Message from the Headmaster

The Summer term really is a whirlwind of activity and this week has been no exception. It has been wonderful to receive regular updates from Dartmoor, where our Year 7 and Year 8 pupils are having a huge amount of fun, engaging in an enormous array of outdoor activities and learning a vast amount about themselves and their peers in the process. As with Years 3 and 4 last week after their Camp Out, I am sure there will be some tired boys and girls this evening and a huge pile of washing for somebody to tackle!

Elsewhere, we had a fabulous Transition morning on Tuesday and we look forward to more of the same on Monday. There will also be the opportunity for parents to ‘meet the new teacher’ after school on Monday, so if you have yet to let the office know that you can attend, then please do so as soon as possible.

Next week finishes with our annual Sports Day (cue a month’s rainfall in one day…), with the Seniors battling it out in the morning and the Juniors in the afternoon. Please feel free to bring friends and family along to enjoy a picnic and revel in some wonderful sporting entertainment. It promises to be a brilliant day.

Have a wonderful world cup weekend and I look forward to seeing you all on Monday.

Fundraising for Borneo

During the second half of this term our intrepid Year 9 pupils will be fundraising for their trip to Borneo. Every Friday after school Farah, Amber, Joe, Ben and Bobby will be holding a tuck shop selling a selection of different sweets, drinks and snacks. For Sports Day on Friday 22nd June they will be face painting for a donation. Thank you very much in advance for supporting them in their endeavours.

Junior School

Focus of the week

As the World Cup is underway, Mr. Babur talked about the importance of the referee in sport. The referee has a difficult role when officiating a game as they are always under pressure and have lots of people (sometimes from many corners of the world) judging their decisions. However, they have an important role, which the children were very quick to point out. Without a referee, there would be nobody there to set the rules! Without a referee, nobody would be there to make sure that the game was being played fairly. Most importantly, without rules, people would get hurt as it could be quite dangerous with the rules. The Junior School were fantastic in assembly and were able to point out the similarities between the teachers and the referees. There is a lot that we can learn from sport, including the idea of fair play and how to work together as a team. Therefore, our focus of the week is to "be fair at all times". Well done on a good week, Junior School!

Exciting visitors for our Early Years

This week, Early Years had exciting visitors from Zoolab: two baby guinea pigs, a snail, a

cockroach, a dragon, a tarantula and even a snake! The children were able to look at and

touch the animals, had many opportunities to ask questions and learnt lots of facts!

This week’s Role Models are:

Reception: Annabella

Year One: Max H

Year Two: Layla

Year Three: Ellis

Year Four: Molly

Year Five: Eloise

Year Six: Phoebe Well done to all our role models for working hard this week and for being fine ambassadors for our wonderful junior school.

Blunts Barn

Last week Years Three and four enjoyed a night under the stars at Blunts Barn.

With bags packed, excitement palpable, 4pm finally arrived and the Year Three and Four children departed for a night and full day's activities at Blunts Barn. Colin, experienced Scout master and leader for our time away, set the pace and marched our intrepid adventurers into the heart of the New Forest. On route to our camp site, we stopped to learn how to make bracken javelins, experience the sweet taste of the honeysuckle and learn the names of tons of different types of trees.

30 slightly weary children arrived at the campsite to find a bbq loaded with burgers and sausages ready to be eaten. After a quick allocation of tents, unpacking of bags, bread buns filled and batteries recharged the children were ready for their first activity, games in the forest. Dead man's bog claimed several shoes but a lot of running and fun was had by all. Unfortunately the midgies thought they were all quite tasty, so as the black of night closed in the children were pleased to return to camp for hot chocolate followed singing, with Colin playing the guitar around an incredible campfire.

Teeth brushed, it was time for bed, or should I say a great opportunity to munch sweets and chat with tent mates?! Mr. Towler, Mr. Hutchings and Mrs. Garvey were ready for a good sleep, but it seemed that the children had other ideas!!

Friday dawned, the children bounced out of their tents ready for the day ahead, none the worse for wear from their early hours conversations.

On the agenda that morning bacon sandwiches and three awesome activities, zip lining, boat building and archery. Miss Mann especially enjoyed the Zip Line whilst Mrs. Garvey proved herself to be a good shot with a bow and arrow. Mr. Towler also surprised everyone with mid morning croissants. After a busy morning and good lunch, the children packed up their tents and returned to the forest for camp fire making and damper filled with chocolate, toffee or (and) strawberry sauce for dessert. With everybody suitably filled, it was time to set off on our return walk to school, via a fine lake/pond/watering hole to test the children's boat building skills. All their creations floated, most sailed, some brilliantly made it to the other side.

A few kilometres later, we were back at Moyles Court School, all tired but full of fantastic memories and experiences. Very well done to those that had never slept away from home before, you impressed the teachers greatly and thank you to Mr. Towler for organising the brilliant trip to Blunts Barn.

Year Four News

After the fun, excitement, learning and experience of Blunts Barn it has been 'back to the books' for Year Four this week.

The children have continued their Rainforest Topic studies using our very own New Forest. In the photos you can see our children constructing diagrams to detail different layers.

In Science we have started our final topic for the year, Digestion. So far we have explored the important roles of different teeth before investigating how long it takes for food to move through the system.

Maths lessons are now centred around shapes. "Area, Area, Area, length X width" and "P-Rim-E-Ter, journey round the outside" have been explored and we will be moving onto 3D shapes next. Embracing the full cross curricular approach the children have been reading stories with a rain forest setting, with The Great Kapok Tree being used to magpie super vocabulary and learn a little more about deforestation.

Year Five Cake Sale

Last week Eloise from Year Five organised a cake sale to raise money for the homeless. Amelia, Jess, Toby and Lucy helped bake cakes which they sold at break time. They raised an amazing £39.25. Well done!

Year Seven Maths

Half-time Scores

With the World Cup about to start, Year 7 investigated the following problem in Maths If a game ended 1-1 there are 4 possible half-time scores:

0-0, 1-0, 0-1 and 1-1 a) How many possible half time scores are there for a game ending 4-2? b) How many possible half time scores are there for a game ending 3-3? c) Can you spot a pattern in the number of half-time scores? d) Can you use this to predict how many possible half-time scores there are for a game

ending 9-9 and a game ending 5-3? e) Can you find a rule? Kaden, Brendan and Arthur came up with excellent ways of tackling the problem and were able to give the rule for any score. Can you?

World Cup Fever!

World Cup fever has hit Moyles Court! The school sweepstake took place on Monday and each class has been allocated a number of teams competing in this year’s tournament. As well as cheering on their teams, each class will be undertaking further independent research into their selected countries and seeing who will be the champion class for discovering the most about their countries. May the best team/class win!

Under 11 Rounders v Bransgore School Wednesday 13th June 2018

The team was made up of Ruby, Victoria, Eleanor, Olivia, Portia, Serena, Darcie, Hannah, Jessica B, Jessica H-R, Eloise, Poppy, Lucy, Daisy and Phoebe.

This was the first game we’ve played against Bransgore and we had to make a few changes throughout the game as players had to leave to help out the U13 team. We made a strong start and scored 8 ½ rounders in each of the first and second innings. We showed good batting skills and the ability to read the game and score points when it was possible. In the final 3rd inning, we started to make mistakes in our fielding, giving away soft rounders to our opposition. It was such an exciting game however, and Bransgore had one girl left to bat and were only ½ a rounder behind. She hit the ball and Moyles Court just couldn’t make the right decision to stop her scoring a winning rounder! We had such a fun afternoon.

Final Score: Moyles Court - 23 ½ Bransgore - 24

Player of the Match: Batting – Eloise Fielding - Portia

Moyles Court U11 Cricket vs The Park U11

Wednesday 13 June 2018 The team was made up of Freddie S (Captain), Charlie S, Ben M, Finley AE, George H, Josh G, Jack W, Ang Pau, Danny P and Evan G Moyles Court and The Park battled out another superb game of cricket at Dean Court on a sunny Wednesday. The visitors lost the toss and were put into bat and got off to a tricky start as they lost a couple of early wickets. Ben and Jack responded superbly with some excellent running between the wickets and clean striking and put the hosts back under pressure. George came in and struck a beautiful four through square leg and Freddie added the gloss to the Moyles Court innings with a wonderful flourish in the final few overs to enable the boys from the forest to post a score of 267. The Park needed to get off to a good start, but Fin held a great catch in the first over to peg them back straight away. Evan chipped in with a wicket of his own and Sam came in and bowled off one leg to help keep Moyles Court on top. More tight bowling from Charlie and some good fielding in the deep meant The Park needed to score some big boundaries in the final few overs to win. They were denied that opportunity by some brilliant bowling by Danny, who bowled with pace and accuracy to seal the victory for Moyles Court. Well played boys! Man-of-the-Match Danny for his incredible bowling and Freddie for his excellent batting.

The Pyramids of Giza - #History Club’s Murder Mystery Meal, 8th June 2018

The scenario: Two years ago the tomb of Tutankhamun was uncovered and caused a worldwide sensation. Now an even more remarkable discovery has been made with the opening of the tomb of King Men-her-Ra by Sir John Willard and Felix Bleibner. But within days, tragedy has struck. Sir John dies suddenly of heart failure and two weeks later, Bleibner too is dead, struck down by blood poisoning. When the latter’s nephew, Rupert Bleibner, commits suicide in New York, the rumours of a curse reach the point of hysteria. Hercule Poirot summons the surviving members of the expedition to Cairo, where he will uncover the truth. Are these three deaths connected? Are there supernatural forces at work? Or is one of his dinner guests a murderer? This was the starting point of #History Club’s Murder Mystery meal and what an amazing evening it was! All the participants made a superb contribution. They looked stunning and played their parts very convincingly and effectively, despite the twists and turns of the plot as it unfolded and despite the need to think on their feet. A huge WELL DONE to all who took part. The evening would not have been nearly so enjoyable or successful without the help of Mr. Crist and Ms. Curchin, so my thanks to them as well.

Boarders’ News Last weekend the boarders took part in the annual Moyles Highland games. The clans took their places in the beautiful Summer sun and produced some amazing tribal dances. Following the opening ceremony the young athletes threw some cabers, welly ‘wanged’ and even rolled a tyre. The games finished with a highly contested tug of war with the eventual winners, Monkey Chickens, winning. After the games the boarders hit the wood participating in a range of wide games including ‘Protect the President’, who turned out to not be so well protected. Great fun was had by all! Well done Monkey Chickens and congratulations from Mrs. Milner- Smith and Mr. Legg.

Second hand uniform news

PE KIT AMNESTY - out with the old, in with the new!

From September 2018, all students will be expected to wear the new Moyles Court PE kit, introduced at the beginning of September 2017. We were given a year's grace to grow out of old tracksuits and socks, and that period is shortly to come to an end - on the last day of this term. At the time of writing, there is no second hand 'new' kit available from the second hand uniform shop at school, so all uniform items need to be sourced from the uniform shop in West Moors. Endeavouring to keep with the recycling theme, I have found a local collection point for a fabulous charity (The Christina Noble Children's Foundation, Registered Charity Number: 1007484) who are able to accept clean, usable PE tracksuits and socks which get sent out to impoverished children in Mongolia. Sadly, neither 'Bags to School' nor clothing banks can accept our old uniform items as they carry the school logo. If you would like to see your child's old PE kit go to a worthy cause, please bring your WASHED (only) items into school before Friday 29th June, and I will deliver them to my local collection point.

Thank you all for your support and efforts to recycle!
