PREPARATION

Print and copy pages 4-12 (for Clue 3 choose page 9 for Imperial Measurement

System OR page 10 for the Metric Measurement System) for your students. You can

do either of the following:

• Combine the pages to form a booklet for each student to work on; OR

• Hand out worksheets as you want students to work on them – please note that

if you choose this option, students will always need the ‘Possible Places List’

page handy.

IMPORTANT: The clues must be completed in the order I have arranged them in i.e.

1-5!

HOW TO USE

Read through the article on page 4 ‘Math Mystery: Case of the Misplaced Pot of

Gold’ to set up the activity and engage students.

Instruct students that they will need to keep referring back to their Possible Places

list after solving each clue.

Students work through each clue, either guided by the teacher or independently

(your choice). After completing a math worksheet, if students completed correctly,

a clue will be revealed. For example: The building shape has no curves. So, in this

example, students then need to go to their places list and cross off any building

shape that has curves.

Once students have correctly completed all of the clues, only one place will

remain and that place is where Leroy McClumsy’s pot of gold is. On page 12, the

teacher ticks off the ‘Well done . . . ‘ box and the student can receive an Award

(provided on page 20). If a student gets the wrong place, tick the box “Oops! Try

again. . . “ and instruct the student to go over their work to see where they went

wrong.

ANSWERS

I have provided answer sheets for all of the clues, as well as where the pot of gold

is! You will find these on pages 13-19.

AWARDS

On page 20 you will find awards that you can print and award to students who

solve the case correctly. I suggest making it a rule that students must complete all

of the questions on each worksheet to be eligible for the award (even if they can

guess what the clue is without finishing the math questions!).

If you need help or have any questions, or notice an error in my work please email me on [email protected] Thanks! ☺

MATH MYSTERY:

CASE OF The Misplaced pot

of gold!

March 17 _______

There’s been lots of excitement around Mathhattan’s St Patrick’s Day

celebrations. However, a leprechaun, named Leroy McClumsy, is

devastated because he has misplaced his pot of gold!

In an interview with Leroy McClumsy, he stated:

“I’ve been running about Mathhattan getting things ready for St Patrick’s

Day and now I cannot remember where I left my pot of gold!”

Nobody in town has yet reported seeing Leroy McClumsy’s pot of gold.

This looks like it is going to be a case for the Police Department and a

super Math Detective to help poor Leroy find his treasure.

Leroy McClumsy wanted the following statement published for all citizens

to see:

“I would really appreciate anyone’s help to find my pot of gold. I’m going

to be in BIG trouble if it isn’t found, and St Patrick’s Day will be ruined for

me. Please, I am begging that the best math detective help out on this

case!”

MATH DETECTIVE NEEDED TO HELP LEROY MCCLUMSY

The police have gathered some clues after interviewing Leroy McClumsy

and made a list of possible places they suspect Mr McClumsy could have

left it. However, they need a super detective with math skills to help them

solve this case fast. Let’s hope Leroy McClumsy’s pot of gold can be

found!
