Patrol boats and high-speed craft have to perform a wide range of duties. They take on the key role of military deter-

rence and defense, monitor compliance with the law, carry out fishery protection duties and take part in search and

rescue operations. Versatility and speed are the characteristics of these small craft and they place special demands

on their propulsion systems.

But they are demands that MTU systems are equal to. Powerful but light and compact, our diesel engines cover

Modern navies are required to cover a wide range of

duties. As universally deployable craft, corvettes and fri-

gates play a dominant role within that brief.

Their duties include not only protection, defense and

peacekeeping, they also have to retain supreme control

under immediate threat from submarines, aircraft and

surface vessels.

fore two criteria that both craft and power units must

Mine countermeasure vessels operate under conditions that dictate absolute imperatives – for the engines as

well as the craft themselves. As well as general characteristics such as compactness or outstanding power-

to-weight ratios, highly specialized features such as minimal underwater sound emission, high shock resis-

tance and low magnetic signatures are also demanded. The last of those in particular is MTU’s special

domain. When it comes to MCMVs we have been involved in the development of propulsion systems with

low magnetic signatures from the outset. The MTU MRK method makes it possible to reduce to a mini-

mum the magnetism that emanates from ferromagnetic components and simultaneously achieves permanent

magnetic stability. We have installations that allow us to treat and test individual components as well as

complete propulsion systems. And one of the most convincing features of MRK is that it can be applied to

all series production engines. Cost reductions and benefits for logistics and service are the result.

Submarines are an indispensable part of almost

any fleet. The technical requirements demanded

of submarine engines are extremely exacting –

and only a few manufacturers are capable of

meeting them. With our extensive experience in

development and design, which dates back to

the beginning of the 20th century, we are the

world leaders in this field. MTU engines such as

the Series 396 SE for diesel-electric submarine

systems are not only powerful, they are also light-

weight and compact.

Their strength is in their absolute reliability

even under extreme intake and exhaust back-

pressure conditions when operating at snorkel

depth. If required, our MRK process can also be

applied to submarine engines. This reduces the

magnetic signature to a minimum. The special

shock-resistance and low-noise characteris-

tics are examples of our substantial contribution,

in partnership with designers, shipbuilders and

operators to the advancement of submarine

The impressive capabilities of the US Marine Corps’ Expeditionary Fighting Vehicles (EFVs) are literally overwhelming.

The duty profiles of destroyers, frigates and corvet-

tes demand versatile and economical propulsion

systems. Combined diesel engine and gas turbine

systems have consequently become the preferred

option for such craft. The high complexity of the

systems necessitates a system coordinator with

responsibility for the mechanical, electronic and

logistical interfaces who can also supply systems

from a single source. As a contractor for complete

propulsion systems, we can configure the opti-

mum system for your particular requirements,

be that CODAD, CODAG, CODOG or a combined

system with diesel-electrical components.

All components – not just the engines, gas turbi-

nes and onboard power generators – are from the

same source and are integrated by us into a

harmonious overall system.

All MTU systems can drive various kinds of propulsors, e.g. FPP, CPP, Waterjets, Voith-Schneider or Schottel drives.

CODAG (Combined Diesel And Gas Turbine) with controllable propeller

(CPP)

Principle: The two diesel engines and a gas turbine drive the two propellers via two main

gearboxes and a multi-input gearbox. If only one diesel engine or the gas turbine is running,

both propellers are supplied evenly with power via the multi-input gearbox. If both diesels are

operating, that gearbox can be disengaged. By using a two-speed gearbox, one diesel engine

can bring the vessel up to cruising speed.

CODOG (Combined Diesel Or Gas Turbine) with CPP

Principle: Two diesel engines and two gas turbines operate in alternation and drive two

controllable propellers via two main gearboxes. The gas turbines are connected via

self-synchronizing clutches. The diesel engines propel the ship at cruising speed; the

two gas turbines are used to bring it up to maximum speed.

CODAD (Combined Diesel And Diesel) with CPP

Principle: Four diesel engines operate in pairs and drive two controllable propeller

systems via two main gearboxes. In normal operating conditions, one diesel drives each shaft.

For maximum speed, the other two diesels are brought in.

CODLAG (Combined Diesel Electric And Gas Turbine)

CODLOG (Combined Diesel Electric Or Gas Turbine)

Principle: Diesel engines drive generators which produce electric power for two electric

propulsion motors. A gas turbine drives two propeller shafts with CPP via a gearbox –

either alone or in combination. The diesel-electric propulsion units ensure cruising speed

of the vessel, whilst maximum speed is reached when the vessel’s propulsion plant runs

in combined mode, i.e. diesel-electric plus gas turbine.

12V 396 Genset

We not only provide propulsion units for all types of craft – we also deliver heat and light, safety

and comfort onboard ship. The generation of electricity for general services and / or as emer-

gency backup on ships is a job that requires exceptionally high-performance, highly durable and

absolutely reliable diesel gensets.

Our solutions also offer convincing qualities such as compactness, excellent power-to-weight

ratios and low exhaust and sound emissions.

MTU can provide a broad variety of different, tailor-made systems to achieve high shock

resistance and best possible sound attenuation for structure-born as well as airborne noise.

As system providers, we also supply complete onboard power generation systems.

Automatic power generation control – which can be integrated in the ship’s automation

system if required – monitors and controls all power-generation units on board.

RCS-5 Propulsion Remote Control System

The integrated propulsion control system automatically

controls the propulsion units according to the settings.

As a result, vessel performance and handling are optimi-

zed.

MCS-5 Type 2 Monitoring and Control System

The integrated monitoring, alarm and control system

rapidly and precisely records and processes measured

data from all areas of the ship via optimized interfaces.

That not only improves the efficiency of processes,

most importantly it increases safety on board.

Because of its open-system structure, MCS-5 can be com-

bined with third-party systems (e.g. electric power manage-

ment systems, fire detecting and alarm systems and inter-

faces to navigation and integrated bridge systems etc.).

The MTU visualization software allows enormous volumes

of data to be efficiently processed and simultaneously

displayed on the color screen.

Assyst

This software, which is used specifically on the Series

595, 1163, 4000 and 8000 engines, communicates with

the engine by collecting, storing, analyzing and display-

ing engine data. By comparing readings with stored refe-

rence data, and by the use of graphical trend display

functions, ASSYST can quickly establish whether all engi-

ne data is as it should be or whether servicing or repairs

are necessary.

As a leading manufacturer of diesel engines, we also develop and produce our

own ship automation systems. They monitor and control the propulsion system
