SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVING YOUR PERFORMANCE GO TO CLASS/ BE ON TIME It has been verified that students who have few absences do better in school than those with many absences. Further, the most distant classrooms can be reached by walking within the 8 minutes allotted for class change. You might try the following: 1. Don’t hang around, GET MOVING!! 2. Socialize before school, lunch time, or after school 3. If absent, get make-up work upon return 4. Sit in front of class if you can ASSIGNED WORK Didn’t turn in your homework? This is a common problem but not too difficult to fix. 1. Pay attention in class and keep your assignments organized 2. Organize your day to include homework time 3. Give your homework your full attention 4. Turn off the radio and TV until you are finished 5. Homework should be neat and complete – Teachers need to read it 6. Ask questions if you don’t understand 7. Call HOMEWORK HOTLINE  for help with Mat h homework: 472-0093 Mon-Thurs 5- 8 p.m. 8. For help – See teachers before school, lunch time, or after school 9. Do your own work – You will not learn by cheating BEHAVIOR All students have a right to learn in an environment that is quiet and free from distractions. Teachers will make rules to insure this occurs. 1. Devote all your attention to the teacher or the class activity 2. Working in class will mean less time on homework and test preparation 3. Following the rules will insure a positive learning environment 4. Give respect and you will get respect CONSTRUCTIVE ATTITUDE Your attitude affects your performance and hence your grade. Try the following: 1. Give the class a fresh start. Actions speak louder than words. 2. Only ask questions that deal with the subject being discussed at the time. 3. BE POSITIVE!! Teachers and peers just want to help. 4. If you think you can, you can 5. Attitude is Everything!! PREPARED FOR CLASS If you are having trouble in this area, you have not decided to be successful yet. You need to have your materials in your possession and ready to go. When you leave for school, ask  yourself these questions: 1. Do I have my textbook? 2. Do I have my notebook? 3. Do I have a pen, pencil, and paper needed for class? 4. Do I have my completed homework? ORGANIZATIONMany students struggle in school solely because they are disorganized. Try the following:1. Create separate folders for every subject2. Clean your backpack regularly3. Complete a daily or weekly calendar of assignments4. Follow correct techniques and class procedures5. Accurately record the day’s assignments for homework

READING IDEASLearning good reading skills can help improve grades. Try the following:1. Before reading, look at how the chapter is outlined – Look at headings, topics, etc.2. As you read, identify & write down the main ideas & key words3. Learn all words that you are not familiar with4. It’s better to skim a chapter than to not read it at all5. At the end of your reading, answer chapter questions – Go back if you don’t know answers

NOTE-TAKINGStudents can improve memory and test scores by simply taking notes on teacher presentations1. Identify a note-taking style that works for you2. Identify main ideas & details for every major topic discussed in class3. Use symbols & abbreviations4. Review notes at home5. Write questions as you listen to the teacher

COMPLETING

ASSIGNMENTS

If students would simply complete all assignments, grades would be noticeably improved.1. Use a dictionary & thesaurus2. Attempt to complete every question or problem3. Get help from a tutor4. Don’t procrastinate5. Review all sample questions or problems

EXAMSMany students fail because they don’t know how to study for exams. A good test-taker can

improve scores on any test. Try the following:1. Make all materials available for review2. Divide your study time into manageable chunks3. Ask teachers about the test format and questions4. Take advantage of all review sessions5. Answer all questions on every test – Write something down6. Get a good sleep the night before an exam7. For test anxiety – Learn relaxation techniques8. Read all answers before selecting – Many clues are in the possible answers9. After you finish, go back and review your answers – Make any corrections if needed10. On essay questions – The more you write, the better it is
