Mystery, Babylon The Great

Rev 18:24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

In her was found the blood. • Every person is either IN HER (i.e.- Babylon the great) or IN HIM (i.e.- Christ)

(1 John 5:19-20)

1 John 5:19-20 19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

• Those IN HIM are joined unto THE LORD (1 Cor 6:17), in RIGHTEOUSNESS and collectively called the CHURCH, the SAVED, or BELIEVERS

2 Cor 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.


• Those IN HER are joined to an HARLOT (1 Cor 6:16), in WICKEDNESS and collectively called the WORLD, the LOST, or UNBELIEVERS

Zec 5:7-8 7 And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah.8 And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof.

• This means that the broadest application of Babylon the great is that she is THE WORLD, the collective body of all LOST people cf. (v.24; 16:1,6)

• The blood of prophets and saints is found IN HER because she not only shed their blood (19:2) but DRANK their blood (17:6)

Rev 17:6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.

• The PROPHETS and SAINTS are further defined as HIS SERVANTS (19:2)

Rev 19:2 For true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.

• ALL THAT WERE SLAIN UPON THE EARTH means that Babylon the great is responsible for the death of EVERY believer slain for his faith

• She has not personally and directly killed every one of them because she has often used one of her “daughters” to do the dirty work cf. (Matt 14:6-8)

• The Lord brings a similar indictment against the scribes and Pharisees

Matt 23:35-36 35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. 36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

Luke 11:50-51 50 That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;51 From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.


• How could the scribes and Pharisees of Jesus’ day be guilty of the blood of Abel when Cain was the one who killed him (Gen 4:8) and the scribes and Pharisees didn’t exist at that time?

• How could they be guilty of the blood of Zacharias when king Joash was the one who had him killed (2 Chr 24:20-22) and they didn’t exist at that time either?

• Since Babylon the great is responsible for the blood of all that were slain upon the earth, it is also guilty of the blood of Abel and Zacharias

• How could Babylon the great and the scribes and Pharisees both be guilty of the same thing?

• If Babylon the great is Rome (and it is) how can she be guilty of the blood of all the saints slain on the earth when she was founded in 753 BC?

• The answer to these questions is found in the the law of IMPUTATION, a legal and generational concept, which states that all those IN another person (spiritually or seminally) are attributed with the acts and resulting charge(s) (favorable or unfavorable) of the one they are in as if they did the acts themselves


• The law of imputation is seen in Solomon’s denouncement of Joab and HIS SEED

1 Kin 2:31-33 31 And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said, and fall upon him, and bury him; that thou mayest take away the innocent blood, which Joab shed, from me, and from the house of my father. 32 And the LORD shall return his blood upon his own head, who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing thereof, to wit, Abner the son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah. 33 Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there be peace for ever from the LORD.

• The law of imputation is illustrated by the fact Levi was attributed with paying tithes to Melchizedek through his father Abraham because he was IN (seminally) Abraham at the time

Heb 7:9-10 9 And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham. 10 For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.


• The most notable example of the law of imputation is in Romans 5 • SIN and DEATH are imputed to the entire human race through Adam because,

even though we did not personally eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, we were all IN (seminally) Adam when he did

• RIGHTEOUSNESS and ETERNAL LIFE are imputed to born again Christians through Jesus Christ because, even though we did not personally pay the penalty for our sins, we are all IN (spiritually) Christ by faith and he did

Rom 5:12,18-19 12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. 19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

1 Cor 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.


• The scribes, Pharisees, and lawyers of Jesus’ day were guilty of the blood of Abel, Zacharias, and all the prophets through IMPUTATION- they were part of this GENERATION (Matt 23:36; Luke 11:50-51)

• GENERATION= “production; the people of the same period, or living at the same time; a single succession in natural descent; a series of children or descendants from the same stock; a race; a family; progeny; offspring”

• As part of this GENERATION, they were the spiritual CHILDREN of those who killed the prophets; and the CHILDREN OF HELL (Matt 23:15,31)

• Being spiritual CHILDREN they were part of a spiritual FAMILY with a mother and father

This Wicked GENERATION= SEED; CHILDREN

Children of THE WICKED ONE (Matt 13:38) Children of WICKEDNESS (1 Chr 17:9)

Children of THE DEVIL (1 John 3:10) Children of THIS WORLD (Luke 16:8; 20:34)

Children of BELIAL (Deu 13:13) Children of BABYLON THE GREAT

Children of their FATHER (John 8:44) Children of their MOTHER (Rev 17:5)


• FAMILY= “the collective body of persons who live in one house under one head; a household, including parents (a father and a mother) and children; those who descend from a common progenitor; a tribe or race; kindred; a collection or union of nations or states”

• Their MOTHER is BABYLON THE GREAT and their FATHER is THE DEVIL

Rev 17:5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

• As spiritual CHILDREN, they were also the spiritual SEED of their parents, so they were IN HER (i.e.- Babylon the great) (v.24) from the very beginning


• There are just two GENERATIONS- THIS GENERATION, which is defined as a generation of VIPERS (among other things), and the CHOSEN generation

Matt 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

1 Pet 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

• There are just two FAMILIES- the family of the devil and the family of God • In the family of the devil, Satan is the father (John 8:44), Babylon the great is the

mother (17:5), and lost sinners are the children • In the family of God, God is the Father, the new Jerusalem is the mother, and the

saints are the children

Rom 1:7 To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.


Gal 4:26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

Matt 13:38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;

Luke 16:8 And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.

1 John 3:10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

• FAMILIES= the same word as KINDRED • Gendering is permitted only among those of the same KIND; those of different

KINDS are not to be unequally yoked together


Lev 19:19 Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.

Deu 22:10 Thou shalt not plow with an ox and an ass together

2 Cor 6:14-18 14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

• We are to COME OUT from among THEM (i.e.- unbelievers) and God’s people are to COME OUT of BABYLON THE GREAT (v.4)


• Just as the Lord avenged the blood of his servants at the hand of Jezebel (1 Kin 18:4; 2 Kin 9:7,10,35-37) so he will avenge the blood of all his servants at the hands of Babylon the great (19:2) cf. (Jer 51:49)

• Babylon the great is a CITY-STATE= she is the city of ROME (17:18); VATICAN CITY

• Babylon the great is a RELIGIOUS SYSTEM with global political and commercial power= she is what we know today as the ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH and will be the one world religion and political power behind the throne in the first half of the Tribulation

• Babylon the great is the WORLD SYSTEM= she is called BABYLON THE GREAT for two reasons: (1) because the post-Flood ungodly world system began under Nimrod at BABEL (Gen 10:8-10) and spread and spawned throughout the earth thereafter; and (2) because BABYLON represents THE WORLD, particularly in its complete apostasy and REBELLION against God

Note: EGYPT is also a type of the WORLD, particularly in its OPPOSITION and OPPRESSION of God’s people

• Babylon the great is the MOTHER of HARLOTS (17:5) and of Satan’s HOUSE (i.e.- family) (Mark 3:25-26)
