It was my pleasure recently to install a new alumnichapter in Baton Rouge, LA with 24 chartermembers. Most are graduates of SouthernUniversity and initiates of Beta Zeta, founded in1966. The installation ceremony was the firsttime many of them had been together sincegraduation and it was like a family reunion asmembers recognized each other with delight. They were thrilled to know that their friends fromcollege days are still in town and active in music. Not all are pursuing teaching or performing careers, but all still play an active role in music in theircommunity, including two Mu Phi attorneys who laterperformed on the recital.

There’s something special about being part of a Mu Phi family. In my earlymarried years, I lived in several cities with active Mu Phi alumni chaptersand can remember to this day how, after each move, I was welcomed into anew “family” of Mu Phis. There was no doubt that I had a place where Icould keep music alive in my life and continue my small contributions tosharing and promoting music in each community. I can only imagine howthrilling it must be for Mu Phi families who are actually related. I know howdelighted I was to learn that my niece had chosen Mu Phi Epsilon, so to havea daughter, son, sister, brother, granddaughter or grandson initiate into ourfraternity must be a wonderful feeling.

Whether we are related by blood or by Mu Phi membership, we will alwayshave a special family to support and encourage our musical endeavors. Thisyear we are expanding our “Reaching Out” theme to members workingand/or living all over the world. International Committee co-chairman KeithFord is working to find these members and establish a network of thosewilling to offer their time and help to other members traveling to theircountries for pleasure or study. Wouldn’t it be great to visit England andknow you could contact a Mu Phi to find a recital to attend? Wouldn't it becomforting to study in Japan for a semester and know that a Mu Phi therecould help you find the best place to buy music? There are endlesspossibilities to expand our Mu Phi family network worldwide. Mu PhiEpsilon’s triennial family reunion (AKA our convention) is this comingsummer in Sacramento, CA. If you are a Mu Phi member, this reunion is foryou! We hope many of you are already saving your pennies and markingyour calendars so you can join us to renew Mu Phi friendships andremember our common purposes: recognition of scholarship andmusicianship and development of a bond of friendship among allmembers. See you in Sacramento!

Each year when we draw close to November 13th, I amreminded of our Founders and the legacy they havegiven us that is Mu Phi Epsilon. These two people,Winthrop S. Sterling and Elizabeth Mathias Fuqua, wereindeed very courageous and visionary when they beganour fraternity.

Our Founders taught us how to be people of characterby building upon our values of faith, hope, wisdom, love, and power. And at our own initiation, we made thecommitment to uphold these values that are so near anddear to all Mu Phi members.

Mu Phi Epsilon is 110 years old! Isn’t that absolutelyremarkable? I know for a fact that we all take immensepride in our history. How will we make our 111th year thebest? How will we ensure that the Mu Phi Epsilonlegacy continues for another decade? Will you give ofyour time, talents, and treasures?

As you celebrate and observe Founders Day this year, take a moment to reflect on the past, the present, andthe future. Reflect on the past and the strongfoundation upon which we were built. Live our valuestoday and make certain that we are upholding thestandards of our fraternity and the reasons that Mu PhiEpsilon is important to us. And finally, look to thefuture and think of the possibilities.

On behalf of the entire International Executive Board, Iwish you a very happy Founders Day!

Rosemary Ames International President

The Baton Rouge Alumni chapter was installed on August 28, 2013. International President Rosemary Ames arrivedthe previous day to visit Southern University and its collegiate chapter Beta Zeta, and to present the 2013 FacultyAdvisor of the Year award to Judy James, long-time Beta Zeta faculty advisor.

Throughout history, many famous families have sharedthe same vocation; the Bach clan is a classic musicalexample. Within Mu Phi Epsilon, two generations of thetalented Phelps family pursued musical careers. Motherand five daughters each spoke with interviewer MarcusWyche about how music and Mu Phi run through theirunique family dynamic.

Dramatis personae> Mother Dawn Phelps Neal studied violin at UCLA

and was initiated into Phi Nu in 1959, later developingher own studio. A lifelong active Mu Phi, she is pastpresident of Los Angeles Alumni, served on theFoundation board, and has contributed in dozens ofother ways.

> Oldest daughter Sheila Phelps Johns (WashingtonD.C. Alumni) studied piano and specialized inaccompanying. She earned degrees at USC, where shewas initiated in Mu Nu, and Wichita State University.

> Second daughter Shelley Phelps Johnson took upcello (encouraged to do so due to her “long, lovelyfingers”) and followed her sister’s path in attendingUSC and initiation to Mu Nu.

> Third daughter Stacy Phelps Wetzel (at last, aviolinist like Mom!) attended Juilliard and wasinitiated into Epsilon Psi before going to USC.

> Fourth daughter Cynthia Phelps, attracted to the“darker, richer” sounds of the lower strings, switchedfrom violin to viola as a child. She studied at theUniversity of Michigan and was initiated into Gamma.

> Fifth daughter Melissa Phelps Beckstead, violin, became a special election Mu Phi through Mu Nu/LosAngeles Alumni after studies at New EnglandConservatory and California State-Northridge.

Growing up with Mu Phi EpsilonAll five Phelps daughters spoke of their mother Dawn’sdedication to music and Mu Phi Epsilon. “From the timewe were very young, Mu Phi was always part of ourlives,” Sheila said, “because my mother was president ofthe alumni chapter and always very involved. So therewould be meetings at our home, she would rehearsewith Mu Phis for performances, there were Mu Phifundraising events.”

Cynthia recalled, “My mother has had such a longassociation with Mu Phi and has had so many events ather house, it was just part of our musical [environment].Part of our upbringing was to understand that one usesmusic to serve and to bring something beautiful to lifeand to society, and that it is meant to be shared always.”Of growing up in a Mu Phi household, third-oldest Stacyremarked, “I have positive, wonderful memories ofgroups of women congregating at our house, at variousother houses ... getting dragged to some of these events. The musicians were incredible.”

The high level of musicianship among Fraternitymembers was a recurring impression among all thePhelps women. Dawn cited this as the reason she choseMu Phi Epsilon in college: “When I went to the Mu Phi[rush] meeting, I thought, ‘Here is where the level, standards, interest, and value seem to be head andshoulders above the other sororities.’” Sheila remarkedthat seeing the caliber of musicianship helped thedaughters bridge any generational differences amongmembers. For Stacy and Melissa, this high level alsotranslated into auditioning for the Mu Phi EpsilonInternational Competition.

Family dynamicsThough their mother was (and continues to be) adominant presence in their lives, all the daughtersfondly remarked upon the influence and gentility oftheir father Harold Eldaro Phelps, who died in 1978.(Dawn subsequently married John Neal in 1980; he wasthe Mu Phi Sterling Patron in 2006 and died in 2009.Cynthia said her father was “hugely stabilizing, becausehe was such a good sport. He was really somebody whoenjoyed life. He was so happy to be supportive of thisbevy of girls, and sopatient.” Shelley said herfather was “incrediblysupportive with my momand all of us, taking us tolessons, orchestrarehearsals, concerts. Andhe was just a lot of fun.”Melissa recalled, “Heloved to sit and listen tous play. He had his armsfolded and his legscrossed, and he wasbeaming.”

Among the sisters, Sheilaas the oldest saw herselfin the role of peacemaker, though Shelleyremembers Sheila being abit of a pain as a teenager. Middle child Stacyremembers her oldest sister as “a natural-born leader. Ithink Sheila was very seriously protective of all of usfrom the time we were little, in all kinds of ways.” Stacyin turn was described by Cynthia as the mosttemperamental. Cynthia and youngest sibling Melissawere able to get away with more, though Cynthia wasoften most comfortable “having time to myself.”

All the daughters and their mother agreed they werevery close and remarked that their large family’sharmoniousness, with only minor squabbles, wasperhaps atypical. When queried about the dominantfamily trait, their replies included trust, perseverance, support, and leadership skills learned from Mom. Andthough Sheila described her sisters as very differentfrom one another, she went on to say, “The differencesin our personalities can be bridged because of the thingswe have in common as family.”

Golden Mu PhithreadsThey also agreed that theties of music, fraternity, and family formed thecore of who they are askin and as musicians, from their upbringing topresent day. “You couldtalk about a tapestry ofeach of our lives,” motherDawn concluded. “MuPhi certainly would besome of the goldenthreads through thistapestry that formsprofessional musicians. Ithink a legacy is there, and one well worth

perpetuating. As the ‘girls’ each continue in theirprofessional pursuits, my feelings are of gratitude andhumility that they have sought the higher ideals ofachievement for which Mu Phi Epsilon stands.”

How did you become a Mu Phi? How has yourcareer benefited?

Frances: I was nominated by my first piano teacher,[the late] Ruth Bradley Jones (Iota Alpha). Earlier inmy life she exemplified Mu Phi service by giving me apersonal scholarship for lessons at age five. My fatherdied when I was four, and it would have been difficultfor my mother to afford private lessons. This early startwith an excellent teacher benefited me throughout mycareer.

Diana: I had just won the 1959 National Federation ofMusic Clubs’ Young Artist Award when [the late] RosalieSpeciale (Phi Mu) invited me to join and my dear friendRuth Bradley Jones recommended it. Mu Phi hasalways been an encouragement, and I’ve been activewith Los Angeles Alumni since 1963.

Marcia: Since both my mom and aunt are Mu Phis, itwas a fait accompli that I would join too. It was at a MuPhi meeting that I played one of my first Debussy Trioconcerts. Now when I tour, local Mu Phis often show upat our concerts, sometimes even throw a reception. It’sa great feeling to have friends wherever we go.

What’s your favoritefamily story about beingmusicians together?

Frances: Marcia wasinspired to learn theharp when she heard aperformance of Ravel’sIntroduction andAllegro that I conducted,Diana played in, andMarcia’s future harpteacher Susan McDonaldwas featured.

Marcia: Aunt Franceswas incredibly generous. When I was twelve sheallowed me to play with the university orchestra thenunder her baton, so I could learn to be an orchestralplayer. My mom would sit nearby to help me come in atthe right time. She said to me, “We violins play all thetime, so I never had to count. With the harp, you rarelyplay, so I have to learn how to count all those measuresof rest!”

Diana: My favorite story took twenty-two years towrite: my book Mother Started It. [See review in TheTriangle, Fall 2010, page 21.]

What aspect of your music career gives you the mostsatisfaction?

Frances: My current position as the conductor of a fineprofessional chamber orchestra. I greatly enjoy our highlevel of music making and am pleased to pass on some of themusical wisdom I learned from my own teachers includingNadia Boulanger, Leonard Rose, Rudolf Serkin, and MarcelTabuteau.

Diana: I’ve enjoyed each stage. Music has given me theopportunity to work with some of the greatest musicians ofthe 20th and 21st centuries such as Rudolph Serkin andLeonard Bernstein.

Marcia: I am happyto play anything, butI really love chambermusic. Its technicaland musicalchallenges give me areason to practiceevery day and makeme think. I’m alsothrilled to be anactive commissioner;it’s amazing to bepart of creating newrepertoire.

Any otherthoughts?

Frances: It hasbeen my great honorto receive both thefraternity’s Award ofMerit and its Elizabeth Mathias Award. I hope I have beenworthy of the numerous Mu Phi scholarships and fellowshipsI received, and I have tried to “pay it forward” by assistingmy students any way I could.

Diana: Mu Phi Epsilon exemplifies service. My way ofgiving back has been wide-ranging, including board serviceand fundraising for music organizations. Through serving onthe Debussy Trio Music Foundation board, I helped fulfillMarcia’s dream of inspiring new chamber repertoire for harp. The results have been amazing.

Marcia: I am so fortunate to be a part of a family with a longhistory in music, from my grandparents to my own kids. MuPhi Epsilon has been an ever-present part of my life.

Over the last two years the Fraternityhas been reaching out to memberswe have lost contact with, throughinitiatives to get in touch with alumniand unaffiliated members and bringthem back into local alumnichapters. Many chapters have beensuccessful in gathering old friendsback into their communities. Thisyear we aim to draw in members wholive or study overseas, letting themknow they can continue their linkswith the fraternity through Alliedmembership. But it will take afraternity-wide, grassrootsmovement to make contact with andpersuade these internationals to staywith us in this way.

Once a Mu Phi, Always a Mu PhiMy Allied membership extends backto 2003, the year I moved toEngland. It began with someonewho made a point of talking to meabout maintaining my links with thefraternity after graduation. DorisBraun (Alpha Kappa) was thatsomeone. I was a student in AlphaKappa at University of Missouri-Kansas City, Doris was a leadingmember of the nearby alumnichapter, and we had become good

friends during my collegiate years.Doris was helpful when I wasthinking about what to do and whereto go after my undergraduate studies. Her attitude was “once a Mu Phi,always a Mu Phi,” which for hermeant that when I decided to moveto London, of course I must keep myFraternity links through continuedaffiliation as an Allied member. Shewas persistent. I was sad to leave mycommunity of students and alumnimembers to head for London where Ihad no such community. And it wasDoris, tapping on my shoulder, whoencouraged me to stay in touch andbe loyal, and I’m glad she did.

Tap Them on the ShoulderIf we are going to achieve greaterconnection between Allied members,it will take a lot of such tapping frompeople like Doris. Do you know amember who is about to relocateoverseas (or anywhere that doesn'thave an alumni chapter) for work orstudy? Tap them on the shoulderand talk to them about Alliedmembership.

In my role as an Allied member, Ihave had the pleasure of being acontact point for other Mu Phis who

have come through London on long-term study programs. I have beenanother voice guiding them on howto get the most out of their time inLondon. Allied members can guide, inform, and promote the values ofMu Phi Epsilon wherever they are inthe world, as well as stay connectedto their musical sisters and brothers.

I hope by the time the 2014convention rolls around, manypeople will have tapped theshoulders of those about to fly to newhorizons and reminded them that“once a Mu Phi, always a Mu Phi.”

Steve Larson (1955-2011) was aprofessor of music at the Universityof Oregon and a member of itsInstitute of Cognitive and DecisionSciences. At the time he learned infall 2010 that he had a brain tumor,he had completed the manuscript ofMusical Forces, the final opus of hiscareer as teacher and researcher. Hedid not live to see the book in print. His editor Robert Hatten describes itas “the culmination of twenty-fiveyears of … inquiry into the ways weexperience motion, and hencemeaning, in music.” It asks, andattempts to answer, the questions“Why do we talk about music as if itactually moved?” and “Why doesmusic actually move us?”

Musical Forces is broadly dividedinto parts on theory, evidence, andconclusions, with subsections thatexplicate Larson’s concepts. Forexample, in Part 1 Section 4 “Gravity,Magnetism, and Inertia,” the “lullabycontour” is used as an example ofmelodic gravity. An up-and-then-down melodic arch with descendingcontours has been shown, bycomputer analysis of European folk-song phrases, to be a characteristic ofthe lullaby, the purpose of which is toreduce physiological arousal. Whenhuman infants are soothed bylullabies with such descendingintervals, they may develop melodicexpectations and associatedphysiological responses that continueinto adulthood.

Another concept is melodicmagnetism, the tendency of anunstable note to move to the closeststable pitch, as in “Twinkle, TwinkleLittle Star.” Stable pitches of the C-E-G tonic triad pull the other notestoward them, i.e. F moves one-half

step to E on the words “how Iwonder.” An associated concept ismelodic inertia, the tendency of apattern of musical motion tocontinue in the same fashion, resulting in a melodic sequence orrepeated melodic pattern at adifferent pitch, as in “How I wonderwhat you are” followed by “Up abovethe world so high.”

Other central concepts are metricmagnetism and rhythmic gravity.Larson uses theories from past andpresent to illustrate his premises, such as Rameau’s eighteenth-centurymechanistic explanation of musicalmotion based on his recentacquaintance with Newton’s theoryof gravity. Larson concludes thatfundamental musical forces shapenot only our thinking about musicbut also our thinking in music andhow we experience it. Our sense ofmusical motion is visceral, yet it is ametaphor.

After Larson’s death, the productionstaff of Indiana University Pressworked diligently to prepare themanuscript for publication. One canread between the lines that the bookwas a labor of love for Hatten, whodescribes it as “a fitting memorial to(Larson’s) visionary ideas, his love ofmusic, and his passion for sharingboth.”

An ad in theconvention program will spotlight your chapter and help support theconvention financially. You may submit camera-ready artwork, or sendcopy and we will design for a small extra charge. Contact

for more details and ad rates.
