Apps
Education Apps - thousands of apps but not Apple apps
No Texas Instrument Apps (Ipad offers TI Inspire app for $30)Music Maker Jam is a free app similar to Garage Band on Ipad.
No Google Drive (can only assess through internet) - want you to use Skydrive and Microsoft
Office
No apple apps will work! We have already been using these apps and will have to move to a
different app.
Functionality
Once you read the guide, device is pretty easy to use.
Transitioning between apps is really easy and can be switched to a basic windows form.
Teachers who are used to windows will like this fact.
Desktop mode is just like our school desktops, so it will make teachers feel more comfortable.USB allows teachers to plug into Smartboard and play sound through board and probably have
touch capability.
Keyboard
Not as intuitive as an Ipad, but is wider and is easier to type with two hands.

It is easier to place cursor for correcting, which is really important since the auto correct is not
as accurate (requires more proof reading). The keyboard also has options for numbers on the
front screen, makes entering passwords easier.
Google DriveSince this is a windows device, they want you to use Microsoft Office, therefore google drive is
not an option other than using the internet. The Ipad will allow you to use Google drive even
though they want you to use their software. Since typing on the internet is harder, using google
drive on the internet is not very user friendly.

C. Anderson (8th grade english)
L. Mack (Special Needs)
The new PC is a definite must-have. I love the start page with easy fingertip access for apps.
Having a split screen allows for the ability to work from side to side without flipping screens. This
is great for individuals who have trouble navigating back and forth from one page to the next,
especially if you are taking notes for a research paper. Microsoft's installation of 2013 word,
excel, etc.is another plus for this device, along with other features such as the math input panel.
With a slim, sleek design it is easier to handle.
M. Boland (Special Needs Aid)
I brought my Surface RT last year and really love it. It is great for all the things that I do - word
documents, excel, presentations, networking and . I love the keyboard that I purchased with it
and the magnetic snap connection is great with the Surface with its own kickstand. Even though
It does not do all of the APPS that the ipad does is the only downside that I have found. It also
has a usb port where you can put an external hard drive or flash drive if needed with your work
(when the network goes down - which seems to be quite often at school) You will still have
access to your lessons or material needed. I am glad that they are looking at other things out
there as they are changing daily. Whatever they decide I hope that the district will also invest in
protective covers for the IMS students' devices.
W. Green (7th grade science and technology teacher)
I like the size of the screen and the fact that flash will work on it. The ability to animate andsketch out concepts is probably comparable to an iPad. I am concerned about the slight
incompatibility with Google drive. The iPad just seems a bit easier to navigate, but it may just be
what I am used to. I am concerned about being able to project student work from any device to
the Smartboard.

- Keyboard is easier to use than Ipad
- Options for Word - likes how the correct gives you options to work with
- Pretty easy to figure out even though she has never used one
- ITS FUN
- Easy to erase and make corrections- Camera use is easy, takes good pictures
- Likes windows view over apps view
T. Winfree (6th grade honors) Used for about 15 minutes
Liked that it was a touch screen
Liked the mobility of the tablets (surface or Ipad)
Panoramic view on camera was cool
Felt that using the surface would take some getting used to over the Ipad because she has used
for years.
Concerned about how breakable all 3 devices are.
Liked how easy it was to use the favorites bar on the internet. Ipad is not as obvious.MINI Xbox which is cool, because she was used to working with the Xbox
Liked the news section on the homescreen, made it easy and caught her attention
D. Brown (7th grade College Prep) Used for about 15 minutes
Likes split screen with apps
Has Microsoft word at home, so likes the fact that it is compatible
Like having Skype
Never used IPad, but prefers tablet over Chromebook
Can't do as much on Chromebook as Tablet

Student Comments:
I absolutely love my Surface. It's perfect for note-taking because it comes with Office and the
battery life is amazing. Its usually the only thing I take with me when I leave for class in the
morning. Its fun and easy to carry around with me all day.- Isabel, college student from NYC,
NY
If you merged my tablet and school laptop together, it would be this device. I use my Surface all
the time--OneNote is perfect for it, since you can type notes just like you would on a laptop.
Beyond that it is my news, social media, and game device.- Kris, college student from
Edwardsville, IL
I used to carry around my laptop and a bunch of notebooks wherever I went. Now, my Surface
Pro is the only thing I take to class with me. Its thinner, lighter, and can do all the same stuff my
laptop does. I also love that Surface easily saves all my stuff to SkyDrive. If I ever want to work
on my old laptop or a desktop in the computer lab, my files are always accessible and ready to
go.- Andy, college student from Cambridge, MA
