Mr Aslam Mohammed FRCS, FRCS (Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Specialising in Lower Limb Arthroplasty and Sports Injury I qualified from the Welsh National School of Medicine in Cardiff in 1984. I presently hold a NHS Consultant Post at Wrightington Hospital for Joint Disease and at Chorley and South Ribble District General Hospital being appointed in 1995. I immediately took up the position of Clinical Director in Chorley and set up and established the department of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery in Chorley. This involved a lot of hard work as well as teamwork and communication within and outside the Trust. I was Clinical Director for almost five years, after that I decided to take a back seat from management and concentrate on my clinical work and research. I undertook my specialist training in Orthopaedic and Trauma at the North Staffordshire Hospital in Stoke on Trent and at the Robert Jones Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry one the leading specialist orthopaedic hospital in the UK. In addition to this I spent a considerable amount of time travelling and visiting centres both in Europe and the USA to discuss and exchange ideas on the latest techniques in Orthopaedic Surgery. During my training I was awarded G K Rose Prize for Biomechanics and the Professors Medal for my research into bone cell culture techniques related to fracture healing. I regularly attend national and international meetings as a delegate and as a member of the faculty. I take an active part in teaching trainees at both my hospitals. My current research interests include fixation of ligament grafts in cruciate ligament reconstruction, minimal invasive hip surgery and the application of computers to assist in specific minimally invasive surgical procedures in the hip and knee. I specialises in arthritic problems around the hip, knee and ankle joints, particularly in young adults. Also sports related soft tissue injuries and problems. Hip Surgery I am one of a few surgeons in the UK who is able to offer key hole surgery of the hip joint (Arthroscopy) for which I receive referrals nationwide and from abroad. Hip arthroscopy : Labrum tears, Loose bodies, Impingement syndromes etc Hip Arthroplasty: I use bone preserving procedures where possible when joint replacement is indicated. These include hip resurfacing and Thrust Plate Prosthesis (TPP) both of which have a metal on metal bearing surface. I also use uncemented hip replacements and conventional cemented hip replacements as appropriate for individual patients. Computer Aided Surgery (CAS): For resurfacing and acetabular component placement.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Specialising in Lower Limb Arthroplasty and Sports Injury

I qualified from the Welsh National School of Medicine in Cardiff in 1984. • Hip arthroscopy : Labrum tears, Loose bodies, Impingement syndromes etc

• Hip Arthroplasty: I use bone preserving procedures where possible when joint replacement is indicated. These include hip resurfacing and Thrust Plate Prosthesis (TPP) both of which have a metal on metal bearing surface. I also use uncemented hip replacements and conventional cemented hip replacements as appropriate for individual patients.

• Computer Aided Surgery (CAS): For resurfacing and acetabular component

placement.

Knee Surgery - Arthritis For arthritic conditions of the knee joint I use conservative measures including braces and Hyaluronic Acid injections and ultimately joint replacement as required.

• Uni compartmental knee replacement • Total knee replacement :Mobile bearing (LCS) • Patellofemoral joint replacement in isolated cases of arthritis of the

patellofemoral joint I use thereby preserving the remainder of the knee joint. • Tibial osteotomy and Computer Aided Surgery (CAS) in specific cases

With my extensive experience in joint arthroplasty, I am able to provide a service for revision and reconstructive surgery for failed joint replacement of both the hip and knee joint. Knee Surgery - Soft tissue and Sports Injury I also provide the latest techniques for the management of Sports Injury.

• Management of acute injuries; meniscal repair and resection • Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL) • Reparative techniques for damaged articular cartilage including microfracture,

chondrocyte implantation and mosaicplasty. I am involved with the 10-year prospective ACTIVE MRC trial to assess the efficacy of autologous chondrocyte implantation compared with micro fracture for articular cartilage defects. This is a multi centre study and I have been able to establish Wrightington as one of the centres. I strongly feel that teaching and training of future generations of Orthopaedic Surgeons is of vital importance. I am involved in running courses on joint replacement surgery and soft tissue reconstruction utilising Cadaveric facilities here in the UK and abroad. I lecture both nationally and internationally. Overall my philosophy is to use implants which match patient’s needs, their pathology and functional requirements; therefore I use a variety of implants for both hip and knee replacements which will serve to provide optimal function and outcome for each individual patient. I aim to provide a high quality service, using the latest proven surgical techniques and implants to give the best long term outcome. For further information and for appointments please contact my secretary at Wrightington Hospital Ms Liz Heyes on 01257 256300 Chorley DGH Mrs Liz Swain on 01257 245269 Euxton Hall Hospital Mrs Sharon Jackson 01257 276261

Articular Cartilage Lesions Articular cartilage lesions can be treated in various ways and no one method has been proven beyond all doubt. That is why I am part of a multi centre study in order to help answer this question.

Revision Knee Replacement Knee replacement are now lasting and functioning well for over 10 to 15 years. However failures do occur for a multitude of reasons and factors. These causes of failure need to be addressed and lessons learnt from the mode of failure.

Complex Cases Complex situations do arise with disabling pain and loss of function. In young patients, as in this case of a fracture of the femur. The fracture healed in a poor position and gave rise to degeneration and arthritis in the knee joint some years later requiring knee replacement.

OA after mal union of femoral shaft fracture Post osteotomy and TKR Computer Assisted Surgery Computer assisted surgery is extremely helpful in these difficult situations to improve accuracy of bone cuts, alignment of the leg and placement of the components. Reference towers attached to the patients femur and tibia to help collect data during a knee replacement.
