Biographical Sketch of Marwood Darlington, 1912-1992
Marwood Darlington was born in West Chester, PA, on January 14, 1912, the youngest son of
Abraham Brinton and C. Anita (Dutton) Darlington. Marwood was a graduate of West Chester
High School and Taylor Business School in Philadelphia. His interest in historical research and
genealogy led him to join Chester County Historical Society in 1935 when he was twenty-three.
He was elected to the Board of Managers in 1938, but resigned to accept the position of
assistant librarian. During his tenure, Mr. Darlington co-edited and published with Bart
Anderson a historical and genealogical periodical, Chester County Collections. He also served
as corresponding secretary of the Society from 1837 to 1943, when he resigned his position to
join the Army.
Mr. Darlington’s war service and a career at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., took
him away from Chester County for almost twenty years, but h never lost interest in the county or
the Society. He often sent information and items of interest to Chester County that he discovered
while working or travelling. He began compiling an updated Darlington genealogy, based on
Gilbert Cope’s Genealogy of the Darlington Family published in 1900. Eventually it grew to fill
ten large notebooks and a three-foot long shelf in the Society’s library.
Marwood Darlington returned to Chester County in 1962. He worked part-time as an assistant
librarian at CCHS and on his own as a genealogist and researcher. He retired from the Society in
1976, but he continued on as a library volunteer, completing many projects and sharing his
extensive knowledge of Chester County history. Mr. Darlington conducted an active private
genealogy research practice and was a familiar face not only at CCHS. But also at the Historical
Society of Pennsylvania, the State Archives at Harrisburg, and other places where his research
took him.
He was a quiet, gentle man whose hobbies were music and travel. When young he studied violin
and voice and for many years sang in the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church choir in
Washington, D.C. His biography of Patrick Gilmore, a nineteenth-century Irish band leader, was
published in 1950. His trips were usually planned around historic as well as scenic sites. It was a
source of pride that he had visited all fifty U.S. states as well as Canada and Europe. He never
married and continued to live in the family home at 309 West Union Street in West Chester with
his brother Maurice. It was the same house that his parents inherited from his mother’s parents
and where he lived the rest of his life. Marwood Darlington died on August 26, 1992 at Friends
Hall in West Chester following an illness.
