1 Starting up EVK-L10M is a powerful and easy-to-use tool that simplifies the evaluation of u-blox MPCI-L100 4G LTE modules in PCI Express Mini Card form factor.

This section describes the main connections and settings required to get started.

See the MPCI-L1 series Data Sheet [2] and TOBY-L1 / MPCI-L1 series System Integration Manual [3] to learn about the features supported by MPCI-L1 series LTE cellular modules.

Figure 2: EVK-L10M block diagram

The EVK-L10M consists of two boards to evaluate MPCI-L100 series 4G LTE modules:

• The lower board, called EVB-WL3, contains the power supply, header connectors for a separate u-blox GNSS module evaluation adapter board, and other peripherals for the MPCI-L100 cellular module (SIM card holder and Reset button).

• The upper board is the MPCI-L1 Adapter Board and contains a button for W_DISABLE, the Mini PCI express connector, and the USB connector for the MPCI-L100 cellular module.

The two boards are connected by means of Dual-In-Line male Board-to-Board connectors provided on the bottom of the Adapter Board and their relative female connectors provided on top of the lower board.

The USB interface of the cellular module interface is available on the cellular native USB connector on the adapter board, while the other peripherals are available on the Dual-In-Line male Board-to-Board connectors provided on the top layer of the Adapter Board (J300, J301), which are pin-to-pin compatible to the connectors on the bottom layer of the Adapter Board.

The lower board (EVB-WL3) is designed also to be used with other u-blox cellular adapter boards and GNSS adapter boards: it contains additional switches, jumpers, connectors, LEDs and parts that are not specifically described in Figure 1 or within this document, because they are intended for use only with other u-blox cellular and GNSS modules. It is recommended to leave any additional connector unconnected, and to leave any additional switch in the default configuration.

As an option, the header connectors for the GNSS adapter board can be used for evaluation of u-blox GNSS modules. The GNSS module would be evaluated separately to the MPCI-L100 cellular module, as the interface to the GNSS module is not supported by MPCI-L100 modules.

1.6 Software installation

The EVK installation software (and documentation) package can be downloaded from the Web; see the Quick Start card [5] for the URL. Save the installation zip file to any location of the hard drive on the computer. Note the location of the driver since it will be used for driver updates.

The .exe installation package in the zip file will install the following:

1. Windows drivers for TOBY-L1 or MPCI-L1 series modules. Note the location of the driver since it will be used for driver updates.

2. u-blox m-center cellular module evaluation tool

The instructions refer to a Windows 7 system; other Windows versions may be slightly different.

Installing the USB driver:

1. Before connecting to the EVK-L10M, install the downloaded installer by unzipping the file and then executing the .exe installer file. Figure 3 to Figure 5 show the various key stages of the installation process.

Figure 3. Installer starts by prompting for language

Figure 5: Installation Completed

2. Connect the EVK-L10M to the computer via USB (for more details, see section 1.8).

3. With the new hardware connected and detected, Windows will complete the installation.

Figure 6: Windows installing drivers

4. When the installation is complete, the Windows Device Manager will include a Remote NDIS network adapter and a Gadget Serial COM Port for the AT-command interface, as shown in Figure 7.

Figure 7: Drivers installed

The driver installation is a one-time-only process. The device will locate the drivers when connected the next time.

1.7 EVK setup In addition to the evaluation board itself, the kit includes the following parts, which are needed for setup:

• Two LTE cellular antennas • GNSS antenna (optional) • Power adapter • USB cable

Setup instructions:

1. Insert the SIM card into the SIM Card Holder (J300).

2. Connect one of the cellular antennas to the Cellular Primary Antenna U.FL connector on the MPCI-L100 module (ANT1, RF input/output for LTE RF signal transmission and reception).

3. Connect the other cellular antenna to the Cellular Secondary Antenna U.FL connector on the MPCI-L100 module (ANT2, RF input for LTE signal reception as per Down-Link MIMO 2 x 2). Place the secondary antenna far enough (at least 20 cm) from the primary antenna.Connect the AC / DC +12 V power adapter to the 9 – 18 V Power Input connector (J400). The LED DL401 lights blue.

4. To enable the board power supply, turn the Main power switch (SW400) to ON position. The LED DL400 lights green. The cellular module switches on.

5. For communication via USB, connect the USB cable to the Cellular Native USB connector on the ADP-MPCI board. After the end of the module boot, one COM port is enabled with Windows (the numbering of the ports can be seen via the Windows Device Manager, see Figure 5 for a screenshot reference):

o The serial port for AT commands is available over the numbered COM port opened by the driver.

o The port for an Ethernet-over-USB connection is available over the Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device opened by the driver.

6. If GNSS functionality is required, connect the GNSS antenna to the GNSS antenna SMA connector on the EVB. Place the GNSS antenna in a location with good sky view.

The interface to the GNSS module is not supported by MPCI-L100 modules. However the GNSS module can be used independently of the cellular module.
