Energy can take many forms..

Today we will talk about Mechanical Energy

It takes on two forms• Kinetic• Potential

Page 4: Mrs. Trotter Vian Middle School Science. Mechanical Electrical chemical sound thermal radiant.

Kinetic Energy The energy of an object in motion

Page 5: Mrs. Trotter Vian Middle School Science. Mechanical Electrical chemical sound thermal radiant.

The amount of kinetic energy an object has depends on two factors Speed (or velocity) at which the object

is moving The mass of the object

Heavier objects will have more kinetic energy than lighter objects

Potential Energy Described as stored energy

• energy is stored by doing work against a force like gravity

• Also, the amount of potential energy can increase with mass

Page 7: Mrs. Trotter Vian Middle School Science. Mechanical Electrical chemical sound thermal radiant.

A rubber band pulled back at 10 cm will have greater potential energy than one that is pulled back at only 5 cm

THE MORE WORK YOU USE- THE MORE POTENTIAL

ENERGY THE OBJECT WILL HAVE

Conservation of Energy Remember that energy cannot be

created nor destroyed It will just change to other forms

Page 9: Mrs. Trotter Vian Middle School Science. Mechanical Electrical chemical sound thermal radiant.

If energy is not created or lost during a transformation~ where does all energy come from??? Remember that the Sun is the source

of almost all energy on the Earth
