Term 6: July 2017 Mr Stuart Smith Principal Dear Parent/Carer I hope you are all having a good summer. In this final newsletter of last year you will see great events and achievements of our students at the academy during Term 6. It has been a real privilege working with you all in my first year and I am very much looking forward to working with you all in the future. Please also see the seperate sheet of events scheduled for Terms 1 and 2. Stuart Smith Principal Enrichment Programme Year 5 During this term we have been working with our primary feeder schools on our enrichment program. Various primary schools have visited us and we have been to their schools to deliver lessons in: Food Technology, Science, Maths, PE and Languages. The aim of this programme is to give Year 5 primary school students a taste of our lessons at the academy to start their transition process ahead of Year 6. Thanks to all the staff who have helped in this programme. Fifty Year 5 pupils from Castledown and their teachers visited the Science department on Wednesday 21st June, for a taster session. They were learning about how they can test acids and alkalis using red cabbage indicator. The Year 5 students saw a rainbow of colours and used this information to work out the ‘unknown’ solution was an acid. The two lessons were supported by four of our Year 8s; they were fantastic ambassadors for both science and the school AND the Year 5s loved working with them. Well done! Charity Fundraising Fantastic achievement by our students and staff for raising £1,012.15 towards treatment for our ex student Nikki https://www.youcaring.com/ nikkikatayamanilsson-834956 Students in Firehills have been raising money for Children with Cancer UK. They raised a staggering £609.75. This was presented to Emily Surridge who at 2 was diagnosed with ovarion cancer. Music at THA The music department has been extremely busy this term. We have had the Rockstead Inspection 2017 at The Palace and Zooquarium on the pier. Our students have performed at both events and have been absolutely marvellous. Please note: If your son/daughter feels unwell during the day, they must go to Student Services in the first instance to be assessed by the Student Welfare Officer; they must not telephone/message home themselves. If our staff assess your child as not well enough to stay in school, a phone call home will be made. Could we respectfully request that parents do not arrive at the school to collect their child unless requested to by our staff.

Students in Firehills have been raising money for Children with Cancer UK. They raised a staggering £609.75. This was presented to Emily Surridge who at 2 was diagnosed with ovarion cancer.

Music at THAThe music department has been extremely busy this term.

Each character was individual and very different, but the cast all really supported each other, and worked incredibly well as a team, which definitely helped the flow and atmosphere of the performance. The costumes were also amazing – abstract face make-up and alternative outfits, which put an original spin on the play.

All in all, the night was absolutely amazing, and everyone said they would recommend it. Many thanks to Miss Green and the English/Drama departments for making the trip happen.

Year 10 Globe Theatre Trip – Romeo and Juliet - Review by Ruby Kelleher, Year 10 - Social/PSHE Lead Student

Lights down, audience silent and a moment of anticipation before the show commences. And then, a unanimous look of confusion across the theatre as two heavily masked women appeared…giving birth to coffins.

After the initial shock and realisation that this wasn’t going to be the conventional retelling of Romeo and Juliet that we’d all been expecting, the audience settled down.

The play was loud, bolshie and full of energy, with modern twists alongside the original script and storyline, creating an intriguing, engaging show.

Year 8 Crucible Trip 2017- Review by Ben Ridgers. On Thursday 27th April 2017 Year 8 visited The Royal Theatre in Brighton to watch the excellent performance of ‘The Crucible’. ‘The Crucible’ is a dark play based on 16th Century witches and how they were killed throughout the village of Salem. The play was very well acted over the course of the 3 hours, and there was great anticipation throughout from the audience all afternoon.

The Royal Theatre is a beautiful building located in the heart of Brighton. The theatre has four levels - the ground floor, the second tier, the third tier and the fourth tier. We were lucky enough to be on the top tier, so we got an excellent view!

Altogether, the whole trip was very exciting, and was incredibly interesting. It was a very dramatic play and gave us all a better understanding of the whole story. All in all, we had a great day!

Harry Potter Trip - Review by Blair Hirst, Year 9I really enjoyed the Year 9 English trip to Warner Bros Studio, Harry Potter World. Experiencing the original sets from the films brought the stories to life even more (if that’s possible!)

I was particularly in awe of the incredible animations of some of Rowlings’ extraordinary creatures and the detail displayed in every costume.

However, it would be very interesting to see some of the scenes transformed into an immersive experience by including weather simulators or even the sweet aroma of Honeydukes Confectionery.

Overall the entire trip had a very relaxed atmosphere and everyone really appreciated having been awarded such a fascinating opportunity!

Enrichment Programme for Year 5Year 10 students performed two outstanding pieces for the local feeder primary schools. Performances included Roald Dahl's Little Red Riding Hood, where students experimented with Trestle Theatre Masks and physical theatre.

They also directed their own very funny and short, fast paced version of Romeo and Juliet which was modernised to include Snap Chat and DABBING!

The Year 5 students thoroughly enjoyed their time at The Hastings Academy working with our extremely talented Year 10 students.

Graduation 2017The evenings of 18th and 19th July saw students from each school graduating. Very proud moment for students and parents alike. Well done to all.
