Europe as in the subcontinent Europe reaches from the Urals to the Atlantic Ocean. Europe shares a large continent with Asia (Eurasia). 29% of Eurasia is European territory. Europe – in total 700 m people – stretches across 3800 km North to South and 6000 km East to West from the Ural Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean (European Mainland). For comparison: the USA measure 2500 km North to South and 4500 km East to West with a population of approximately 309 m people. The gross do- mestic product in Europe (EU 27 countries plus non-EU coun- tries) was 17.6 bn US Dollars in 2007. Approximately 3 bn US Dollars were produced in Ger- many. That is the equivalent of 17%, nearly a fifth of the total. In the 27 EU member states the- re are 23 official languages. Is English or German the predomi- nant language in Europe? Europe is the home of nearly 100 million people whose first language is German. 61 million people are English native speakers and another 59 million French and 58 Italian (2003). How easy it seems in compari- son for the Americans. In over 50 states the language that eve- rybody speaks is English. Compared to the USA the 27 EU states rank no. 1 in terms of economic performance (GDP 2007). China makes fourth place after the USA and Japan. Euro- pean economy is six times big- ger than that of China (2005/2007) and about 15-20% bigger than that of the Ameri- cans as measured by the GDP. The MTI Europe series Europe has the third largest population in the world after China and India

At least this is true when meas-uring the number of inhabitants. But what exactly do we mean when we speak of Europe? The European Union? The Euro-zone or the geographical Euro-pe? Total confusion. What was your first association when you read Europe? “Europe is not a place, it is an idea“… …this was said by Bernard-Henry Levy, a French philoso-pher born in 1948. The challenge for service pro-viders… …is being able to offer you, our customers and prospective cli-ents, a tailor-made range of ser-vices in all 46 European states. This also means being able to cover 23 official languages and sometimes even two or three languages per country. Just think of Switzerland or Belgium or Ex-Yugoslavia. 32 colleagues with the Machwürth Team are at your disposal locally covering work in their native language plus speaking at least one other language. In many cases our consultants and trainers are pro-ficient in 2, 4 or more languages on a level of native speakers. A team of 9 people supports MTI Europe in steering all European activities.

This includes customer care mostly from our base in Ger-many as well as local offices across Europe. In cooperation with the consultant teams they acquire, consult, design and manage projects, regardless of whether it is a local training, coaching, Pan European roll-out of a change process or the facili-tation of a strategy workshop or a management conference. True to the motto: a partner for Europe with local resources and an understanding of local cul-ture. Don’t you think it is about time to get to know more about Europe little by little? In 2010 we will feature articles presenting our European colleagues and their countries. This will include in-sights into culture, people and background on each of the states or regions.

Today we would like to kick our series off with a visual and geo-graphical “tour“ of Europe. Follow this link and “assign“ the more than 40 European countries their place on the map. In order to reward you for your efforts we have created a little competition around this. The three highest-ranking play-ers who have solved the puzzle in the less amount of time, will win a FREE consultant day in a European location of your choice. To participate, please send an email to [email protected] or hit the reply button to this newsletter mail and tell us your score and time needed which will be shown once you com-plete the puzzle. Have fun in puzzling over Europe. MTI
