Abstract Expressionism was the dominant style inmid-century American art, a movement that wasmost closely associated with male artists. But therewere dozens of women developing their own styleswithin the idiom. In this course, we will rediscoversome of these talented, resilient people, their workand how it related to abstract expressionistconcepts. Their stories will be told against thebackdrop of the artistic communities in SanFrancisco and New York. We will also look at somewho lived in Paris. The place of AbstractExpressionism within American cultural history willalso be discussed. FOUR WEEKS

Cynthia F. Weisfield is an art historian with a degreefrom the University of Chicago. She is a freelancewriter whose articles about art and food appearregularly in multiple local and national publications.Cynthia has written a book (as yet unpublished)about the one of the last living women abstractexpressionist painters: "Sonia Gechtoff:Remembrances of a Life in Art".
