The American “frontier” had ended. There was no more room to expand west. Wanted to expand trade to other parts of the
world.

During this time, powerful European nations created large empires by gaining economic and political control over weaker nations
The search for materials and markets drove imperialism
Also, some people believed they could “lift up” the world’s “uncivilized people” by sharing Christianity and Western Civilization (Democracy)
