreceive encourages them to assess their teaching,reflect on their strategies and develop skills thatallow them to continuously learn from practice.

Fellows also enroll in a master’s degree programin the College of Education.

Course work for the program occurs during thesummer before and after the first teaching yearas well as through courses integrated intoclassroom activities during the year.

MUTeaching Fellowship Program

Fellows receive a $13,601 stipend for thefellowship year and monies toward tuition(up to 33 hours) required for a master’s degreeduring the 15 months they are involved in theprogram.

Fellows will be employed by the University of Missouri during this time period.

Fellows pay their own student fees and costsfor textbooks used in their courses.

Mentor teachers are released from full-timeteaching and remain in their school buildingson special assignment to work with two fellows,the University and their schools.

Mentor teachers work directly with the fellowsthrough-out the year, serve as a resource andcoach, and even team-teach with the fellows.

Mentor teachers are involved in professionaldevelopment activities in schools and at MU.They serve as resources to the College ofEducation, working with the Teacher Education Program, and offering professional development for their schools or neighboring schools.

First, the partner school must be able to identify a possiblementor teacher (MT).

The school must also have one normally-occurringteaching vacancy in the building(retirement, transfer, etc.).

The mentor teacher’s time isallocated as follows:

1/3 - mentoring his/her fellows

1/3 - working on school renewal

1/3 - working on MU activities (usually with the Teacher Development Program)

The mentor teacher is thenreleased from his/her classroom to provide the two open teaching vacancies needed for the fellows.

The mentor teacher’s salaryis still paid by the district.

The district will pay $19,060 per fellow to MU. This money will go towards paying his/herstipend and tuition.

The fellows are enrolled ina master’s program in the College of Education.

Their coursework is deliveredas follows...

• 8-10 credit hours the summer prior to the teaching year

• 9-11 credit hours each semester during their teaching year

• 3 credit hours the final summer

At the end of the fellows’second summer, they will have attained a Master in Education (M.Ed.) degree through the Curriculum & Instructiondepartment with an emphasisin Learning & Instruction.
