BOWLED OVER February 2020

MOUNT WAVERLEY BOWLS CLUB -

CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS 2020

On a very warm January 24th evening the Club Singles

Championships were played in front of a crowd of just

over 100 people.

David Rae Editorial

Bang-wham – yes, it’s Champion Sluggett!! In typical

fashion Richard played a bold strike with his last bowl

when needing two shots to win. He took out Bernie

Brennan’s carefully drawn second shot to hold three

shots – and take the Championship after a tightly fought

contest.

This was a game which got better as it went on. It started

off slowly with single shots leading to even scores at 5-

all and 7 – all.

The middle game saw Bernie draw slowly ahead and

eventually he held a seven-shot lead at 17-10.

Then things became tense as Richard slowly but surely

cut down the lead and we entered the end phase with

level scores at 21-all, 22-all and 23-all.

The last end, with a three-quarter length jack, produced a

tight head although Bernie’s first three bowls were short

of the kitty allowing Richard to hold game. However,

Bernie then drew the second shot, but the bowl was

vulnerable sticking out to the side of the head.

Richard does not hesitate in these situations and with a

fully weighted shot pushed his own front bowl onto

Bernie’s bowl taking it out to leave him holding game.

On rink 10 this was not Jill Anderson’s day. When

Lindsay overcomes her “devils” she is a difficult player

to beat. This was one of those days and Jill was unable to

match her earlier good form of the semi-final. Lindsay

steadily pulled way and, in the end, won comfortably 25

– 10.

Thanks to Sarina Bonnici and Ken Chapman for marking

and Jim Fary for updating the scoreboards.

A good crowd turned out on a beautiful Friday afternoon

– 24 January - to see the two games played in almost

ideal conditions, warm sunshine and very little wind. The

centre green played beautifully.

Responsible Serving of Alcohol If you serve behind our bar or are thinking of joining the

bar roster in the future, this note is for you.

It is mandatory that anyone serving or selling alcohol

must complete a “Responsible Serving of Alcohol”

Course. The club has run one of these coursed

previously, but members must update the certificate

every three years.

The RSA program covers a range of topics including:

" problems associated with excessive consumption

" alcohol and the law

" the question of who is responsible for RSA

" facts about alcohol

" improving the atmosphere of your premises

" handling difficult customers.

The Alcohol & Drug Foundation through its Good Sports

program (www.goodsports.com.au) enables the club to

host the course at their club rooms.

The Club expects bar staff to attend this session if

possible, otherwise they will need to attend a session

elsewhere to complete the course.

Attendees will have the cost of the course covered by the
