The University of Stirling is a charity registered in Scotland, Number SC 011159 6 September 2011 Dear Student, I hope you're looking forward to starting the MSc Public Communications Management programme in September - I know I am looking forward to meeting you! I thought you might be interested in getting a head start by reading the following titles - especially if you've not studied or been introduced to public communication or public relations in your previous degree. These texts will also be useful for your studies once they start. Pre-course reading list - Davis, Aeron (2010). Political Communication and Social Theory, London: Routledge - this text is on the reading list for your module on Public Affairs & Advocacy. Aeron's book is excellent and provides a solid background and understanding of political communication. - Ihlen, Ø., van Ruler, B., Fredriksson, M. (2009). Public Relations and Social Theory, London: Routledge - this edited collection is challenging but worth reading as it links key social theories with public relations practice. For example Habermas and his public sphere and theory of communicative action is discussed with regard to public relations; Goffman's work on framing analysis is linked to how public relations practitioners frame news. - J.Y. L’Etang (2008). Public Relations: Concepts, Practice and Critique, London: Sage Publications - this text is ideal for developing your critical analysis skills whilst also learning about the current public relations discussions and paradigms. Public communication is a specialist area within public relations so it is helpful for you to get insight into the broader arena of public relations - especially so you are familiar with what it encompasses and the key discussions and current issues. If you are interested in more reading before the start of the semester please don't hesitate to let me know! The same applies if you have any questions.
