WHAT I HAVE LEARNED ON MY MOOC
I have learned that MOOCs are built on efficiency of scale, giving
access to the teaching of a world class Educator to thousands of
students at once.
The teaching, assessments and activities for a course – especially
an online course – and the expertise of the Educator behind the
content is not cheap and, in many cases, is unique to a particular
university or School.
A MOOC throws open the door of the Teacher’s classroom, enabling
him or her to teach more than just a few dozen students at a time.
The following is the addition of what I have
learned about learning design from my own
MOOC experience:
QUESTION : 1
CHARACTERISTICS OF AUTHENTIC LEARNING CHARACTERISTIC TICK IF
USED
SUGGESTIONS
1.Authentic activities have real-
world relevance.
2. Authentic activities are ill-
defined, requiring students to
define the tasks and sub-tasks
needed to complete the activity
3. Authentic activities comprise
complex tasks to be investigated by
students over a sustained period of
time
Activities are completed in minutes or hours rather than in
weeks or months. I would suggest they change in this regard.
4. Authentic activities provide the
opportunity for students to examine
the task from different
perspectives, using a variety of
resources
Opportunity is not given to students to use variety of
resource's, only provided information or videos are used to
examine the task. I would suggest they refer learners to variety
of websites so that they could detect relevant info from
irrelevant for use.
CHARACTERISTIC TICK IF
USED
SUGGESTIONS
5. Authentic activities provide the
opportunity to collaborate
6. Authentic activities provide the
opportunity to reflect
Unfortunately in Alison opportunity to reflect after each an
every assessment is not given for learners to reflect. I suggest
they leave such an page evaluation form or reflection page to
discuss their experiences or their concerns.
7. Authentic activities can be
integrated and applied across
different subject areas and lead
beyond domain-specific outcomes
8. Authentic activities are
seamlessly integrated with
assessment
CHARACTERISTIC TICK IF
USED
SUGGESTIONS
9. Authentic activities create
polished products valuable in their
own right rather than as
preparation for something else
In this regard the products or certificates are not valuable in
their own right. Since you can not take the certificate to go
look for a job but instate they prepare or add on other
qualifications obtained. I would suggest they use passports or
ID number to register each learner and allow a sustained
period of time to complete assessments rather than in few
hours or days. Then the value of their product will go high.
10. Authentic activities allow
competing solutions and diversity of
outcome
EVALUATION OF MY MOOC
DIMENSION RUBRIC MOTIVATION
1.Collaboration There is a tutorial group which
enables learners to work
together in group. Check slide 25
for evidence of this regard. Click
here
DIMENSION RUBRIC MOTIVATION
2.Knowledge Building Knowledge is constructed through
the real-world activities, videos
etc.
DIMENSION RUBRIC MOTIVATION
3.Use of ICT It allows learners to use ICT
though learners do not have
control over the ICT themselves.
DIMENSION RUBRIC MOTIVATION
4. Real world problem solving I like the fact that simple basic
example are used to
accommodate learners from
different social contexts.
DIMENSION RUBRIC MOTIVATION
5. Self Regulation Feedback is provided
immediately after completion of
assessment therefore student are
able to work on that and re-do
the assessment.
QUESTION : 2
The following is the Evidence of my participation in MOOC:
MY MOOC STORY
I did MOOC firstly on, English Vocabulary and Pronunciation. Secondly on, English Literature Analysis
and finally on, Diploma in Accounting - Advanced Controls and Transactions as my topics. The reason
why I chose the first two topics is the fact that English is my first Major module which will enable me
to teach the English language at high school. My aims for the topic was to polish both my written and
spoken English through Alison since we do not focus much on that at University. I also intend to do a
bit of accounting after my first degree therefore I chose Accounting to help me with the basics. Alison
MOOC has a good record from its establishment and therefore has got a good academic reputation
that’s why I chose it.I found it easy to study flexibly and all my progression was communicated
thorough my emails, therefore learning was made possible in this regard. The fact that they sell
certificates I find it disadvantaging other learners from poor backgrounds, especially since they claim
to offer free education. IF I were to relive this MOOC, I would find sponsors and offer certification for
free. Yes I did have enough skills to cope with the MOOC demands since I am computer literate. I have
acquired ICT skills in terms of integrating technology to advance learning, this MOOC was a good
example as to how to start and using the 10 characteristics of Authentic learning. Badges can provide
motivation for learners, by providing tangible and public evidence of progress through a learning
environment. Learners may regard badge awards as of intrinsic value in themselves, rather than as
proxy display of progress. MOOC experience influenced me in a very wonderful manner. As a future
teacher I intent to make use of technology to advance my learners knowledge and I took an imitative
to use overhead projector for my lessons presentation so that I will be able to include some videos and
other exciting things.
