Message From The 2013 Event ChairsThe journey to end cancer starts with a single step. Or perhaps thousands of steps over the next 24 hours! We welcome you to Relay for Life Mt Lebanon. We are glad you are part of our event. The objectives for the relay are to raise money for cancer research and cancer patients, to spread cancer awareness and to unite a community in the fight against cancer, remembering those lost, and celebrat-ing the survivors.

Relay for Life has been the signature event for the American Cancer Society since 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society fight the nation’s biggest health concern – cancer. A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Since those first steps, the Relay For Life movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising more than $4 billion to fight cancer.

Relay for Life came to Mt. Lebanon 4 years ago. We had no idea what to expect that first year. We were hoping for 20 teams and to raise $20, 000. However in true Mt. Lebanon style, we had 77 teams and raised $159,000. The next 2 years’ events were also great success stories, increasing dollars raised as well as participants each year. We are excited for this 4th Mt. Lebanon Relay!

We have an event-filled 24-hours planned on the main stage as well as around the track. The opening ceremony at noon will include the presentation of colors, the High School marching band, vocal per-formances and short welcoming remarks. The Luminaria Ceremony begins at sundown. This powerful ceremony provides an opportunity for people to work through grief and find hope. Walkers continue throughout the night, signifying that cancer never sleeps. Closing ceremonies will be held at 9am on Sunday. Please refer to the full schedule of events in this program.

An event of this magnitude could not be done without the hands, sweat and tears of many. We thank our dedicated steering committee, the countless volunteers and participants. We acknowledge and thank the incredible partnerships we have formed with the municipality and the school district. Without this support, we would not be here today. We humbly thank all those who are a part of this community event.

Sincerely,

Kathy Noorbakhsh & Sue WilcherRelay For Life of Mt. Lebanon 2013 Event Co-Chairs

The Relay For Life StoryOne person can make a difference. Nowhere is that more evident than with the story of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, which began in Tacoma, Washington. In the mid-1980s, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma colorectal surgeon, wanted to enhance the income of his local American Cancer Society of-fice and to show support for all of his patients who had battled cancer. He decided to personally raise money for the fight by doing something he enjoyed – running marathons.

In May 1985, Dr. Klatt spent a grueling 24 hours circling the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. He ran for more than 83 miles. That first year, nearly 300 of Dr. Klatt’s friends, family, and patients watched as he ran and walked the course. Throughout the night, friends donated $25 to run or walk with Dr. Klatt for 30 minutes. His efforts raised $27,000 to fight cancer.

While circling the track those 24 hours, Dr. Klatt thought about how others could take part in his mission to fight cancer. He envisioned a 24-hour team relay event that could raise more money to fight cancer. Over the next few months, he pulled together a small committee to plan the first team relay event, known as the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer.

In 1986, with the help of Pat Flynn – now known as the “Mother of Relay” – 19 teams took part in the first team Relay event on the track at the historic Stadium Bowl and raised $33,000. An indescribable spirit prevailed at the track and in the tents that dotted the infield.

About Our Mt. Lebanon Relay...In the fall of 2009, the ACS approached Heather Knuth to explore the possibility of having a mini Relay For Life in Mt. Lebanon. Heather, now known as one of the grandmothers of Relay, agreed to explore the possibility. A mini Relay is held at one school and students try their hand at fundraising while becoming aware of a disease that affects so many. Each direction we turned in Mt. Lebanon, people shared their reasons to Relay and before we knew it Mt. Lebanon was busy with the groundwork and fundraising for the full scale, all inclusive Relay For Life, 2010. The ACS helped us set goals; 20 teams and raise $20,000. That first year we ended up with 78 teams registered, 802 participants and $159,921.14 raised for cancer research, education and support services. Over 75 people volunteered countless hours to make this happen. The school district and the municipality became partners in this fight. That was just the beginning....

Security & Safety PoliciesAt the request of the Mt. Lebanon Police Department and the Relay for Life Committee, an 11:00 PM curfew will be enforced during Relay for all participants, including youth in high school, regardless of age. For the safety of our participants, we will be issuing wristbands to ALL of our properly REGISTERED PARTICIPANTS that will be at the Relay anytime between the hours of 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM. (Only teams raising $500 or more by May 23rd will be allowed to stay at the event between mid-night and 6:00 a.m.) This includes those on adult or youth teams, those on mixed adult/youth teams, and any official Youth Ambassador.

All participants must be registered in advance so we can make sure your team is given enough wrist-bands. The deadline for registering for wristbands was MAY 23rd. This will guarantee that your team participants have a wristband onsite and will be properly registered to participate overnight between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM. There will be a preliminary wristband check at 11:00 PM on Saturday and follow-up spot checks during the overnight time and early morning hours. Any participants without a wristband will not be permitted to stay overnight and will be asked to leave the track area at 11:00 PM. For youth under the age of 18, we will need to contact your emergency contacts if you are asked to leave at 11:00 PM. All participants can resume activity after 6:00 AM when the curfew expires.

All youth (under the age of 18) MUST have chaperones (25 or older – 1 for every 5 people under age 18). Chaperones should be at Relay for the entire 24-hour period and within eye/ear-shot of the team tent/youth. You must complete the separate youth agreement, chaperone forms, and emergency contact forms. Contact the Team Development Chairs or Event Co-Chairs with questions. There will be periodic checks for chaperones between 11pm and 6am. If chaperones cannot be found, youth participants will be asked to wait in the large tent until chaperones are found. If chaperones cannot be reached, com-mittee will reach out to emergency contacts to come to Relay to pick-up un-chaperoned youth.

Quiet Time: Music, performances, and loud noise not permitted from 11:00 PM and 7:00 AM.

The Turf: Food/Beverages, etc.: food and beverages (other than water) will NOT be permitted on the track or field/turf this year. We ask that all such food/beverages be consumed on the asphalt areas out-side the fence/track. No sand-bags, spikes, tape or other materials may be used to secure anything to the turf/track. The only suitable items for securing tents will be water jugs or “weights”.

Inclement Weather: Relay 2013 will run rain or shine! The Committee will monitor all weather issues during Relay Weekend. Committee will announce when the track/stadium must be cleared due to light-ning and other weather issues. If the track is cleared due to weather, all participants are to seek shelter in their vehicles until the track/stadium is re-opened. There is no rain-date for this event.

How is the American Cancer Society finding cures today?

• The American Cancer Society is the largest private, not-for-profit source of funding for cancer research in the US.

• We fund groundbreaking research that helps...better understand cancer causes; determine how best to prevent cancer; and discover new ways to detect and treat cancer.

• Since 1946, the American Cancer Society has invested about $3.6 billion in cancer research.

• The Society’s program is distinguished by its funding of research in all body sites and types of cancer, with the largest allocations going toward cancers causing the greatest harm: breast, colon and lung. • 44 American Cancer Society researchers have gone on to win the Nobel Prize,

the highest accolade of scientific achievement.

• Our research dollars jump start careers. The Society seeks to identify the best and the brightest in order to launch their careers at a formative stage when this type of funding is scarce. Many of those who obtain future funding are quick to say: “I got my first grant from the American Cancer Society.”

• Our research dollars bring targeted research to specific populations. Since 1999, the Society has directed up to 10 percent of its research funding to help eliminate disparities in health care for poor and underserved populations.

• A highly-competitive peer review process is used to determine what programs receive Society funding. Included in these panels are stakeholders — individuals who help

ensure cancer relevance and patient impact is always considered.

• There are 40 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers* in the country, 30 of which are headed by scientists who received Society funding at an early stage in their careers. Five centers are located in Ohio and Pennsylvania including: • Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA • Case Comprehensive Cancer Center at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH • Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, PA • The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute at The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH • University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, Pittsburgh, PA

• All communities directly benefit from the substantial investment the Society has made in its research and training program. No matter where we live, we all gain from the research that increases our understanding of cancer and transforms how we prevent, detect, and treat cancer.

*refers to a cancer center which has demonstrated depth and breadth of research activities in each of the three major areas: laboratory, population sciences or clinical research, with a substantial transdisciplinary research bridge among these areas.

The American Cancer Society was involved in many of the major cancer research breakthroughs of the century, including:

• discovering BRCA1, a gene for inherited susceptibility to breast cancer

• establishing the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer

• Proving the safety and effectiveness of mammograms for the early detection of breast cancer

• demonstrating the effectiveness of the Pap smear in detecting cervical cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage

• Increasing the survival rate of children with leukemia

• discovering velcade, a successful treatment for multiple myeloma

• developing the prostate specific antigen test (PSA) for the early detection of prostate cancer

• discovering genes for inherited forms of breast and colon cancer

• Affirming that one-third of all cancer deaths can be prevented through healthy eating and physical activity

• Increasing the survival rate of patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia through the use of Gleevec

For a complete timeline of the Society’s research milestones, go to cancer.org/research

All Society-funded research is dependent on donor support. Scientists with Society grants work hard at finding cancer cures because they know their funding is made possible

through hundreds and thousands of small and generous gifts. By providing your support, you can help with a gift of time

or money that may unlock answers to cancer prevention or a more effective cancer treatment. Participate in or contribute

to one of many Society events such as Relay For life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

Research today for a cancer-free tomorrow. You can join the movement for funding cures by enrolling in the Cancer

Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). The American Cancer Society is inviting men

and women between the ages of 30 and 65 years who have no personal

history of cancer to join this historic research study. The ultimate goal is to

enroll 500,000 adults from various racial/ethnic backgrounds from across the

United States By joining CPS-3, you can help us understand how to prevent

cancer, which will save lives and give people more of their most precious

resource: time. More time with their families and friends, more memories,

more celebrations . . . and more birthdays. For more information about

CPS-3 and the selected enrollment locations, please e-mail [email protected]

or call toll-free 1-888-604-5888.

Luminaria CeremonyRelay For Life participants and donors remember loved ones lost to cancer and honor those battling the disease by dedicating luminaria to be displayed during the luminaria ceremony.

Luminaria, paper bags containing votive candles, are transformed and illuminated after dark at our Mt. Lebanon Relay For Life. Each luminaria is personalized with a name, photo, message and/or drawing in memory or honor of a friend or loved one who has been affected by cancer. Luminaria can also be dedicated in support of a Relay participant. Each luminaria candle represents a person. They are our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends, coworkers, and so many others.

The 2013 Luminaria Ceremony will begin promptly after sun-down (once it’s dark). Everyone is asked to stop walking the track at this time, and to be seated QUIETLY in the bleachers at 9pm (tenta-tively). There are many activities associated with this moving ceremony, which is why we need the track to be cleared. This is typical of most Relay For Life events.

A special THANK YOU to:

- Students of Howe, Jefferson and Mellon, the Mt. Lebanon Cheerleaders, and Mr. Hessler’s art classes for decorating Luminaria Bags.- Elizabeth Harris for her contributions with her original music; - Mt. Lebanon Dance Team for their thoughtful presentation; - Steve Feller for sharing his personal story; - Rollier’s Hardware for their donation of our luminaria candles; and - Rullo Construction for their donation of the sand used in our luminaria bags. - Restoration Hardware in The Galleria for their donation of battery-operated candles.

Remember loved ones lost to cancer and honor those battling the disease by dedicating a luminaria bag.

We come together every year at our Relay For Life event and celebrate those individuals who are winning the fight. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest support group for survivors and their caregivers.

A cancer survivor is defined by the American Cancer Society as anyone who is living with cancer, from the date of diagnosis. If you have ever heard the words, “You have cancer,” we invite you to participate as a survivor. Stop by the Survivor tent near registration if you have not already registered on-line.

Thank You To Our Sponsors! There have been many ways for the businesses and residents of Mt. Lebanon to support those touched by this disease, and to help the American Cancer Society find a cure for cancer. We once again called upon the local businesses to continue this fight against cancer in the form of Relay For Life sponsorships - financial contribution or in-kind donation of products and services.

The money we raise goes directly to: funding support programs for those in our area fighting cancer; education, prevention and other resources provided by the ACS; and critical cancer research to one day find a cure. Every dollar we raise gets Mt. Lebanon and others around the world one step closer to the end of this disease! Thank you to the following businesses we recognize as sponsors, and all the other organizations now shown below that have supported behind the scenes this year!
