Product Bulletin
From the beginning, the designobjective of the MSP430 teamwas to focus on the ultra-lowpower consumption of the com-plete system. The goal was tocreate a microcontrollerwhich consumes very little current in the sleepmodes and performs thegiven tasks in the activemode as fast as possible.
To reduce the currentconsumption of a system, the MSP430 allowsdesigners the ability toinfluence the active cur-rent consumption andactive time as well assleep mode current con-sumption and sleep time.
The active mode cur-rent consumption of theMSP430 is 400 µA in atypical 3-V system. Thetime to wake-up fromthe sleep mode to a totalfunctional system takes amaximum of 6 µs. This
allows the MSP430 to be in sleepmodes longer and eliminatesunnecessary energy use in theactive mode. The powerful 16-bit CPU core ensures a fast
execution of the tasks andtherefore reduces the activetime. This means that the higherthe performance of the CPUcore, the lower the system power

consumption. All MSP430 periph-eral modules are speciallydesigned to support these ultra-low power features.
The sleep modes offer areduced current consumptioneven when some peripherals arestill active. For example, in asimple real time clock (RTC), itis not necessary to keep thedevice in active mode. Anotherexample, the system can operatefrom the 32-kHz (ACLK) clockinstead of 1-4 MHz (MCLK) withthe timers and LCD still active. These examples are benefits ofthe most often used low-power
mode 3 (LPM3) which consumes1.3 µA typically. The currentconsumption can be reduceddown to 0.1 µA in LPM4 wherethe MSP430 is still capable of
processing external interrupts, for example from a connectedkeyboard. The sleep time can bemaximized due to the fast wake-up from the low-power modes.
In a modern household, many electronicapplications like TV sets or stereosystems are permanently in a standbymode. Assuming the total standby powerin a household is 10 W, a country with 40million households requires 400 MW justto supply the standby energy. Thismeans that a mid sized power plant isworking only to supply the standbyenergy for these parts.
The MSP430 is an ultra-low-powermicrocontroller family and can help to
reduce this standby current. The typicalcurrent consumption in low-power modeis 1.3 µA, where the device is still capa-ble of displaying information on the LCDdisplay or keeping a real-time clockupdated.
This ultra-low-power consumption is nolimitation for the outstanding high pro-cessing capability. The 16-bit RISC CPUcore can perform tasks like calculationof the energy, faster than conventional4- and 8-bit microcontrollers.
This combination sets a new benchmarkof processing capability versus energyconsumption.
The MSP430 offers 1200 MIPS/Watt inactive mode. Finally, the high integrationof the MSP430 allows the user to buildup a system with a minimum of externalcomponents. This leads to very costcompetitive system solutions.

The MSP430 offers a variety of possibil-ities to reduce the cost of the completesystem to a minimum.
• The use of the 32-kHz XTAL and theinternal DCO/FLL eliminates the needfor a second XTAL for the system fre-quency. Furthermore, a ceramic res-onator can be used in place of the32-kHz XTAL; or, the system can beoperated without any external com-ponent for the clock generation at all.
• The low-power features of theMSP430 make it possible to choose asmaller battery for the applicationand still increase the system life dueto the various power saving modes.
• High code efficiency leads to smallermemory sizes and drives cost down.
• The high integration of the devicemakes an external LCD driver or anexternal ADC unnecessary. This highlevel of integration saves system
cost and lowers the failure rate ofthe system by reducing the devicecount.
• The ease-of-use MSP430 architec-ture and the development toolssignificantly improve the develop-ment time and speed up the time-to-market.

The MSP430 RISC Core16-bit RISC CPUThe MSP430 CPU offers youmuch more than standard 4- and8-bit microcontrollers. The 16-bitRISC core is built with a highlyorthogonal structure.
Every instruction can be usedwith each of the seven differentaddressing modes. The reducedinstruction set consists of only27 core instructions. However, the user has, due to the 24 addi-tional emulated instructions thecapability of using highly famil-iar instructions. For example, afamiliar instruction like INC R4is available to the firmware pro-grammer and automatically emu-lated by the assembler with ADD #1,R4. This instruction willbe executed like all other regis-ter to register instructions inonly one cycle.
The orthogonal architectureof the MSP430 CPU core makesthe device extremely easy-to-use.
Sixteen (16) registers areimplemented in the CPU itselfand contain the Programcounter, the stack pointer, theStatus Register and the ConstantGenerator (which contains thehighly used constants -1, 0, 1, 2,4 and 8). This feature makes theMSP430 an extremely code effi-cient device using a lot less ofthe code space than convention-al CISC machines. The remain-ing 12 registers are available forgeneral usage.

The MSP430 Mixed-Signal Processor Roadmap
The hardware multiplicationmodule in the MSP430x33x con-figuration provides multipli-cations in less than one cycle. The two operands are movedinto registers inside the multi-plier module, and in the nextcycle, the result can be read out.
Oscillator / FLL ModuleThe clock network of the MSP430offers the designer flexibility. The Digital Controlled Oscillator(DCO) generates the system frequency of 1 to 4 MHz. The 32-kHz oscillator, which oper-ates with only a single 32-kHzcrystal, can be used to provide astable frequency over tempera-ture and operating voltage. The
integrated Frequency LockedLoop (FLL) regulates the systemfrequency MCLK with the stable32-kHz crystal frequency. It iseven possible to operate theMSP430 without any crystal atall, disable the FLL and just usethe DCO to generate the systemclock.
The product offers a fail-safefeature. If the crystal connectionis broken, the MSP430 continuesoperation with the lowest possi-ble frequency.
The DCO starts operation amaximum of 6 µs after a reset orinterrupt occurs. This provides aworking system in a fraction ofthe time needed with conven-tional microcontrollers.

MSP430x11x Configuration
The newest member in theMSP430 microcontroller familyoffers an unmatched ratio ofultra-low power consumption,16-bit RISC performance, andlow cost. The MSP430x11xfamily features an ultra-lowpower consumption rating of350 µA in active mode, 1.5 µA instandby mode and 0.1 µA in(RAM-retention) off mode. Withvolume pricing as low as $1 forROM versions, the 11x devicesare quickly becoming the bench-mark in this price/performancerange.
The 16-bit RISC core operatesup to 5 MHz, allowing most ofthe 27 core instructions to beexecuted within one 200-ns
cycle. This combination of 27core instructions and the orthog-onal architecture allows everyinstruction to be used in eachaddressing mode, making theMSP430x11x easy to program. It’s also completely code com-patible with TI’s other MSP430families.
Among the peripherals inte-grated into the new device are: a 16-bit timer with three capture/compare, 14 individual I/O signals,a new basic clock system, watch-dog timer and JTAG interface. The new basic clock systemmakes it possible to increase the maximum standby time to128 seconds. The memory sizesare 2 or 4 KB with the ROM
version and 4 KB with the low-power OTP version. The OTPversion (MSP430P112IDW) isavailable now.

MSP430x11x Application ExampleThe MSP430x11x series, new members to theMSP430 family, expands the reach of low-costsystem design to a higher level. A 10-year Real-TimeClock is one of many system applications thatminimize the cost to manufacturers while simplifythe design and development cycle drastically.
Working at Low Power Mode 3 (LPM3), theMSP430x11x receives the time input from a 32,768-Hzexternal crystal oscillator. With a connection to anoutside host device through UART or SPI port,MSP430x11x internally generates a timer interruptservice routine to wake-up once per second. Systemintegration engineers will be able to develop anapplication specific system by taking advantage ofthis 1.52-µA average current consumption solution.

The MSP430x31x configuration isthe most cost optimized versionwith the LCD driver in theMSP430 family. It offers all thefamily features like 16-bit RISC
core and ultra-low power
consumption. It can be used for sensor
applications by measuring theresistor values. The Timer/Port
module can perform this resis-tive to digital conversion bymeasuring the charge/discharge
time of an external capacitor. Ifthis function is not needed, thismodule can be used as a 16-bitTimer.
The Watchdog Timer can beused in 15-bit watchdog mode orin 16-bit general-purpose timermode.
The Basic Timer includestwo 8-bit timers for general use.It generates the basic LCD fre-quency and supports the realtime clock function.
The LCD driver module candrive up to 92 segments in 1 - 4MUX mode in this configuration.
The I/O port can be individu-ally configured and each pin hasinterrupt capability. The 8-bit
Timer/Counter supports serialcommunication protocols likeUART or I2C bus on the I/O port, the software routines are includ-ed in the MSP430 applicationreport.

The MSP430 requires only a minimum of externalcomponents to build up a complete system.
The low component count in the thermometershown ensures a fast design cycle, maximum flexi-bility via software and a very competitive systemcost.
For resistive sensors (such as thermistors) the16-bit A/D converter integrated in the Timer/PortModule is ideal. Three (3) additional external com-ponents: a crystal (optional), a battery and theLCD display are all that you need for a completesystem with the MSP430.

MSP430x32x Configuration
One of the many application exam-ples in the MSP430 application reportis the shown single-phase electricitymeter with the MSP430. This costcompetitive single-chip solution usesthe 14-bit ADC to convert the analogsignals of the voltage (via a voltagedivider on A2) and the current (via acurrent transformer on A1) into adigital value. A split power supplyenables signed measurement, whilethe LMx85 creates a referencevoltage on A3. The value of theconsumed energy is calculated by theCPU and directly displayed on theLCD or transmitted via the optionalserial (MBUS) connection. Non-volatile data storage is possible withan optional external EEPROM.

MSP430x33x Configuration
The Timer_A of the MSP430x33x configuration isideally suited for the generation of PWM-signals inseveral modes.
Continuous Mode: the Timer Register runs con-tinuously upwards and continues at zero after thevalue 0FFFFh. This mode allows up to five inde-pendent timing.
Up Mode: the Timer Register counts up to thecontent of Compare Register 0 (here the PeriodRegister) and restarts at zero when it has reachedthis value. If the Timer Register equals one of thefour Compare Latches the hardware task pro-grammed to the Output Unit is performed.
Up-Down Mode: the Timer Register counts up tothe content of Capture/Compare Register 0 (herethe Period Register) and counts down to zerowhen it has reached this value. PWM with the Timer_A (motor control application)
The new MSP430x33x configura-tion is focused on the high-endarea of applications. For this rea-son, this device generation wasequipped with some additionalfeatures.
The H/W multiplier moduleperforms 16x16, 16x8, 8x16 and8x8 multiplications with signed, unsigned and unsigned accumu-lation. After loading bothoperands into the multiplier, theresult is available in a separateregister; no extra cycle is neededfor the multiplication.
The Timer_A module includesa 16-bit timer/counter and five
capture / compare registers, which can be configured by theapplication to capture or com-pare mode. The capture mode isprimarily used to measure exter-nal or internal events from anycombination of positive, negativeor both edges; but, can also bestopped by software. The com-pare mode is primarily used togenerate timing for the softwareor application hardware or togenerate pulse-width modulatedoutput signals for various pur-poses like D/A conversion func-tions, PWM, or motor control.
The USART module has twofunctions for serial communica-tion included, a standard asyn-chronous communicationprotocol (UART up to 115.2kBaud) and a serial peripheralinterface function (SPI). One bitin a control register defines themode (which can be switchedback and forth in theapplication).
The number of I/O pins isincreased in this configuration to40. The LCD offers 30 segmentlines to drive up to 120 segmentsin 4MUX mode.

Dr. Krohn & StillerEmulators for Every BudgetDr. Krohn & Stiller supports theMSP430 family by a set of threedifferent emulators—one forevery budget. All three In-CircuitEmulators (Economy, Standardand Universal) are fullyequipped with at least 128K emu-lation RAM, 32K trace memoryand complex trigger capabilities.
Simulation Environment
MSP-SIM430
The MS-Windows basedSimulation Environment allowsyou to get familiar with theMSP430 quickly and easily. Thesource window allows editingand debugging of your code, along with some breakpointlogic. Several locations in thememory area, e.g. the systemstack can be displayedindependently.
The Simulation Environmentpackage contains also theMSP430 assembler, which canbe used directly from theSimulation Environment.
A custom specific LC displaycan be simulated with the LCDDesigner, which comes in theS/W package.
MSP-PRG430 Programming
Adapter
To help you program your OTPversions of the MSP430, TexasInstruments offers a Program-ming Adapter, which can beused for all family members.
It comes together with theprogramming software includingdocumentation, and allows thein-circuit programming of the
devices. The chip is assembledon the final PCB board and caneasily be programmed after-wards by connecting theProgramming Adapter to theMSP430 JTAG pins; no addition-al power supply on the board isneeded.
MSP-FPP430 Floating
Point Package
The Floating Point Package forthe MSP430 family is supportingthe basic arithmetic operations
add, subtract, multiply, divideand compare with a 24-bit or 40-bit mantissa. A conversionfrom/to binary and BCD formatis also supported. Support s/wlike square roots and trigono-metric functions is included aswell. The package makes use ofthe internal registers of theMSP430 RISC CPU; the hard-ware multiplier can be used inaddition.

Göpel electronicOn-chip Emulation Softwarefor the MSP430This solution is based on a com-plete software and hardware kitthat turns any PC into a power-ful device emulator. A standard-ized IEEE1149.1 / JTAG 4-wiretest bus is plugged onto theparallel port via scan controller, while a powerful 32-bit softwareenables access to the differentresources for programming, verification and debug. Highefficiency is achieved throughinteractive control and directdownload of the operation soft-ware into the on-chip EPROM.With the CPU emulator, debug-ging of TI assembler code ispossible.
A low-cost and true high-levelemulator is the result of featuressuch as break-point setting, stepfunction, re-assembler andextended register watching thatmakes the source code traceableand easy-to-debug. For recordinguser actions a script language isused. This ASCII language con-tains commands for memory andregister handling, for program-ming the EPROMS and blowingfuses.

instructions and on any addresswith an access type of read, write and opcode fetch. Interruptsimulation implements com-mands to launch specific inter-rupts at a specific cycle-count orperiodically. For interrupt simu-lation with intermittent inter-rupts, the same algorithm as thehardware, for choosing the high-est priority interrupt to be exe-cuted, will be selected. The sameinterface is available to work onthe EVK-Board (CW430R) andon the emulator from Dr. Krohn& Stiller (CW430K), so there is acommon interface available forall these tools.
