Teacher’s introduction- A stinky adventure in your classroom

We are delighted to present for the first time live on stage, David Walliams’ hilarious novel for children Mr Stink illustrated by acclaimed artist Quentin Blake. The production is directed and adapted by Matthew White (Director of the recent West End production of Sweet Charity and Little Shop of Horrors and the forthcoming production of Top Hat ) with music composed by Matt Brind (Musical Director for Legally Blonde and Conductor and Orchestrator for John Barrowman’s latest album).

Chloe doesn’t like school very much. She isn’t as cool as the other kids. No iPhone, no DS and no friends. Then she meets MR STINK – the local tramp. Yes, he smells a bit but he’s the only person who’s ever been nice to her and that includes her mother –

an awful snob who wants to be the local MP and is trying to rid the streets of its homeless. About to lose her only friend, Chloe finds Mr Stink a secret hiding place…

but is there more to him than meets the nose?

Bring Mr Stink and Chloe’s fun filled adventure directly into your classroom using these interactive resources and worksheets.

Mr Stink sensitively explores many issues relevant to pupils today. These resources harness all the fun, energy and warmth of Mr Stink, enabling teachers and students to examine the themes of family relationships, bullying and homelessness. The production and its accompanying resources support students in developing their personal expression skills and finding their voice in the community just as Chloe did with the help of Mr Stink, in the story.

This imaginative production incorporates puppetry, original songs and comedy devices. Actors play multiple roles and scratch ‘n’ sniff booklets captivate audiences with a unique sensory experience. The resource and activity sheets will enable students to explore dramatic devices and develop their understanding of how such mechanisms work behind the scenes to create a musical comedy. Resources and activity sheets enable students to explore these devices and develop their understanding of the roles they play as storytelling and structural devices.

All of these activities can be delivered easily by teachers in a classroom setting and provide an interactive, fun and creative platform upon which pupils can respond imaginatively to this lively production.

Mr Stink Curriculum Links Worksheets and activities included in this pack cover various aspects of the KS2 and KS3 curriculum including citizenship, english and drama and literacy.

Mr Stink, the story

• Support pupils to recall and learn from Mr Stink and Chloe’s adventure story using storyboard resources and Quentin Blake Mr Stink illustrations.

• Encourage students to think about how the story is broken down into sections below.

• Whilst recapping the story ask pupils to consider the key moments in Chloe and Mr Stink’s journey.

Chloe Crumb is 12 years old she lives with her Mum, Dad and sister Annabelle in a small, semi-detached house in the suburbs of a large town. Chloe’s mother, the formidable Mrs Crumb is standing in the local elections and she will stop at nothing to win. Chloe’s sister Annabelle spends most of her time being perfect, whilst Chloe’s long suffering father has recently lost his job at the car factory and spends his days hiding in the cellar hoping that his wife won’t notice that he is now jobless.

Chloe is really unhappy, her mother often ignores her at home and she is lonely and friendless at her posh private school. Her only outlet is in her writing - she loves writing vampire stories. One day Chloe comes across a smelly old tramp that lives on a bench in the local park: he is known in the area as Mr Stink and he is guarding a closely kept personal secret. Chloe and Mr Stink become friends.

Meanwhile Mrs Crumb is out campaigning, telling anyone who will listen that her hard-line policies include clearing the streets of all homeless people. Chloe is worried that she’ll lose her new friend and, unbeknown to her parents, she invites him to come and live in their garden shed.

Meanwhile Mrs Crumb, an avid self-publicist, has arranged an interview with a leading journalist from the Times. To Mrs Crumb’s horror Mr Stink suddenly appears in the breakfast room during the all-important interview. She faints. Misinterpreting the situation the journalist writes a glowing review of Mrs Crumb, praising her benevolent policies and applauding her for taking homeless people in off the streets.

This leads to an appearance, with Mr Stink, on live television. Mr Stink is fast becoming a celebrity, and everyone wants to meet him, including the Prime Minister of England. Chloe and Mr Stink are invited to tea at Number 10, but Mr Stink embarrasses himself and Chloe loyally sticks up for him. On the way back Mr Stink tells her his tragic story and Chloe tells Mr Stink that she wants to leave home. When they reach home Mr Stink tells Mrs Crumb that she’s on the verge of losing her eldest daughter and that she must work much harder at being a good mother. Mortified Mrs Crumb begs Chloe to stay.

The family is reunited and they look forward to spending Christmas with Mr Stink as a guest in their home. He tells them that he cannot stay - that he’s a wanderer and that

he has to go. Chloe is sad to see him leave, but realises that in helping to bring the family back together he has given them the best Christmas present ever.

• As a class think back to the production and recall its key moments, make a note of these on the whiteboard.

• Distribute storyboard worksheets and the inspiring illustrations by Quentin Blake.

• Ask pupils to create a Mr Stink storyboard using the storyboard worksheet; pupils will need to create short sentences and accompanying illustrations that tell Mr Stink and Chloe’s story.

• Pupils should draw their scenes in a Quentin Blake style, an example has been included.

• Give pupils background information on Quentin Blake, see links at the back of the pack and discuss the importance of illustrations as a storytelling device.

Select one pupil to stand in the middle of the circle, they will not have a chair. The pupil will begin the game.

The pupil in the middle will say the phrase

Being Mr Stink! 15 minutes

Once your pupils are warmed up after playing Mr Stink smells anyone who? Ask them to clear the circle of chairs and lie in their own space on the floor, not touching anyone else, then ask pupils to close their eyes.

Ask pupils to think back to the production and recall the different characters they saw onstage. Ask pupils to choose one character from Mr Stink and begin to visualise the character in their minds, then ask pupils to think very hard about the following questions whilst visualising their chosen character:

Who is the character? What did the character look like? How did they walk? Are they a fast or slow moving character? How does the character speak?

Ask pupils to visualize the character walking across the stage, observing their mannerisms and how they walk, do they have any physical traits that make them stand out?

Then ask pupils to begin to imagine that they are their Mr Stink character, in a moment they will open their eyes, stand up and walk around the space as a Mr Stink character, using everything that they learned about their character when closing their eyes and lying on the floor.

Encourage pupils to slowly open their eyes and stand up as their Mr Stink character, they should then walk around the space as their characters adopting their style and walk. As the class is moving around the room as their Mr Stink characters ask them to think about:

Where the character is going?Where have they just come from? What are they thinking about?

The Duchess will spend the game being chased by Mr Stink and Mr Stink will spend the game chasing the Duchess.

For Mr Stink to catch the Duchess he must tag the Duchess on the back, if Mr Stink successfully tags the Duchess they will swap roles and the Duchess will become Mr Stink and lead the chase.

Whilst being chased the Duchess can seek safety in a dog kennel at any time, to do this they must link arms with one of the pupils creating the kennels.

The partner in the kennel who the Duchess does not link arms with will then become the Duchess and continue to run away from Mr Stink, they can attach themselves to a kennel at anytime to stop Mr Stink catching them.

Groups should make the smell part of what is happening in the scene.

Play the improvisations out to the rest of the class one by one, whilst each groups performs their scene to the class, the pupils in the audience should then scratch and sniff their little book of stinks, seeing if they can correctly guess the location of the scene using the smells and the improvisation as clues.
