ADDICTION STAGES

Stage 1- experimentation Stage 2- regular use Stage 3- daily preoccupation Stage 4- dependency*

*don’t think only people who are down & out are capable of becoming addicted.

*addiction can happen in as little as 6 months.

SHORT TERM EFFECTS

Mucosal lining, tongue, gums, & throat- chemicals affect

Stomach- 20% goes. Too much= intoxicated

Small intestine- swallowed 80% to small intestine where it enters blood stream more slowly.

Heart- beats faster, blood vessels widen, & body temperature rises.

SHORT TERM EFFECTS

Brain- becomes less able to control the body (movement, speech, & vision)

Liver- changes alcohol to water. When you drink faster than the liver can break it down= intoxicated (DRUNK)

Lungs- CO2 released from here leads to increased urine, sweating, & bad breath

DEFINITIONS

Drugs= substances that change the structure/function of the body/mind.

Medicines= drugs that are used to prevent or cure diseases or other conditions.

TYPES OF MEDICINE

Vaccines- medicines to prevent diseases

Antibiotics-medicines that fight germs

Prescriptions & Over the Counter (OTC)

- medicines that provide pain relief

DRUG CLASSIFICATIONS

Stimulants- drugs that speed up the body’s functions.

Depressants- drugs that slow down the body’s functions.

Narcotics- drugs that are used to relieve pain.

Hallucinogens- drugs that make people “hallucinate,” a.k.a. mind altering drugs.

DRUG CLASSIFICATIONS

Steroids- drugs made from hormones.

Inhalants- everyday products that are sniffed or snorted to obtain a high.

Club (Designer) Drugs-These are man made drugs that are a changed form of a controlled drug. These designer drugs do not follow the laws for controlled drugs. No quality control!

DRUGS ENTERING THE BODY

Swallowing liquid, pill, or tablet:

mouth stomach bloodstream

(dissolves) (delayed)

Injection*: needle bloodstream

drugs go directly into bloodstream

Smoking Snorting

PRESCRIPTION DRUGS

Why they can be popular:easy to get, can be legal if they’re for

someone. Dangerous because:prescribed for someone else’s age,

weight, body size, medical history, etc.

Examples:pain killers, ADD or ADHD meds.

STIMULANTS

Why they can be popular:provides energy, and a feeling of well-

being. Dangerous because:can lead to heart attack or increased

blood pressure, Examples:caffeine, crack, heroin, & cocaine

Page 26: Mr. Fisher -Impaired -Tolerance -Chemical Dependency -Psychological Dependency -Withdrawal -Physiological Dependency -Drug.

METHAMPHETAMINE

Why they can be popular:cheaper than cocaine, Dangerous because:highly addictive, combines stimulants,

narcotics, & hallucinogens, causes: meth mouth, people to lie, cheat, & steal to get more.

Examples:methamphetamine (meth), crystal

meth

Page 27: Mr. Fisher -Impaired -Tolerance -Chemical Dependency -Psychological Dependency -Withdrawal -Physiological Dependency -Drug.

OPIATES

Why they can be popular:feel instant pleasure and less pain. Dangerous because:highly addictive, this combined with

alcohol is most common two-drug combo that leads to death.

Examples:cocaine, heroin, morphine, codeine

Page 28: Mr. Fisher -Impaired -Tolerance -Chemical Dependency -Psychological Dependency -Withdrawal -Physiological Dependency -Drug.

HALLUCINOGENS

Why it’s popular:come in pill form, doesn’t lead to

increased energy. Dangerous because:cause hallucinations which could lead

to harming yourself or others. Examples:LSD (acid), PCP, MDMA (ecstasy),

mushrooms

Page 29: Mr. Fisher -Impaired -Tolerance -Chemical Dependency -Psychological Dependency -Withdrawal -Physiological Dependency -Drug.

STEROIDS

Why it’s popular:not taken for a “high,” some think it’s

their only option. Dangerous because:“roid rage,” mood swings, deepening

of the voice, fat knuckles, decrease in testes’ size

Types:medical, and illegal

Page 30: Mr. Fisher -Impaired -Tolerance -Chemical Dependency -Psychological Dependency -Withdrawal -Physiological Dependency -Drug.

INHALANTS

Why they can be popular:easy to get Dangerous because:kills brain cells that will never come

back, freezes brain activity. Examples:household cleaners, spray paint, etc.

Page 31: Mr. Fisher -Impaired -Tolerance -Chemical Dependency -Psychological Dependency -Withdrawal -Physiological Dependency -Drug.

CLUB DRUGS

Why they can be popular:no alcohol included, can look like candy Dangerous because:raves= dangerous people, increases

sexual drive, can lead to sex and STIs, dehydrates the body, body temperature rises, eyes are fascinated on lights.

Types:MDMA (Ecstasy or X), Roofies
