challenge presented by Smith’s was

one MPA was happy to accept.

During the project, Smith’s engineering

staff requested a major design change

based on ergonomic access to an ele-

vated control station. Over the years,

MPA has built an enviable reputation

for professional and technical compe-

tence and we were able to accommo-

date this request whilst maintaining

our schedule by drawing on the reser-

voir of engineering and technical ex-

pertise within the company.

Ultimately what forged our success in

this project, as it has done in so many

others, is our commitment to first-class

workmanship and love of industry.

MPA designed, manufactured and

installed Switchboard through

240mm² 1000A SDI cables. It also

involved the design and installation

of cable ways (in the form of 600m

ladder) and varying sizes of cable

trays all installed at roof height level

in the factory.

Different parts of the machinery were

synchronized (interlocked), as well

as repaired or redesigned and in-

cluded the old relay logic in the

Blending System and the Cross Lap-

per System. MPA also programmed

the PLC’s and HMI on the two card-

ing machines, as part of the upgrad-

ing procedure.

With the upgrade of the machine, the

Project B&D Doors Panel Line Automation

($465,000)

B&D Doors automated their existing

panel line production process by install-

ing a new switchboard/MCC and Sie-

mens Safety rated PLC, to control the

entire panel production line machinery.

The safety system has Cat 2, 3 and 4

sections and is fully integrated into the

PLC/SCADA system using the Sie-

mens Safety PLC CPU and I/O Cards.

The controlled machinery includes a

dual arm decoiler, an embosser, a

sheet leveller, a press, a variable width/

length punch trolley, a sheet slitter, two

different roll formers and various con-

veyors.

MPA provided switchboard manufac-

ture, PLC and SCADA supply, electrical

engineering works, full field installation,

programming, and commissioning ser-

vices for this project. MPA also sup-

plied, programmed, and commissioned

the switchboards, PLC and SCADA

system. The switchboards included

Siemens 611U servo drives and Micro-

master VSD’s. The control system

comprised one S7-315F-2DP Safety

rated PLC, a fully customised Siemens

WinCC SCADA control system running

on three interlinked industrial panel PC

operator stations, a wireless Ethernet

connection to the office network, Sie-

mens Scalance wireless access points

and Profibus communication with other

plant machinery making related product

parts.

Pharmaceuticals

Project

Alphapharm has been research-

ing, developing and making ge-

neric medicines in Australia for

more than 25 years. And as part

of their ongoing commitment to

excellence, a great deal of focus

and resources are injected into

plant improvement to provide a

high quality product as well as en-

suring the safety of their staff.

MPA have been working with Al-

phapharm for over 20 years im-

proving functionality and safety to

their machine and plant as well as

providing breakdown and equip-

ment support. Some of our more

recent projects have included re-

moving staff from a hazardous

area by relocating process inter-

faces, providing consultation for

and installing Ex rated equipment

and safety systems for older ma-

chinery such as mixers, blenders,

pill presses and packaging ma-

chines. Alphapharm continue to

set the pace in their field and we

will be with them all the way.

Renewable Power/Energy

Project

Goodna RSL 22.5kW Solar System

The Goodna RSL Function Centre

building was in great need of refurbish-

ment and after conducting a cost-

benefit analysis, it was determined that

it would be more cost effective to de-

molish the existing building and rebuild.

MPA Energy partnering with Solar In-

ception was able to provide a compre-

hensive solar power solution from de-

sign and install through to commission-

ing and ongoing monitoring. MPA’s

highly skilled CEC accredited installa-

tion team as well as Solar Inception’s

top quality products ensured that

Goodna RSL was able to easily achieve

one of its sustainable energy goals –

generating green energy through the

use of solar power.

MPA Energy Solutions installed a

22.5kW solar system for Goodna RSL

using 144 monocrystalline solar panels

and a Sunny Mini inverter which will

produce approximately 504,000 kWh of

energy over the 20 year lifetime of the

system. Included in the installation was

a Sunny Matrix which enables the RSL

to monitor the daily energy that the PV

system has generated as well as the

CO2 savings that have been made.

This high-tech monitoring system can

be observed over the LAN or Internet

allowing clients access from wherever

they are located. Over the expected 20

year lifetime of the system, approxi-

mately 524 tonnes of CO2 gas emis-

sions will be saved.
