The quality of the area’s produce is matched only by the beauty of its forests and majesty of the ocean. Here, towering karri trees sprawl to the edge of dramatic limestone cliffs that fall to isolated beaches and world-class surf breaks. Beneath the forest floor a network of caves sit carved out of the limestone bedrock.

If you’re travelling between June and December, catch sight of humpback whales on their annual migration. Heading south and east from Margaret River takes you through the organic and artisan producers that line the route between Manjimup, Pemberton and onto the coastal national parks of Denmark and Albany.

Ningaloo Reef and the Coral CoastStretching north of Perth, the Coral Coast is home to awesome marine life, sandy beaches and the warm, turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. The southernmost Coral Coast attractions are within an easy two hour drive of Perth, and include the extraordinary ancient rock formations that make up the Pinnacles. Driving north takes you to the bubblegum pink waters of Hutt Lagoon, dramatic gorges and onwards to the marine wonders of Ningaloo Reef.

Ningaloo Reef is the only places in Western Australia where you can swim with gentle giants of the ocean the mighty whale sharks (April to July) and humpback whales (June to November). If you’d rather stay dry? No problem. You’ll likely encounter these marine giants from aboard an eco-cruise.

A coastal drive back to Perth takes you through wildflower-filled National Parks and the World Heritage Listed Shark Bay. Here you’ll meet wild dolphins at Monkey Mia, tread beaches made entirely of white shells, and see carpets of wildflowers from July to October.

Esperance and the Golden OutbackWestern Australia’s most expansive region, the Golden Outback stretches from the Australia’s Biggest Rock – Mt Augustus in the north to Australia’s whitest beaches around Esperance in the south. As a Muslim traveller, I find Margaret River’s charms are legion: it is safe and comes with inviting culture, breathtaking landscapes, great Muslim-friendly food as well as welcoming people. It offers ample amusing activities all year round too, making it one destination that should be on everyone’s travel wish list! Here is my ultimate checklist for a first-timer to the region, which can be ticked off easily in two days!

1. SAVOUR THE FANTASTIC GASTRONOMIC FARES

To dine in Margaret River is an epicurean journey in itself. There are a fair number of restaurants to choose from with uniquely different menus. Voyager Estate is a temple of fine culinary frequented by many celebrities, while Lamont's Smiths Beach puts out tasty, artful dishes celebrating locally sourced ingredients.

Dinners at The Common are popular among locals while The Noshery serves great breakfasts to start your day right. And before you go home, pay a visit to Bettenay’s Margaret River and get premium nougat bars which would make a delicious souvenir for your loved ones.

2. SPOT THE STING RAYS AT HAMELIN BAY

It’s fun and free! The friendly sting rays here are known to swim beneath the waves close to the shore. I can assure you that this is an amazing experience and a great activity for the whole family.

3. TRY THE GLAMPING EXPERIENCE WITH OLIO BELLO

Skip your normal 13’x25’ hotel room in the town and try glamping experience with Olio Bello in its tastefully designed eco-tents complete with cloud-like beds and fresh rainwater shower. I love how quiet it is here at nights – if you listen carefully, there’s even a relaxing sound of the waves crashing onto the nearby Gracetown shore blowing in the air. Bring a book and read at the deck, or sit by the lake and admire the sparkling stars on a black velvet sky – either way, staying here will be a refreshing digital detox experience you’ll definitely enjoy.

Brownie points: The tents here are spacious with ample space for Muslims to perform prayers, and they also serve Muslim-friendly menu at its on-site cafe.

4. MARVEL AT THE STUNNING LANDSCAPE OF NGILGI CAVE

Dramatic stalactites and stalagmites adorning the chambers can be seen by several easily accessible trails. Pair it up with an insightful storytelling by Josh Whiteland from the Koomal Dreaming tour, and you’ll go home with not only enough photos to feed your Instagram but also a much greater understanding on the culture and lore of Wadandi people who have been residing in the area for over 50,000 years.

5. LISTEN TO THE MUSIC OF THE OCEAN AT CAPE LEEUWIN LIGHTHOUSE

Possibly the most photographed landmark in the region, this lighthouse is one of the tallest lighthouses on the mainland Australia at 39 metres tall, affording glorious views of the sea where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet. On a windy day, just stand by the railing on the top storey to listen to the melody played by the sea while you soak up the rich history behind this heritage legacy.

dAY 1Perth – Cervantes – GeraldtonBegin your self-drive journey from Perth via the Indian Ocean Drive as it is one of the prettiest ways to experience this most unique landscape. Along the way, stop at beaches, top fishing spots, and national parks filled with wildflowers to capture beautiful panorama photos.

Remember to head for the rock lobster capital of Cervantes for lunch. The Lobster Shack, which is located at the lovely beachfront of Cervantes, not only offers delicious fresh rock lobsters and seafood lunches suitable for Muslim travellers, but factory tours and daily boat tours to collect the lobster pots.

After a satisfying meal, continue the journey to Geraldton, a bustling modern foreshore with water activities and beautiful parks to explore. Aside from great facilities and offerings, the people here are welcoming and respect Muslim travellers when it comes to food and accommodation. Some restaurants here do offer Halal menu upon request, which is a bonus!

dAY 2HMAS Sydney II Memorial & Scenic Air TourVisit the magnificent HMAS Sydney II Memorial, which was built to honour the 645 Australian soldiers lost during World War II. After that, head over to the Geraldton Air Charter for a scenic air tour to the Abrolhos Islands en route to Pink Lake. The chartered scenic air tour is an amazing experience to begin with. It offers a stop at East Wallabi Island for an enjoyable walking tour at Turtle Bay.

dAY 3 Kalbarri National ParkWith over 186,096 hectares of outback adventures and dramatic gorges, Kalbarri National Park offers various activities for whatever your age. Feeling adventurous? Try abseiling offered by a professional and licensed operator. Enjoy the exhilarating experience of abseiling down some cliffs before heading down to the tranquil Murchison River for a relaxing lunch. Whether a regular adventure seeker or never abseiled before, this tour is suitable for all.

Quad biking is another activity that is not to be missed. With comfortable attire and sunscreen, the fully guided self-drive quad bike tour offers a relaxing ride with amazing scenery at Wagoe Beach, which is known for its white sandy beaches and being a popular reef fishing spot.

dAY 4Kalbarri – PerthHead over to Port Gregory for a quick visit to the glorious Pink Lake before returning to Perth. Pink Lake, which is officially known as Hutt Lagoon, is a salt lake that has a bright pink hue due to the presence of colourful algae blooms. Then, make your way back to Perth.

Perth International Airport is 18 kilometres from the city centre. There are four terminals at Perth Airport – T1, T2, T3 and T4 - located at two terminal precincts that are separated by a short, 15 minute drive: the T1/T2 precinct and the T3/T4 precinct.

Remember to check your itinerary carefully, or contact your airline, to make sure you go to the right terminal, as a number of airlines operate from more than one terminal.

getting Around PErTh Perth is an easy city to get around. The metropolitan area has a great range of options for public transport, driving, and walking. This practical information on Perth’s public transport system will make moving around the city very simple.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

To use public transport including buses, trains, and ferries in Perth, it’s recommended that you purchase a Transperth Smartrider card at Transperth Info Centre or from convenience stores and newsagents. Once you have the Smartrider card, a 10% discount to your fares will be automatically applied when you travel.

TRAINS

Perth’s rail network is a great way to visit attractions across the city and reach the surrounding suburbs. Within the city centre, there is a free transit zone for trains travelling in the area between City West, Elizabeth Quay, and Claisebrook stations.

From major stations in the city including Perth Station and Elizabeth Quay Station, you can catch a train to reach destinations such as Fremantle and Cottesloe Beach.

Transperth Information

BUSES

Perth has free bus services (CAT buses in the city centre and in Fremantle. There are multiple bus loops which depart every 5-15 minutes between 6am and 7pm most days. These buses are particularly useful for travel between Perth or Fremantle’s hotels and attractions.

Public bus services will take you from Perth Busport or Elizabeth Street Bus Station to attractions further out of the city centre. Catch the 935 bus to reach Kings Park.

The hop-on, hop-off Perth Explorer bus is another great way to see Perth’s attractions. You can purchase a one day, or 2 day ticket. The bus stops at popular attractions Tickets can also be purchased for day tours outside of the city, visiting the Pinnacles and Wave Rock.

Public buses are an easy way to get to Perth Airport from the city. From Elizabeth Quay Station in downtown, take the 380 bus to get to Terminals 1 and 2, or the 40 bus for Terminals 3 and 4. Each of these bus services run approximately every half hour. You can use the Smartrider card to pay for this airport service, which costs the same as a regular bus fare within the city.

FERRIES

With a Smartrider card, you can catch a public ferry across the Swan River. From Elizabeth Quay Jetty, a ferry departs for Mends Street Jetty every 15-30 minutes between 6:30am and 11:30pm. This is a great way to access Perth Zoo, and catch a spectacular view of the Perth skyline.
