Comprehensive Railway Solutions

Industrial Ethernet-based communication networks allow the introduction of new services, such as Passenger

Information Systems and Passenger Entertainment Systems that improve passenger comfort and enhance train

operation. A high-bandwidth Ethernet backbone facilitates high quality video surveillance and real-time emergency

intercom systems. In addition, advanced wireless roaming technology can be used to establish non-stop, two-way

communication between the ground and trains. In light of safety considerations, the communication infrastructure

must meet or exceed the high standards of vibration resistance, network redundancy, industrial ruggedness, and

electromagnetic compatibility.

Intelligent Transportation Systems

ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) play a major role in modern transportation construction, with ITS technology

applied to roadway traffic control systems. In general, ITS involves integrating communication, control, and electronics

technologies, and is used to monitor and manage traffic flow, reduce congestion, provide alternative routes to travellers,

and enhance productivity to save lives, time, and money. Roadway systems are made up of many subsystems, including

Traffic Signal Control Systems, Traffic Information Display Systems, Real-time Traffic Video Monitors and Analysis

Systems, and Power Substation Systems. ATMS (Advanced Traffic Management Systems) and ATIS (Advanced Traffic

Information Systems) are two of the most important aspects of ITS.

Power and Renewable Energies

A reliable and intelligent network is a key success factor for modern power generation systems and substations that

transmit and distribute electric power over large areas. Since substations are often located in areas subjected to high

electromagnetic interference and extreme temperature conditions, the substation infrastructure must be capable of

providing EMC protection, network redundancy, high reliability, and flexible deployment options for future upgrades.

In addition to reliability, coordination between the many standards and proprietary protocols used in substations is also

a major requirement in developing power automation systems. Since Ethernet technology is used to provide better

extensibility and interoperability, adherence to IEC 61850 communication standards is required to achieve compatibility

between different intelligent electronic devices (IEDs).

Advertising, Voice and Passenger

Information System in Helsinki’s

Metro Trains

Helsinki’s undergound operator, Helsinki City

Transport (HKL), contracted the advertising

space in their train cars to Clear Channel in

order to provide real-time advertising and en-

tertainment for metro passengers. Naturally,

the technology of choice for the content deliv-

ery was IP. IP technology became the basis for

the design and deployment of all the services

in HKL’s underground trains. HKL decided to

show advertisement spots on screens in the

subways. The ads are fed over the network to

the subways in real time. This required the de-

ployment of a new communication network to

the subway system. The network infrastructure

is used for maintenance scheduling, access to

the train diagnosis system and real-time ac-

cess to general train information. Before, these

functions needed to be carried out onboard the

train. Now, they can done remotely. The same

network can be used to offer passengers a free

WLAN connection while travelling.

System Requirements

• Seamless wireless connection from the track to the subway car, with wireless Access

Points inside the car

• Rugged industrial products with IP54 or higher and rail certification

• Rail approved EN-50155 Ethernet switches that offer VLAN capability and redundancy

inside the train

• Products that are easy to integrate with legacy devices

• High number of ports to connect all equipment in each car to a single Ethernet switch

Moxa Solution

Delivering IP based content to moving vehicles such as underground trains posed several

challenges to the HKL engineers. After surveying the available options, HKL made two key

decisions: the train-to-ground communications link would use 802.11 wireless technology,

and the onboard communications infrastructure would be based on industrial Ethernet.

HKL was looking for both a highly reliable wireless connection and an industrial Ethernet

network on-board the trains. The different devices needed to comply with EN-50155:2007

certifications for rolling stock and offer a high degree of protection against environmental

influences, at least IP54 or higher.

The communication from the trackside to inside the underground car is realized by an existing

redundant WLAN system. The system is always connected to two access points. As soon as

one access point is dropped, the system immediately connects to the next one. This way,

there is no roaming time at all.

The communication inside the train is realized with Moxa´s TN-5516 EN50155 16-port

managed Ethernet switches. Two switches, with two independent power inputs on two voltage

levels (24 VDC, 72 VDC) are mounted in every two-car subway. The switches are connected

through Moxa´s redundant Turbo Ring protocol with less than 20 ms recovery time. All other

communication devices are connected to the switches and separated into different VLANs.

The network provides the customers with both an information system and a free WLAN

connection while travelling with the subway.

On-Board Train IP Network

for French Railway

The customer was a global technology leader

in the security, defense, and transportation

fields. They deliver ground transportation so-

lutions to customers around the world, in-

cluding a large French public enterprise that

operates and maintains a large rail network

that covers around 32,000 km and runs

14,000 trains daily. The rail service provider´s

objective was the refurbishment of two region-

al train lines in the suburbs of Paris, and they

were looking for a reliable on-board train IP

network. The solution provider turned to Moxa

to deliver train certified industrial Ethernet

switches to build the network backbones.

System Requirements

• Industrial-grade devices that are designed for applications in harsh environments

• EN-50155 certified products that guarantee uninterrupted operation in the train

environment with vibration and shock

• Certification for environments with smoke and fire

• Reliable leading-edge industrial Ethernet technology

• A global partner that delivers responsive support

Moxa Solution

Starting in 2010, two French regional railway lines will be refurbished with on-board IP

networks. IP networks are able to process different large amounts of data, such as voice

or IP video, and they can also integrate wireless solutions. They are widely used to offer

comprehensive passenger information services.

One train consists of a locomotive and five passenger cars. Inside the locomotive, three of

Moxa´s TN-5508 EN50155 8-port managed Ethernet switches are installed. Inside every

passenger car, two switches are installed. Together, the switches form a Moxa Turbo Ring.

Moxa’s new generation Turbo Ring, which has the world’s fastest fault recovery speed of

under 20 ms at a full load of 250 switches, helps to minimize downtime caused by network

failures. If any path in the network is broken, the system will return to normal communication

in under 20 ms, even at the full, 250-switch load for one ring. Various topologies can be

configured using Moxa Turbo Ring to reduce cabling and network planning costs. Options

include ring coupling without a coupling control line, dual rings in one switch, and dual-homing.

Moxa´s TN-5508 switches provide a high bandwidth network at 100 Mbps/s, allowing the

integration of multiple data applications in the same backbone. This network is ideal for Passen-

ger Information Systems and IP video surveillance, and can also accommodate passenger com-

fort and redundant safety systems. Moxa will deliver the switches for the refurbishment project

throughout the next three years. Company: A global technology leader in

Industrial Ethernet Backbone

for a Railway Network in Norway

A global transportation solution provider, fo-

cusing on light express railway, streetcar, and

rack railway vehicle services offers their cus-

tomers complete vehicle concepts. Their cus-

tomised solutions have been used by one of

Norway’s most important transport compa-

nies, whose major focus is in rail freight as

well as passenger transport by train and bus.

The company needed to establish reliable, re-

dundant train backbones to connect all associ-

ated devices inside the cars. The network also

needed to be able to integrate legacy devices

and be part of a solution that is easy to in-

stall, easy to control, and easy to maintain.

System Requirements

• A quick-booting network, with short start-up time; the train network must be ready before

the embedded computers in the train are turned on

• Reliable, feature-rich and train application certified switches for flexible solutions

• A sufficient number of ports to connect all devices to the network

• Comprehensive service and support, and products with high value for money

Moxa Solution

The manufacturer of railway vehicles was looking for reliable industrial Ethernet switches

to establish the network infrastructure on-board fifty of their trains and connect all

the associated devices to this network, such as IP cameras, IP phones, video recorders,

passenger information system units, passenger counting devices, and WiFi devices.

Their major requirement was to be able to configure the switches in one ring per consist.

This topology could easily be created with Moxa´s Turbo Ring technology. A consist is

composed of a locomotive and five cars. In each car, four TN-5516 EN50155 16-port

managed Ethernet switches are installed. The PoE versions of the TN switches connect to IP

cameras for video surveillance and IP phones for a security line. The regular switches

connect to an embedded computer functioning as video data recorder that stores the video

data from the cameras, and to a passenger information system with displays to inform the

passengers while travelling. Moreover, there is the connection to a passenger counting system

that delivers data on how many people actually travel with the train. The network also

connects to several access points/clients that secure a wireless connection to external antenna

towers in order to provide passengers with WiFi access. The WiFi system also connects to a

central control station for monitoring, control, and maintenance.

With this redundant, reliable ring backbone, the railway company is able to offer their passengers

a state-of-the-art information and entertainment services, plus security functions such as

video surveillance.

On-board Ethernet for a University’s

Driverless Metro

Spread over 8 million square meters, Princess

Noura bint Abdulrahman University of Riyadh

enrolls around 40.000 students, making it the

world´s largest university for women. The fa-

cilities at Princess Noura University include ad-

ministration buildings, conference centers,

buildings for 15 academic departments, labora-

tories, and a 700-bed hospital. In order to

serve a campus of this size and meet King of

Saudi Arabia’s standards, the Saudi finance

minister declared that “the university would

have a high-tech transport system with auto-

matic and computer-controlled vehicles link-

ing all important facilities at the campus

around the clock.”

System Requirements

• Commercially available COTS Ethernet switches with high MTBF

• Railway certified industrial Ethernet switches

• Anti vibration connectors for data and power

• Fast redundant Ethernet communication along the train car

• Dual power inputs

• Small form factor

Moxa Solution

The contract for the automated driverless light rail system for Riyadh University was awarded

in June 2009, with expected completion by 2012. A European industrial company with vast

know-how in the transportation field turned to Moxa´s railway certified industrial Ethernet

switches for this innovative project.

The light rail trains on the university grounds use an on-board Ethernet network to supply

data services to the passengers. Devices used in trains of this type need to be robust and

withstand harsh conditions. In a train car, M12 and other circular connectors ensure tight,

robust connections, and guarantee reliable operation against environmental disturbances,

such as vibration and shock. Moreover, a wide power input range of 12/24/36/48/72/96/

110 VDC will allow the use of a single source in global applications. In addition, Riyadh is a

city with extreme temperature conditions, so the devices need an extended operating

temperature range.

The on-board Ethernet network – one Moxa TN-5508-LV-LV switch per carriage, two per

train – delivers high bandwidth at 100 Mbps/s – well over the 1.5 Mbp/s available using

MVB – that allows the integration of multiple data applications in the same backbone. This

network is ideal for Passenger Information Systems and IP video surveillance, and can also

accommodate passenger comfort and redundant safety systems. The automated driverless

metro will operate 24/7 using TETRA based communication between the train-cars and the

signaling system for train control and signaling communications.

Passenger Information System

in Danish Buses and Trains

Modern communications technology allows

us to be kept up-to-date anytime. Travel time

in public transportation vehicles can be used

to gain information from public infotainment

displays or wireless internet access. Commute

Media, known as “Gratis Danmark“ in Den-

mark, has developed a series of passenger in-

formation system solutions for buses and

trains, including complimentary internet ac-

cess. They support public transportation institu-

tions and their system integrators to specify,

roll out, and operate these solutions. Companies

are now able to interact with consumers dur-

ing their “free” time, when they are open to

advertising.

System Requirements

• Location-based services and personalised content for specific passengers

• Bandwidth needs to ensure HD quality and live-video

• Broad bandwidth WAN with several WLAN Access Points to enable WLAN-Access and

FlashOFDM for cellular internet access over HSDPA or WCDMA through mobile phones

• Product certifications, such as EN50155 conformity, and rugged design suitable for the

use in buses and trains

Moxa Solution

Gratis Danmark´s passenger information system uses a customized version of Moxa´s

V2402 embedded transportation computer in all buses and trains in and around Copenhagen,

as well as in regional trains throughout the whole country. They are used to show HD-quality

advertising spots on displays in trains and buses. The broadband cellular WAN connection also

enables live streaming video broadcast.

The mobile internet solution is based on wireless gateway platforms that combine a broadband

cellular WLAN connection with one or more access points/clients inside the vehicle. The

internet access itself is realized over cellular mobile telephony, usually HSDPA or WCDMA.

An additional technology called FlashOFDM is used in Denmark. It offers broadband web

access with low latency, which gives users the impression of a conveniently fast connection.

Moreover, the Commute Media solution is able to display individualized consumer-related

advertisements on a mobile computer or phone.

Moxa´s modular wireless gateway platforms V2420 and V2426 enable so-called location-based

services with a combined wireless module for WLAN, mobile telephony and GPS reception. In

the case of Commute Media this means that the advertisements shown in buses, trains and

on displays at train stations and bus stops can be attuned to specific places and times. For

example, passengers can be informed right before an upcoming stop that they need to get

off there if they want to visit a newly opened shopping center.

Speed Limit Displays Control

the Traffic in School Area

Belgium is a country with an advanced public

transportation system with a network of roads

that covers almost 120,000 kilometres. The au-

thorities care about intelligent traffic manage-

ment systems, especially in urban centers. One

of the main components of such a system is

speed control – not only on highways, but

also in urban areas that need special attention,

such as near schools. School areas see espe-

cially high foot and vehicle traffic at specific

times. During these times, traffic needs to slow

down so children can safely make their way to

and from school. Moxa’s embedded computers

can be used to manage the systems behind the

displays and sensors that control the speed

limits on the streets around schools at specific

times.

System Requirements

• Speed signs need to be programmed to limit the traffic speed at specific times

• The computer should be powered by solar energy

• Programming of the computer should be as flexible as possible (automatic, remote, and

manual)

Moxa Solution

Moxa´s V468 x86-based communication embedded computer is used to control the speed

limits at 35 Belgian schools. The computer is exclusively powered by renewable energy,

through a solar panel with a battery. This is possible due to its low power consumption of

26 W. The computer is connected to a speed limit display, a GPS time controller, and a

GPRS modem over a serial line, as well as to push buttons through digital I/O signals.

The time controller acquires current time information via GPS to ensure consistently correct

time information, which is the core of the application. The push buttons are used to manually

set speed limits and the respective characters and digits are then displayed on the speed

limit sign, primarily during maintenance. By aggregating the data from both the time

controller and the modem, the embedded computer manages the information displayed

on the speed limit signs.

Due to the embedded computer´s versatile digital interface capabilities, the speed can be

programmed automatically, remote, or even manually.

Railway Tunnel Monitoring

In the interest of maintaining secure tunnel

systems, much emphasis is nowadays being

placed on building robust tunnel monitoring

and control systems. Communication and in-

formation are crucial points. Radio systems al-

low the transmission of voice and data into the

tunnels, so that passengers and rescue ser-

vices can be reached by emergency tele-

phones or via the control centers. Signals from

analog and digital radio and television services

are edited at a receiving station and then broad-

cast in the tunnel. A well-known company who

designs, develops, produces and installs radio

systems was looking for a solution to monitor

railway tunnels in Switzerland and China. They

chose Moxa´s Embedded Computers UC-7112-

LX Plus as SNMP adaptor to monitor a complex

system of devices inside the tunnels.

System Requirements

• A reliable SNMP adaptor with two Ethernet ports for redundancy and two serial ports

to connect peripheral devices

• The product needed to have a small form factor in order to accommodate the limited

cabinet space inside the tunnel

• Engineers were looking for a standard Linux platform that facilitates development and

programming, and eases the integration of the product into the existing system

• Low power consumption

Moxa Solution

Inside the tunnels, a complex system of repeaters and antennas establish communica-

tions links with electromagnetic waves.

The communication system in the tunnel is composed of a head station and various tunnel

stations. Several tunnel stations connect to the head station (which is connected to base

stations for the different radio services) over fiber or radio. The tunnel radio system has the

structure of a distributed antenna system (with radiating cables and antennas). If the

connection to the base stations is realized via radio, the system is a so-called repeater

system (operating with GSM repeaters). Radiating cables and optic fiber link the equipment

together to a complete system.

Moxa´s UC-7112-LX Plus is used as SNMP adapter to monitor all network-attached devices.

In this application, the embedded computer is connected to the tunnel network through its

two Ethernet ports, and it is connected to the tunnel monitoring and the tunnel repeater

systems via serial ports. The computers are mounted in electrical cabinets that are positioned

inside the tunnel in regular intervals. The remote management is realized via SNMP and

the local systems are accessed through the serial interfaces. The equipment used in

tunnels is designed for the specific environmental conditions and the requirements for secure

operation. The whole tunnel radio system is monitored and remotely operated from control

centers, so that disturbances and failures can be detected early.

Advanced Traffic Management

Systems in Croatia

Constant increases in the number of vehicles

and traffic density are making variable mes-

sage signs ever-more-important to traffic sys-

tems. A top priority of modern highway man-

agement is to provide real-time, almost

instantaneous communications between high-

way operators and highway users in case of in-

clement weather conditions, accidents, traffic

jams, congestions, or other traffic events.

Telegra offers Intelligent Traffic Control solu-

tions for tunnels and highways. They have

been engaged in the design, development,

manufacture, installation and maintenance of

traffic and telecommunications systems for

more than 20 years. One of the major achieve-

ments in Croatia´s traffic management devel-

opment was the implementation of an advanced

traffic management system on the highway

that encircles the capital, Zagreb, with a ring

that is 50km wide. It was deployed in 2005 and

was the model for several other similar sys-

tems, such as one that was deployed in 2008

on the highway between Rijeka and Zagreb.

System Requirements

• A whole new traffic management system based on a redundant network structure

(ring topology) for a number of highways

• Reliable, stable operations to maximize passenger safety on the road

• Continuous operation under extreme outdoors temperatures

• Communications over fiber to cover long distances

• Easy monitoring and control of all devices and systems from central control centers

Moxa Solution

Along the 50 km of highways surrounding Zagreb, Telegra installed 72 variable message signs

that provide drivers with comprehensive information about speed limits, traffic jams, weather,

and other warnings related to the road conditions. Weather information is provided by four

meteorological weather stations which survey the environmental conditions in different loca-

tions along the highway.

Both the signs and the weather stations are connected to a control center that operates 24 hours

a day. In the control center, the complete highway grid is monitored on huge screens. When the

weather stations send their reporting data to the control center, the state-of-the-art traffic man-

agement and control software will update the message signs with the appropriate information.

The 72 variable message signs connect to 40 different roadside outstations, which operate in a

communication network with Moxa´s EDS-505A-SS-SC EtherDevice™ switch (single mode,

optical fiber). The control center is connected as communication node in the network, in a

redundant ring structure, covered by Moxa´s EtherDevice™ EDS-505A switch.

The variable message signs and the weather stations are deployed in a star topology and connect-

ed to the redundant Turbo Ring structure through the switch. On the highway around Zagreb,

the variable message signs and the weather stations are connected to the ring with ten pairs

of Moxa´s IMC-21 series of media converters (multi mode fiber), to extend the distance be-

tween the ring switch, the weather stations, and the variable message signs. They convert the

signals from the variable message signs and the weather stations to the switch in multi mode.

City and Road Video Surveillance System

for Southern Italian Communities

The Italian government and a number of local

municipalities in the south of Italy, including

Lecce, Mural, San Pietro and many others,

decided to increase the safety and security of

their facilities with Italy´s largest deployment

of IP video surveillance solutions ever. The vid-

eo surveillance systems are supposed to oper-

ate 24/7, offering increased security that in-

cludes the surrounding roads of local public

spaces, such as historic centers, train stations,

and tourist attractions.

Such a large video surveillance deployment

requires expertise in network infrastructure

and communication. Among the multiple tele-

communications technologies used to cover

such a wide area and to provide a reliable net-

work, one of Italy´s leading system integrators

used existing SDH networks, newly deployed

Gigabit Ethernet networks and wireless tech-

nology to implement its solutions.

System Requirements

• Industrial-grade Gigabit network along the Italian motorways to build the access network

for the video surveillance system

• Built-in PoE technology to power IP cameras and save cabling and deployment costs

• Flexible fiber interface options to reach different IP camera locations with the most cost

effective fiber selection

• Ethernet switch with IGMP snooping that supports multicast filtering to reduce the

network traffic

• Centralized supervision, management and recording of real time video

Moxa Solution

The deployment includes multiple Gigabit Ethernet networks that carry video traffic from IP

cameras that range in number between 15 for the smallest networks to over 150 in the

largest networks. The IP cameras offer a 360-degree view of the city locations. The large

number of cameras drove the choice for Gigabit Ethernet technology as the most suitable

access network. The network, uses Moxa’s Turbo Ring and Turbo Chain technologies which

provide network recovery against failures within 20 ms, ensuring that any failure or damage

in the network will not interrupt the video surveillance system operation.

Industrial Ethernet switches are installed in cabinets next to the motorways. These field

switches are rated to operate from -40 to 75°C, since there is no air conditioning or

heating in the cabinets. Moxa delivered its EDS-P510A-T industrial Ethernet switches to

build the Gigabit access networks for this project. The business drivers behind this

selection boil down to offering a lower total cost of ownership to the Italian government and

the municipalities.

In the technical evaluation, EDS-P510-T offered superior PoE management options for remote

power management, which saves maintenance costs for failed IP cameras unless on site

camera repair is absolutely required. Given a software failure, it is much more efficient to

remotely reset connected devices than to send an operator to do an on-site verification. In

addition, EDS-P510-T´s reporting functions can signal deviations from standard operation,

such as excessive power consumption, link failures etc. directly to control center and trigger

alarms and notifications in real time.

Integrated Traffic Control System

for the City of Lodz, Poland

On May 1st, 2004 Poland became a member of

the European Union, a union of states currently

comprising roughly 500 million inhabitants. In

the course of their accession, they had to com-

ply with several European laws and policies,

such as new infrastructure requirements. Be-

fore that time, many of Poland’s roads and

highways were in poor condition and did not

offer travelers any traffic control systems. In

order to assimilate with their fellow states in

the EU, Poland needed to work on a lot of new

infrastructure projects and implement new

technologies. One of these projects was a new

integrated traffic control system for Lodz, the

third largest city in Poland.

System Requirements

• A reliable network that includes an integrated traffic control system which also takes into

account legacy devices

• Rugged industrial devices that can be installed outdoors, under harsh environmental

conditions

• Fiber optic capability in order to cover long distances of roads and highways

• Devices with high bandwidth and throughput to cover for video data collection and

transmission, and data analysis at a control room

Moxa Solution

This solution covers a wide area of roads and highways in and around the city that needed to

be equipped with basic components for traffic control systems, such as video surveillance

cameras, colour and text displays, overhead detectors, road weather stations and road outsta-

tions. Moxa´s task concentrates on the video cameras. The data from the cameras (frames) is

collected by a number of industrial fast Ethernet switches (60 Moxa EDS-508A switches)

that form several Moxa Turbo Rings, a very reliable redundant ring topology with a recovery

time of less than 20 ms at a load of 250 switches. The switches in the Turbo Rings send the

video data over the redundant fiber network to a Gigabit Ethernet Ring that is connected to the

main server room. This main ring is built by eight of Moxa´s EDS-510A switches that form a

Moxa Gigabit Turbo Ring topology. The Gigabit Turbo Ring ensures a fast recovery time. In

case of a failure, this is very important to ensure traveller security on the roads at all

times. Moreover, as the communication is based on RSTP, the ring can easily connect to

the legacy Ethernet switches in the server room. With an open standard Ethernet and Giga-

bit port design, the EDS-510A can fulfill the video and data transmission for intelligent trans-

portation systems, and the extended operating temperature range (-40 to 75°C) is espe-

cially well-suited for applications in harsh industrial environments with changing

temperatures.Company: A renowned system integrator

Power and Renewable Energy

28

Substation Automation for a Large

German Power Company

Since power and other utilities deliver services

that are absolutely essential to modern society,

it is critical that systems have rock-solid reli-

ability and are easily maintained. One of the

large communal organisations in the German

power market focusing on service and supply

provides energy to companies and end users

round-the-clock, serving around 530,000 cus-

tomers. They were looking for a reliable network

backbone to connect several big and small

substations as well as the control center. The

network should help to prevent failures by

intelligent monitoring and control, and, in the

event of failures, provide workarounds and/or

immediate recovery opportunities. The company

was looking for a cost-effective and easy to

install and maintain solution.

System Requirements

• IEC 61850-3 certified products that operate reliably under the harsh conditions

in substations

• A future-proof solution that can be upgraded to improve resilience through redundancy

to be able to provide power to the end user without interruptions or outages

• Connection to the control center for easy failure detection, control, and maintenance

Moxa Solution

In this application, Moxa deployed 48 of its IEC 61860-3 PowerTrans Switches. Every switch

connects different large and small substations with the control center in a star topology.

This provides a reliable solution because during a blackout in which several substations

cease power, the direct connection to individual substations would enable a quick switch to

a fully functioning substation as a short-term replacement power supplier.

The advantage of the star topology configuration is that it can be upgraded to Moxa Turbo Chain

at any point in the future, enhancing the system’s resilience with redundancy. Moreover, Moa

was able to provide the customer with just one product for the three different configurations

required:

1) A number of 24-Port modular managed Ethernet switches

2) A number of 48-Port modular managed Ethernet switches

3) Three central switches for the control room

PT-7728 IEC 61850-3 modular managed Ethernet switches cover all the requirements with the

same product. This consistency facilitates maintenance and reduces costs for stocking

additional equipment. In addition, the PT switch offers easy and straightforward firmware

that facilitates programming and installation. To increase the reliability of the system even

further, the customer concluded a 24/7 service contract with Moxa´s partner. This ensures

that the products are maintained by experts and deliver 100% operational reliability at all

times.

Communication Network for

for Ethiopian Wind Park

The Ethiopian Wind Farm Project, which is

currently in its initial stages of construction

at a site located 700 km north of Addis Abeba,

Ethiopia´s capital, was conceived to have an

installation capacity of 120 Mw, along with an

annual energy production of 400 to 450 GwH.

The project will be finalized in 36 months from

the date of commencement in mid 2009. A French

Moxa partner delivered the industrial Ethernet

switches for the communication network of

the wind farm.

System Requirements

• The entire network had to allow complete redundancy (through optical rings)

• A single point of failure in an optical fiber section (switch or a single optical fiber failure)

must not cause the loss of more than one machine

• Fast redundancy recovery and network monitoring (SNMP)

• Time synchronization over Ethernet (NTP)

• SCADA software remote use from any point of the network

Moxa Solution

The typical distance between wind farm equipment is between 1 and 10 km. Therefore, single

mode optical fiber connections with 100 MBps capacity are necessary to cover both the

distance and bandwidth requirements.

120 wind turbines need to be connected through a reliable, redundant fiber communication

network. Six redundant rings with twenty wind turbine generators in a ring are connected to a

central backbone for monitoring and control. This means that all wind turbines are connected

to a local area network, with each windmill’s control box using Ethernet to link to the base of the

tower, where a fiber-based, redundant ring LAN connection is available. The LAN is connected

to the backbone running the SCADA and control systems, which help analyze the collected

data, adjust the windmill settings, and provide intelligent alarm capability to operations and

maintenance personnel.

This adds up to some 500 IP addresses in the network. To ensure secure operations,

redundancy through Moxa´s Turbo Ring v2 protocol and ring coupling in between backbone

and field rings have been set up. Moxa´s EDS-508A-SS-SC-T 8-port managed Ethernet

switches with extended operating temperature range are a match for the local environmental

conditions, and are installed in all buildings and electrical cabinets across the wind farm (at

wind turbines, meteorological masts and high voltage stations). With Turbo Ring v2 (recovery

time < 20 ms), the EDS-508A switches increase the reliability and availability of the wind farm

application.

IEC 61850 Substation Modernization

The multinational Portuguese group Efacec is

the largest provider of energy, engineering, and

transportation solutions in Portugal. Efacec

employs around 4000 people and annual rev-

enue of almost 500 million euros. It exports

over half of its production to the over 50 coun-

tries in which it operates. Efacec’s customer

Sonelgaz is an Algerian utility company that

generates, transmits, and distributes electric-

ity. Sonelgaz sought automation systems for

four new substations: two transmission and

two distribution substations. At each substa-

tion, the communications between the central

units, the bay control units, and the digital pro-

tection relays are carried out according to the

IEC 61850 standard. Efacec found that Moxa’s

PowerTrans PT-7728 series switches, which

are specifically designed to operate reliably in

electric utility substations, were ideal for the

task.

System Requirements

• IEC 61850-3 certified products that operate reliably under the harsh conditions

in substations

• A redundant ring topology that prevents failure and ensures fast recovery times to

be able to provide power to the end users without interruptions or outages

• A redundant uplink ring backbone

• Connection to the SCADA monitoring and control system as well as central monitoring

units for easy maintenance and control

Moxa Solution

Efacec deployed the PT-7728 Ethernet switches in the transmission substation automation

system to connect with protection relays and other intelligent electronic devices (IED) to form a

ring topology that is highly self-healing in the event of a network failure. Additionally, several

PT-7728 Ethernet switches connect to the local SCADA monitoring server and redundant

substation central units, so system operators can efficiently monitor operations at field sites.

PT-7728 switches come with four Gigabit ports to power high bandwidth networks and provide

the capacity necessary for a redundant ring uplink backbone, with a spare port available for

uplink to the core switches. The modular rackmount design with rear cabling simplifies

installation and maintenance.

The PT-7728-R-HV-HV switches come equipped with PM-7200-4GTXSFP Gigabit modules to

provide a high bandwidth solution that provides the power needed for a redundant Gigabit

ring backbone, and leaves a spare Gigabit port for uplink to the core switches.

Efacec’s key selection criteria included reliable non-stop operations, strong EMI immunity,

media fast redundancy, power redundancy, and a wide operating temperature range.

Moxa’s PowerTrans products feature TurboRing™ redundancy technology with 20 ms

recovery time for up to 250-switch systems, isolated redundant power inputs, and a wide

operating temperature range from -40 to 85°C. In addition, the entire product line is IEC

61850-3 and IEEE1613 certified by KEMA, a respected independent laboratory for

consulting, one-stop testing, and certification services in energy and utility markets.
