5 4 United Brethren Church Reform Movement Writings 1881-1896

These pamphlets deal with the United Brethren in Christ

controversy of 1889-1896. Schism developed from a prohibition of membership in secret societies; the policy had long been a feature of the church. A liberal reform element sought to modify this ban. A conservative, or Radical, element, led by Milton Wright, fought the

attempted changes. Court cases over which faction owned church property aggravated the quarrel, which eventually split the church. Courts held the “Liberals” to be the true church and ruled that the

“Radicals” had seceded and organized a new society. Wilbur Wright authored two pamphlets supporting his father’s views.

5 5 Religious Telescope, Volume 100, Number 52 Dec 29, 1934 6 Keiter Affair 1893-1911 These files contain materials pertaining to a scandal that developed

over the management of the United Brethren Publishing House in Dayton, Ohio, by the agent Millard F. Keiter. In 1895, certain church leaders, including Milton Wright, began to suspect that the books were not properly kept. Audits uncovered large discrepancies and Keiter was forced out of office. This affair cuased a great divide in the Church between those members who supported Milton Wright in his unwavering attempt to prove that Keiter embezzled funds and those who supported Keiter.

In 2014, Special Collections and Archives in the Wright State University Libraries and the Dayton Metro Library partnered to create an online archive of the most complete run of Wright Brothers newspapers available to date. This project, completed in 2015, was made possible through a donation to the Communication Department at Wright State University from The Greenwood Family. The archive includes all of the issues listed below, as well as additional issues from the collections of the Dayton Metro Library.

Subseries 12 Genealogical Writings and Correspondence Milton Wright was an avid genealogist. His passion started when he was a young man and continued until his death. Milton wrote to family members throughout the United States and Germany seeking information on the Wright and Koerner families. Orville continued the search after Milton’s death in 1917. Most of the letters in this subseries are those received by Milton and Orville. On a few occasions, there are copies of letters sent by Orville in reply or by his secretary, Mabel Beck. At the end of many of the files are undated materials in Milton’s handwriting. These materials include essays, notes, and family trees. The letters are not strictly genealogical. The correspondent would also include news on daily activities, health, school, war, religion, and temperance. Of particular note are the many letters of condolence to Milton upon the death of Wilbur Wright of typhoid in 1912. Some letters praise Wilbur and Orville for their accomplishments in the development of flight. Milton Wright also wrote several essays about his family and his life. These are included at the beginning of this subseries. Box File Description Date 9 1 Milton Wright Essays
