Please help support your children’s day by assuring they have all the learning materials and resources such as homework, musical instruments, and lunches. This helps to reduce their stress and feel confident they are ready for the day ahead. Additionally, the snow days provide a great opportunity to read, play games and interact with one another. This week of February 22 students in Kindergarten through 5 th Grade will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on investigations in a mobile science lab. The mobile lab is run by the Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation and is provided to the students courtesy of the Lisbon PTA and the Howard County Farm Bureau. Lab experiences for students varied by grade level and included topics such as the life cycle of various wetland animals & plants, the impact of oil spills on aquatic life & agriculture and water pollution. The sessions ranged from 30 to 50 minutes each and allowed students to work in groups, learn from guest teachers and see authentic artifiacts. We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to have our students involved in this unique learning experience! CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURS: This week, third grade students heard about the newest instructional seminar, Creative Entrepreneurs. Instructional Seminars are interest-based groups that meet with a G/T Resource Teacher once weekly during recess (1:30 - 2:00). Interested students can obtain applications in their team area. A copy is also attached. Students need to complete their applications on their own at home, obtain parental signatures, and return them to their homeroom teachers by the Monday, February 22nd. This seminar will meet during recess on Wednesdays and requires approximately a 10-week commitment. REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN for the Summer Institutes for Talent Development, sponsored by the HCPSS G/T Program. The program catalog and registration materials for these tuition-based summer classes are available at http://www.hcpss.org/summer-programs/ The curriculum for these classes is focused on talent development and provides academically and artistically rigorous activities for students entering grade 1 - 8. Session 1 is scheduled for June 27 - July 8 (except July 4). Session 2 is scheduled for July 11 - July 22. Both sessions will be held at Mayfield Woods Middle School.

IT’S TIME TO REGISTER FOR KINDERGARTEN: Registration for students entering Kindergarten in August 2016 starts on Monday, February 29th and runs through Friday, March 4th from 9:00 a.m. at 3:00 p.m. Parents or guardians are to register students at the school serving the address where the child’s parent or guardian resides. Information on neighborhood schools can be found through School Locator on the school system website or by calling the Public Information Office at 410-313-6682. The following documents are needed for registration: • Child’s evidence of birth • An authorized record of immunizations • Proof of residency in the form of a lease or deed and a utility bill • Photo ID of parent/guardian • Proof of custody (if applicable) Please visit http://www.hcpss.org/schools/kindergarten-registration/ to see a complete list of documents required for registration. FROM THE ART ROOM: We are looking for donations of: *happy meal toys *games pieces (no Puzzles) *old toy cars *plastic action figures or animals *old postcards or calendars Also we are requesting photos of pets from first graders From Student Teacher Sammi: Hello Lisbon Elementary Parents and Guardians, My name is Samantha Nachlas and I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself, as I will be the student teacher in Ms. Costello’s art room over the next several weeks. I am a painter as well as an undergraduate in the art education program at Towson University and I am excited to work alongside Ms. Costello and with your students for the duration of my elementary internship. If anyone has any questions regarding my time with Lisbon Elementary, I can be reached at [email protected]. I will also be sending out an update regarding my time with your students with more information about what they will be learning during my time in the classroom. Lastly, for fourth grade, Ms. Costello and I are in need of pieces of wood, preferably sanded that are between the sizes of 4” x 6” and 8” x 10”, that are at least ¾ of an inch thick, for our expressive landscape unit. The pieces do not have to be cut in perfect rectangles or squares but should be four sided. For fourth grade parents who are willing to donate, we will happily collect pieces in the art room and I thank you in advance for your willingness, cooperation, and participation! LES PTA 2016 BINGO FUNDRAISER: The LES PTA is holding its annual Bingo Fundraiser on Friday, March 11, 2016 @ 6:30 p.m. at St. Michael's Church. PTA REFLECTIONS PROGRAM: Lisbon PTA would like to congratulate students on their 37 entries in the National PTA Reflections program. The theme for this year was "Let your imagination fly!" After a period of judging at the local level, 15 of the 37 entries moved up to the county level for judging. From these 15 entries from Lisbon, five will now go on to the state level for judging. Congratulations to the five Lisbon students whose entries will continue in the PTA Reflections process: Bailey Kim (Literature) Regan Fleisher (Visual Arts) Alyssa Conte (Dance Choreography) Rowan Hastings, Piper Stimler (Photography) We congratulate all Lisbon participants on their creative entries, and encourage students to enter the PTA Reflections competition next fall! THE RYAN CONLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP PANCAKE BREAKFAST: Please join us on Sunday, February 14th at the Lisbon Volunteer Fire Station for the annual pancake breakfast fundraiser for the Ryan Conley Memorial Scholarship. All you can eat breakfast buffet including pancakes, scrambled eggs, potatoes, sausage, bacon, toast, chipped beef, and sausage gravy. A portion of the proceeds raised at the breakfast will be donated to Ryan's scholarship. The breakfast will be open from 7:30 - 11:30 a.m. Ages 5 and under: free; ages 6 - 10: $4; adults: $8. This scholarship honors a graduating Glenelg High senior who is active in the community. THE BUSHY PARK REGIONAL EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER (RECC): Preschool programs are now accepting applications for classes for the 2016-2017 school year. These classes include children with and without disabilities. The program’s focus is helping all children develop communication, literacy, math, problem solving, motor, and social skills. Parents of children who will be 3 by September 1, 2016 for the 2016-2017 school year may see Gail Phillips in the school office for an application packet beginning February 16, 2016. There are no 4 year-old peer openings for the 2016-2017 school year. All applications must be returned by March 22, 2016. A limited number of openings are available for children without disabilities. Children are selected based upon screening information given on the application form and the “Ages and Stages Questionnaire,” as well as observations of the child’s participation in a playgroup. The Howard County Public School System will offer a prekindergarten option in 2016-2017 for income-eligible children who will be four years old by September 1, 2016.
