Retired School Employees SPRING 2017 - District XI Newsletter Meeting second Wednesday of the month at 8:30 a.m. at Hollenstein Career and Technology Center, unless otherwise noted 2016-2017 Officers: Deborah Parrish, Second Vice President; Beth McCoy, Treasurer; Linda Currier, Secretary; Sandra Sellers, First Vice President; Burt Weems, President. Adrianne Russell, Historian; Barbara Hawthorn, Parlimentarian; not shown. For over five years, Diane Winans has volunteered to collect and distribute about 500 books for our districts’ preschool children at the Weldon Hafley Development Center. Students in bilingual classes receive a book in English and a book in Spanish. The students read their books then draw pictures as thank you notes. Dr. Jim Chadwell, Superintendent of Eagle Mountain- Saginaw Independent School District, presented information on the challenges facing the district, legislative issues, and future growth, and the many accomplishments of students and the district as a whole.

October 12, 2016 Breakfast Meeting and Road Trip to the Fort Worth Stockyards

After breakfast at the Hollenstein

Center, members took a road trip to the Fort Worth Stockyards. They enjoyed a fascinating guided historical walking tour of the famous landmark. The tour included viewing former animals pens repurposed into retail shops and restaurants and a Texas Longhorn cattle drive down Exchange Avenue. They visited the Fort Worth Coliseum, the Livestock Exchange Building, and finished with lunch at Riscky’s Barbeque.

Luck Lunch and Scholarship Auction Meeting at the Hollenstein Center

Boswell graduate Rick Spindor volunteered to call the auction to raise money for the scholarship fund. Members made the auction a huge success by raising about $1,100 toward the cause. The three $500 scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors who are studying to be educators.

January 11, 2017 Breakfast Meeting at the Hollenstein Center

Thanks to Robbi Cleveland, Sales and Marketing Representative of Brookdale Ridgmar Independent Living, for providing breakfast to our members.

Kay Lotz, Yearbook/ Technology/Email Chairperson, and Sandy Flowers, Ambassador for Senior Education Northbrook Center - Northwest Campus for Tarrant County College.

Sandy informed the group about Tarrant County College District’s senior programs which include

exercise classes, visual and performing arts classes, world language classes, and computer classes among the many offered at a one-time low cost for as many classes as a senior wants to take.

James Schiele, Chief Financial Officer of Eagle Mountain- Saginaw ISD, enlightened us about growth in the

district, issues with voucher systems and charter schools, and legislative proposals and problems concerning students, teachers, and our district.

JoyLynn Schnell, Co-chair of Health Care and Safety, presented “Good Health is

Priceless.”

February 8, 2017 Breakfast Meeting at the Hollenstein Center

JoyLynn Schnell, Co-Chair of the Health Care and Safety Committee, stressed the importance of exercise for seniors. She demonstrated how to “Rise, Stabilize, Mobilize” after sitting. Many members offered information about their exercise programs and activities to support healthy living. Members received and discussed a handout on “TRTA State Healthcare Committee February Healthcare Tips.”

Gary McKinney, fellow educator at Boswell, was remembered with a poem.

Special thanks to Kay Lotz and Linda Currier for going above and beyond to help this year’s slate of officers.
