Preliminaries Turn to Elements, p. 455, and read the
Mark Strand quote: “Ink runs from the corners of my mouth. / There is no happiness like mine. / I have been eating poetry.”
In your notebooks, respond to the following prompt: “People have different feelings about poetry. Some people know they love it. Others think they hate it. Maybe you are somewhere in between. Reread the quotation. Why do you think Mark Strand uses the metaphor of eating to express the pleasure he gets from reading poetry?”
Objectives: The students will be able to define
some of the elements of poetry. The students will be able to analyze
how Carl Sandburg uses these elements in “Jazz Fantasia” (PA 1.2C and 1.3A, C, D and F)
The students will be able to write a free-verse poem that imitates a sound (PA 1.4A).

Homework: Free Verse Poem Free verse lacks any sustained patterns
in rhyme and rhythm. Write a 10-line poem in free verse. Each line
must have at least 5 words. Due Dec. 18.
